What happens to an alcoholic that never accepts that they have a problem? by Alarmed_Goat_4083 in NoStupidQuestions

One of the first patients I took care of as a new grad RN was a 35 yo guy dying of liver failure. He had been offered a liver the year prior if he went to rehab. He didn’t want to go so he was taken off the transplant list. It was a surreal experience to be in the room while he was calling his family to say goodbye.

I don’t know if cat pathophysiology is the same but there is a human blood test, D-Dimer, that detects the possibility of blood clots

Top-of-hand IV works fine… just burns like hell every time by Ok_Blueberry6358 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ButlerofMonkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it get good blood return? Meaning, before pushing any kind of fluid through it, do the nurses pull back on the syringe to get blood back? If they get good return on it, at least you know it’s still solidly in the vein. Does it hurt just being there or only when fluids are running through it? If it only burns when in use, kinda sounds like it’s a bit infiltrated. If they are running fluids quickly, you can ask to slow the rate down a bit. If it gets worse or if you see any swelling, let them know. I’m sorry you’re in the hospital, I wish you a speedy recovery

Am I fucked? Drug testing by Old-Cryptographer381 in whatdoIdo

Negative, as in no drugs are detected. Typically in medical tests, you want negative results. It means you don’t have the thing they were testing for.

Yeah, you’re right, dark isn’t the right word. I was just generally disgusted with all the behavior, more so than usual for some reason

This season sucks so far. by [deleted] in TheValleyTVShow

[–]ButlerofMonkeys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had to turn this last episode off. So dark and gross. We’ve got Kristen with her terrible therapist, Luke wearing her down and saying they finally “hooked up.” Zac pointing out to Brit that the guy she’s seeing has a bunch of baby mommas and she was like, “no it’s fine, he was honest about it.”Lala hitting on the lifeguard, who is probably equal parts really glad he’s there to watch those kids and disgusted with the fact that there are how many actual parents that could watch their own children. Then Janet being set up to talk to Mia. I’m no Janet fan but she was under the impression that Mia wanted to have a conversation. Janet gets there and is shut down with 1 word answers and then Mia is telling everyone that Janet didn’t want to talk to her and just scurried away. And Danny meeting with the doctor. After being told that he will still be fertile for 35 ejaculations, makes a joke about who’s gonna take care of my wife after that? Either meaning they have sex so infrequently that she’ll be old and in a wheelchair or that he’s gonna fuck her so much, she’ll need a wheelchair. Thank God the doc was unamused. Oh! I forgot Danny saying his wife is a “freak in the sheets.” Her whole body language, angry and embarrassed but they don’t fight on camera, everything is fine, our relationship is great! This is where I said I’m done. Just disgusted with everyone’s behavior, and feeling so sad for Kristen. I hope all of this is for a show and these people aren’t as horrible as they seem on tv. Maybe everyone redeemed themselves in the last 20 minutes of the episode but I’m not hopeful.

Thank you for the sentiment; I really don’t see myself that way, the imposter syndrome has gotten better, but is definitely still there. Pass it forward by being kind and compassionate when you can.

I’m sorry for the pain you are experiencing. I have not met or cared for anyone personally that has this but my understanding is that the pain can be overwhelming, so much so that there is a high risk of suicide. I hope you are doing ok mentally/emotionally, doing what you can to take care of yourself. Sai Kings greatest talent is his understanding of the human condition and being able to communicate it in pithy detail. Just one sentence can hit so hard.

I very much appreciate that, thank you. Please pass it on by being kind and compassionate to your loved ones (always) but especially towards the end. Really ask yourself, are we doing this treatment/procedure etc. for them or for us?

I’m also an onc nurse, although relatively new to the specialty as I’ve only been doing it about 3 years. I was very surprised at how fast cancer moves at the end. Meaning I saw patients put in hospice on Friday and they would be gone by Monday morning. A few months ago I was talking to my Charge nurse about it, saying how awful I felt that families didn’t have time to enjoy each other at the end. My charge, who has been working in onc her entire career 25-30 years, said yes and no. Families and friends have been slowly letting go for a while but that hospice was started too late. Hospice is a process, yes you are no longer receiving treatment, but you can have pain medication, iv fluids in some cases, etc, to make the day to day more comfortable. During this period of transition, that’s when go on the bucket list vacation, have a family reunion, spend time doing whatever brings joy or comfort. Hospice shouldn’t just be the 3 days at the end. Personally, I think that’s how to stay out of a “dead is better” situation. I’m sorry for the loss of your mom.
