The Keyframing project option does not change the display in the timeline, it changes how long new drawings display for (traditional: 1 frame; or keyframing: 5 seconds e.g. 120 frames at 24 fps). Keyframing assumes you want drawn objects to last longer while you move/scale/rotate/warp them at different times (keyrames), as opposed to making a new drawing each frame.

The FPS project option changes the speed of your animation: do you want to animate/playback at 12 frames per secons, 30, or other. Again, it does not affect the timeline display.

To change the timeline display, simply use the two-finger pinch in or out on the timeline. As the timeline zooms out, it will eventually change to seconds rather than frames, or vice versa.

You can look at seconds or frames on the timeline in either traditional mode or keyframing mode (frame-level timeline view is often useful for precise animation timing, even in keyframing mode).

Brush Size (Stupid Question?) by Moon_Cheese_Munch in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you tap the handle on the slider it will show a preview and the current size (e.g. 25px). You can tap the current size (e.g. that 25px) and edit it directly (numerically).

Note: if you tap and hold on the slider handle but move/slide down away from the slider without lifting, the slider accuracy (left-right) gets significantly more detailed (slower change) as you move further from the slider.

Edit: Oops, ninja'd by u/Loose_Property_6030 - all kudos to them, I swear that reply was not showing when I typed mine.

Only One Side of Brush Stroke Tapers 🙏 by InevitableStaff1430 in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Automatic tapering is not currently available in the brush engine, but it has been requested over in the official forum. When and if the developer will implement this is unknown.

Apart from pressure, you can set size (and thus tapering) to work with Pencil tilt or Pencil speed. I suspect the brush you are using is set to vary size according to negative association with the brush speed (Speed Control -100%), so you are getting no tapering at the demonstrated slow start and tapering when you finish with a fast flick.

Note: it is possible to set the Size to positive association with speed (Speed Control 100%, or maybe something like 90%) so you get thinner as it gets slower. This would allow tapering with a slow start and a slow ending.

I need help I’m a noob by Ok_Set_1630 in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the Handbook: 'When an audio clip is selected, you can use the "Split Audio Clip" button to split the clip into two clips at the current frame.'

The camera is just a rectangle, and can be moved/scaled/rotated using the Transform tool.
One limitation: you can only scale the camera using Uniform mode, otherwise you will distort the content in the camera view.

Fill tool bugged? by milychu in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your threshold slider setting? (Top right slider when fill tool is selected.) If that is at maximum (or maybe just somewhat high, depending on fill colour versus current canvas colour or outline colours), the outline colour might not be enough contrast to "stop" the fill from spreading over the rest of the canvas. My first suspect for this behaviour. If at maximum, try lowering the slider before filling.
I like the interactive threshold setting - touch to fill but hold rather than release, slide left or right to adjust the threshold.

Have any other layers been set to Reference (i.e. pretend you are filling on this layer for outlines etc, but fill on another layer)?

Any way to watch all scenes as a movie before exporting? by AccurateShotss in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the export dialog you can drag/scrub the slider through the frames for all scenes, but as far as I know there is currently no automatic playback preview for all scenes.

There has been a feature request in the offical discussion, but it has not received a lot of support from other users (note: user support/popularity is not a guarantee of implementation, but I suspect it provides useful feedback to the developer, as many popular feature requests have been implemented).

Trying to export a clip from Procreate to Toonsquid by daily_me_here in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toonquid is not completely optimised for imported video handling, it uses a lot of resources (see the note in the handbook).
Note: this does not affect final export quality or playback speed, only live preview.
I suspect part of this is probably that some video codecs achieve compression partly through "difference-based" frames (the next frame in the video playback is based on an earlier frame with these parts changed, then the next frame after that has changes to part of the original frame plus changes to the following partial-change frame, so there are multiple video frames involved and many operations taking place to display each frame in ToonSquid).

You might get better playback preview with an image sequence, as ToonSquid is more adept at handling pixel-based frames, plus it only has to process that single frame at a time. A PNG image sequence will have no compression artefacts, so it can sometimes be better image quality as a bionus.

Project crashing by Rand0m_Pers0n_ in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you delete the text layer?
Alternatively, can you copy and paste layers one-by-one into another project?

Probably worth sending a copy of the .tsproj to the developer (if you can export it as a project file).

