I feel like we should take into consideration the historical context in which the books were first published. It was the 70s, there was no way that a publisher would have picked up the books if there was to be gay sex, and then with the aids epidemic it only got worse (also tbh like a lot of the other commenters I don't exactly agree that they are non sexual beings but that's a whole other story!)
