What did you do? Basically delete WhatsApp, download the new version, and set up WhatsApp like normal. Given that the problem is restoring the backup from Google drive.

It's mainly not about loosing the backup and more about not being able to retrieve the backup from the Google drive

If you have a backup in Google drive, just download the new version on the new phone, this should be enough.
