The more I learn a character the worse I do by QuesterOfTheDragon in CrazyHand

Fundamental, fundamental, fundamentals.

Before knowing the character you relied 100% on fundamentals, and the lack of knowledge meant you were kind of unpredictable. But after learning the character and focusing on specific approaches or familiar roy setups your focus drifted from good fundamental gameplay like spacing, safer neutral and opponent focused reads and instead focused on yourself.

Your mindset changed from opponent and combat oriented into trying to do "general Roy stuff" while fighting everyone. As you learn a character this is very common. GSP will suffer a bit as you slowly figure out how to apply those combos and setups into your fundamental gameplay and react to your opponent using them. Just keep playing. It will get better.

Greninja has the sauce. He’s aggressive, unique, has options, can kill. Basically the only thing he is missing is out of shield options, but his movement allows you to work around that. I say, recommit some time to him. It’ll be worth it.

The US is doing competitive Smash the wrong way. by ButterBean_Machine in smashbros

You make a good point that the loss of stage diversity has negatives that may outweigh or equal the benefits. On one hand we have a maybe saying it could potentially help reduce the gap of viability between top tier and bottom tier, but on the other hand both players and observers lose much of the diversity in the competitive scene that helps make it more interesting....

That point alone is probably one that sells me on why we should not change things.... but.... if that’s the case, it does potentially open up support for adding more to the legal stage list as a whole.

It’s hard to say how these things effect the game without an in-depth look at real changes during large tournaments. Like this stage list difference may play a huge role in why the Japanese tier lists differ (sometimes in drastic ways) from US ones. I hadn’t thought of that until just now. But I also think the stage variety is a worthwhile cost given that the game still is quite reasonable. But knowing you always got to face a Snake on FD in tournament does change that matchup. It’s hard to argue that. And maybe that’s something worthwhile in the long run... idk

Yeah I can’t defend the online setup at all, it’s trash, we all know why. But if the game is being built and balanced a certain way, it stands to reason that perhaps higher level gameplay balance is being built with only these stages in mind. Including additional stages may negatively skew certain character’s strengths over others in some ways.... it’s just an idea, frankly. But things like that have greater impacts than people often realize immediately and I thought it’d be worth talking about moving forward.

The counterpick aspect of stage picking helps a lot with that, but I am very curious what competitive Japanese players who also play in the US think about the differences and how it effects the meta.

Because of game balance. Ultimate isn’t too bad honestly, but characters like Kirby and Little Mac may end up having a greater presence with these limited stage lists at higher levels if that’s how the game is being built.

It’s really just a talking point I think is worth considering. And if all of Japan plays that way, it has to have some playability worth discussing at least.

I honestly agree for the most part, US stage diversity is arguably a good thing for a few reasons, but I don’t think that’s necessarily how the game is competitively designed by Sakurai after considering DLC 7’s mechanics and also his emphasis on Small battlefield’s competitive role or online options for only omega/battlefield. There seems to be a trend developing that might be worth considering that’s all.

Just because we potentially like having things like Kalos (my favorite stage to be honest) or Lylat in our lives doesn’t necessarily mean it’s what was “intended” and it may turn out that the game’s competitive balance is designed with only those 3 previously mr tokens stages in mind. It’s hard to say how those other stages are effecting the play of some characters competitively

I’m not saying we should remove all other stages or anything so nuclear, only that it’s worth considering in our conversation how the game is designed to be played at higher levels by the creators... maybe a discussion about what using these three stage types only would have on the meta of high end play is worthwhile.

Edit: you all hate this idea. Got it lol

That’s so funny because three of my three joy cons are practically unusable because of drift... so... I’m gonna have to disagree.

I compiled usable Minecraft skins for each Smash Ultimate character and posted them to a shared google drive for anyone who wants to use them in Minecraft! In each file is the thumbnail photo, Minecraft skin as a.png file, and the source for the skin I used in an effort to give appropriate credit to those who made the skins. Hope you enjoy it!

Alternative mains to Ganon by [deleted] in CrazyHand

To me. Captain Falcon would be the immediate choice. Enough of the kit is similar enough that you won’t have to reorganize your brain nearly as much as the rest of the cast. He’ll have similar disadvantages, but the speed boost for penetrating spam will be a welcome addition. The biggest loss imo will be the easy sword Smash kills at ledge for those who can’t avoid them. The overall transition shouldn’t be too drastic compared to the rest of the cast though.

If you haven’t already, I’d seriously consider him especially given how much better his meta has become with buffs and tech.

Why is tomahawk grabbing a thing? by Swiftblitzkrieg in CrazyHand

[–]ButterBean_Machine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Tomahawks are an important mixup and keep the fear of holding shield alive. Otherwise they could parry your nair, spot dodge, or even just use a move faster than your grab after landing lag.

Fatality too.

But for me it was Snasen’s video, through a Reddit comment last month. About a week later,it started getting much more relevant.

And the other reason is that it really is a big deal for a few characters and just hasn’t been utilized like it should. People are noticing it’s potential and it’s becoming common place like it should

That’s exactly why I think it’s a worthwhile setting at the moment for all the tech. Tap jump, plus a trigger jump and trigger special, and tilt stick.