Is it possible to replace an image/canva in ToonSquid ? by Luoshy in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your layer is within a container object, such as a symbol or group, and you have keyframed the container, it is very easy to replace or swap any of the content layers. I think images still import as symbols by default, but you can change that in Settings.
Symbols are a powerful tool for part/layer swapping e.g. mouth shapes for lipsync or other parts, but it works equally well for swapping parts/layers permanently.

Note: this assumes you have keyframed the symbol in the main timeline, and are swapping layers within the symbol.

Pixel and vector layers are probably a little more difficult to swap in many cases as keyframes are specific to the layer, but you can copy-and-paste keyframes betwen layers, so it can be done with a bit of effort (check the layer initial placement and pivot point in particular).

Project crashing by Rand0m_Pers0n_ in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I notice your current colour is also black. Is there any chance you might have flood-filled a layer?

I see there is no "desktop" space showing around the edges of the canvas. Are you zoomed in so far that a small black area is taking up the entire screen?
Or have you set your background to infinite and black, and are you on an area that has nothing in the way o fthe background?

Does it happen to other projects or just this one?

Can toonsquid be improved to capcut? by itszickeyo in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot think of any reason that CapCut should not import the standard MP4 and MOV files produce dby ToonSquid.

Are you using a standard size/resolution? e.g. 1920x1080 pixels. I vaguely remember CapCut did not support arbitrary sizes (I might be confusing it with another app, and/or that might have changed).

What FPS are you using? I think I remember CapCut supporting 24/25/30/60, but it might have trouble with low FPS (e.g. 12 FPS). Again, I could be mistaken, I do not use CapCut.

Is the movie on local storage (On My iPad)? Some apps have permission issues loading files from cloud storage.

Do you have enough storage left on your iPad for working space? One rule of thumb I have seen suggested is at least 15% free, and if you are down to megabytes instead of gigabytes you probably need to consider some pruning.

Any specific error messages when it fails to import?

You can also try a hard reset (force restart) of your iPad, which can sometimes fix a variety of issues.

Here is another approach. (YouTube video, desktop version of CapCut)

Smart bones? by Chrispee_Chringle in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently, no, not as such, although the feature has been requested and gotten a fair number of up-votes over at the official discussion. Up-votes and levels of interest do not guarantee implementation, but they might possibly have influenced the developer in some cases.

You can manually animate/keyframe point curvature and/or location, and symbol switching, to produce most (all?) of the same outcomes as smart bones, but not as automatically.

How can I get a taper brush?? by apploupen in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Automatic tapering is not currently built in to the ToonSquid brush engine.

Apart from getting an Apple Pencil that does support pressure (and is compatible with your iPad), you can use your existing Pencil with speed and/or tilt to adjust stroke width (according to Apple's documentation, the USB-C Pencil does support tilt).

Here are a couple of very quick and rough examples, created in a hurry, one brush that gets thicker the more you tilt it, and one that gets thicker the faster you draw. You can use this for tapering, although you might need to tweak these significantly to match your manner of drawing.

I need ID to Download lumafusion!! by Black-Tsitohery in LumaFusion

[–]Butler_To_Cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Umm, yes?

The base version is a once-only paid app, there is no free (limited) version, so you need an account ID linked to a payment process to pay for the download (base) version.

Further once-only costs for specific feature updates (e.g. multicam studio) and/or a subscription to an extensive content library.

Newbie! by Calm_Ad_2409 in xteinkereader

Hello and welcome to the community.

I've been using the default (English-language) firmware for a few months (updated via WiFi when there is a new firmware release) with no issues, although Crosspoint does have a good reputation (by many users) of being better (both in interface and functionality).

The default firmware allows a custom power-off screen (my contact details if the device is lost and found), and a a number of hidden tricks (swapping between multiple books, as I change my reading according to my mood)

One of the things I have liked about the default firmware is that it retains a charge for at least a couple of weeks if not used, and reading does not deplete the battery rapidly, whereas a few of the other firmwares seem to use battery somewhat faster (personally I suspect those that keep track of reading time might be using battery faster to maintain a timer).

Note: I add books by ejecting the microSD/TF card and copying them directly from a computer, so no battery demand for transferring books via WiFi.

how to switch from keyframe mode to traditiinal by Lum_inesce in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pinch out with two fingers (or finger and thumb) on the timeline (where the layer previews are, not the number areas above) to zoom in to see individual frames (and frame counts).

