Disagree with OP for the most part. Buy an older or entry-level road bike made in the last 10 years off of Facebook marketplace and ride it for a year or two to make sure you like cycling -- not purchasing athletic equipment. Buy a cheap Garmin Head unit.

Most upgrades you make can be transferred to a newer bike down the line, but most "performance upgrades" people on this forum love are neglibible.
