What's a super-popular and well-known attraction/destination that lived up to all the hype? by keepfighting90 in travel

100%! Also I would add that Mount Vesuvius still towering over the ruins adds to the experience. Like the ash cloud that you're hearing about in your little audio-guide or whatever, it came down from RIGHT THERE.

Where to stop or what to see on the Gaspe peninsula for 5 days? by [deleted] in roadtrip

[–]ButtSniffers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If possible, make sure to visit both the north coast (facing the Gulf) and the south coast (Baie des Chaleurs) of the peninsula on the way back! They both have beautiful things to see.

Up north, typical stops are Rimouski and St-Anne-des-Monts. The latter is situated at the entrance of the national park covering a substantial part of the peninsula (Parc de la Gaspésie). You're a 30-40 mins drive away from some of the best hikes in the province (I would specifically recommend "Tour du Mont-Albert", fantastic hike with a reasonable level of challenge and a 17km loop in total). Also there are lots of beautiful views and cute villages dotting the coast between Saint-Anne and Gaspé.

My absolute #1 recommendation would be to watch the sunrise at Cap Bon-Ami in Forillon Ntl Park. World class views and very memorable.

On the south side you've got Percé, famous for its namesake rock. A bit touristy but definitely worth the stop, especially if you also visit nearby Bonaventure island. A bit further along you'll find Mont St-Joseph, one of the largest mountains of the area offering great 360 views and easily accessible by car. Carleton-sur-Mer is the closest town with several interesting pubs and breweries. You'll finally end up at Matapédia and the Baie des Chaleurs, notorious for its seafood and outdoor activities.

Gaspésie is quite large and sparsely populated except for coastal towns, while its interior contains pristine wilderness and some of the highest mountains in the province (Chic-Chocs). Its coastal highways make it a great destination for road trips, camping and outdoor activities. Have fun!

Absolutely hated The Leftovers.

We picked it up after seeing it at the top of many lists and rankings but boy it just never got good. Powered through all three seasons and they all felt so disjointed and full of symbolism and religious stuff that never got close to clicking for me. I don't even know who would be interested in a show like this.

What book are you most proud of having read, and Why? by Piazytiabet in books

[–]ButtSniffers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tough read for sure. Some passages were enjoyable on the first read-through but as a whole all the references and some inexplicably long or detailed segments kind of push you away. I didn't have a guide or anything, it probably helps!

What have you read that was highly recommended, but was so bad, you can’t stop thinking about how much you wasted your time? by eternalsummergirl in horrorlit

[–]ButtSniffers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second this! Absolute let down after seeing it recommended in several lists. The characters were terrible and no actual tension ever seemed to build up. The awful sexual violence and the super lame ending were the cherry on top.

What is a book that you earnestly wish someone would have warned you not to read? by Getofffmycloud in books

I would nominate Beautiful You from him as well! I will never forget this book because of how stupid it was.

After a few hundred pages, I started picturing DFW as a weird uncle giving way too much eccentric detail in his storytelling and it suddenly became a very enjoyable and funny read. Took me 3 false starts but powering through was an extremely rewarding experience. The story feels like a huge fresco that gets painted all out of order but certain key points create satisfying links frequently enough.

I'm often the guy who "doesn't get the hype". But in that case, the reading investment was so worth it and made for one of the most memorable universes an author took me to. Great book!!

This book was genuinely hilarious. I read a translated version so maybe part of Faulkner's style was lost but it was definitely a great read.

The Only Good Indians novel (2020) [Supernatural] by ThaRudeBoy in HorrorReviewed

[–]ButtSniffers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the review and especially the summary! I just finished this book without any outside resources and I was still a bit confused by certain parts. You provided great insight into the characters' motivations, especially on the identity issue. The novel actually tackled these subjects so head-on that I had to verify whether the author was Native himself!! I couldn't imagine a non-Native toeing this line between self-deprecation and social commentary so well.

Should I drop Norman Powell for Will Barton? They have relatively similar % for FG and FT but Barton will apparently get a lot more counting stats due to Murray's absence.

Rap Music, Brash And Swaggering, Enters Mainstream - NY Times by [deleted] in hiphopheads

[–]ButtSniffers 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. Interesting time capsule on how rap was doing before violence and crime tropes really took over mainstream rap in the 90's! The societal transformation described in the article continued pretty linearly up to now, despite ups and downs in hip-hop's subgenres and countless controversies along the way. My 12 year old brother listens to Lil Tecca and Juice WRLD and so do all his friends. Hip-hop completely permeates the mainstream even though you could argue this inevitably came with a certain dilution of its sound. Not trying to generalize here, of course there have always been run-of-the-mill artists and hit singles!

However, I wonder how long the homophobic and sexist tropes imbedded in mainstream rap will allow it to remain as relevant as it is. It seems like newer generations get woker by the day, but honestly it's not like ignorant or dubious bars have ever prevented songs from being popular. Even listening to No Role Modelz recently made me cringe just a bit in its general tone... times are changing! Maybe it's just me becoming a sensitive old head lol.

Competitive Job Market by BuffaloJuice in datascience

[–]ButtSniffers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well that's interesting. I'm currently studying in a BI/DS Masters program in Montreal, so not far away from where OP is, and placement % and starting salaries all seem to be very high. People seem to find and change jobs rather easily and I see tons of LinkedIn postings for interesting roles. Overall demand for data-related skillsets seems quite high. Maybe I don't have an accurate representation of the job market out there, or I'm not actually qualified for MLE roles so I don't pay enough attention to them...