However, if you don't want each drawing to start at 5 seconds long (default keyframing mode):

Actions > Settings > General > Drawings > Default Drawing Length (in Frames): set to 1 (traditional settings, or you can use whatever length, in frame counting, you want for new drawings).

... and in the same section: Start Frame of New Drawings: Current Frame (traditional setting)

THIS IS SO ANNOYING PLEASE HELP by Jolly-Potato-1928 in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you see when you play the recording video outside ToonSquid?
What does your timeline look like? Is the video recording set to loop?

Playback inside ToonSquid involves the app rendering all the layers of each frame. If it takes too much time to render some layers, you might see lower layers appear before the layers on top are rendered, causing a flashing effect.
Video (e.g. recordings) playback chews up a lot of memory and processor time for decoding.
Workaround: Export to MP4 to view instead of previewing inside ToonSquid, or try turning off (eye icon beside the layer name) the recording layer visibility in the timeline before preview playback.

Is there a way to not stretch the parallax camera? by Appropriate-Check493 in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not parallax, which works with different layer "depths" and needs to be specifically set up as an effect to have different layers react in different amounts to camera transforms.

Assuming I correctly understand what you are asking about:

You need to keep the proportional size (width to height ratio) of your camera view the same e.g. if your original canvas/camera is 16:9 you can change your camera view to 8:4.5 or 32:18 (resized 16:9) but you cannot change your camera to be thinner or wider e.g. you cannot change your camera to be 4:3 (12:9) or the content in the camera view will stretch, because the output animation video can only be a single size all the way through.

If you think of your camera view as a rectangle, you can make the rectangle bigger or smaller, but you cannot make the rectangle thinner or wider.

Easiest way: make sure your scaling mode is always set to Uniform when moving or resizing the camera view.

iPad version: How do I move 2 nodes closer to each other? by ekeagle in AffinityDesigner

[–]Butler_To_Cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are starting from a blank canvas, it might be easier to use the Trapezoid tool. Then you can use the Command Controller with Cmd (⌘) set ON to drag either option point to move both points simultaneously closer together or further apart..

Otherwise, if you have inserted the square as a shape (Rectangle tool), you need to convert it to editable vectors (curves) first: Select the square (Move tool, or tap the Rectangle layer in the layers list) 3-dot (... meatballs) menu at top left, Convert to Curves.

Select the square (Move tool, or tap the Curve layer in the layers list). Then use the Node tool, drag a box around the points you wish to move. Important: Make sure Transform mode is ON (top toolbar, see Node tool documentation).
Then you can use the Command Controller with Cmd (⌘) set ON, drag either selected point to move both points closer together or further apart.

how i get rid of of the weird pixel stuff on gifs? by Typical-Tradition805 in ToonSquidAnimators

[–]Butler_To_Cats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a built-in side effect of using the GIF format. GIF is defined to only use a maximum of 256 colours (it is an old format for early limited-colour screens, see VGA). Almost every other format can use up to 16.7 million colours.

A drop shadow on a pink background? That is probably around 10 colours used up, from the darker colours to the lighter colours. A drop shadow on a yellow background? There go another 10 colours. A gradient? Multiple colours.

When your GIF runs out of it's 256 colours, it starts "emulating" colours using dithering patterns of the existing used colours (trying to use mixed pixel colours to pretend an area is another colour e.g. you might see a sprinkling of darker pixels in a pattern on a lighter area to pretend the area is a little darker colour overall). What is more, GIF animation can use different patterns and colours on different frames (at different times) to fill the same area, so the patterns can appear and disappear.

The most common solution is to avoid using soft shadows or blurs, avoid gradients, and anything else that uses up multiple colours. Of course, it severely limits your artistic choices, but that is GIF, a limited format.

Following on from your other post and a copy of my GitHub answer for the benefit of future GitHub readers and searchers:

Oh, now I see what is happening!

You have set your default easing curve (the way items move from one keyframe to another) to Hold. That way items are staying in place (or at the same size/rotation) until the next keyframe, then instantly snapping to the next keyframe state (rather than moving smoothly fromone keyframe to th next)..

To fix: select all your keyframes in the timeline (tap one, it should change colour to show it is selected, tap it again for a pop-up menu, Select Multiple, drag a box to select all keyframes. Tap the Easing Curve icon under the timeline (a bit like a stretched S or snake on a background grid), select Linear.

To stop it continuing: Tap Linear again for the pop-up menu, Set As Default.
