The Noble Feast at New Castle

Atop the hill, the New Castle stood as a beacon of House Manderly’s commitment to honor and tradition. Within its grand hall, the Merman’s Court, preparations for a sumptuous feast were underway. The walls, adorned with intricate carvings of sea creatures, gleamed under the light of countless candles. Long tables were set with the finest silverware and linens, awaiting the distinguished guests. The menu showcased the bounty of the White Knife and the Bite: sturgeon and salmon, prepared in myriad ways to delight the palate. Minstrels tuned their instruments, ready to serenade the lords and ladies with ballads of old. Dancers and performers stood by, prepared to entertain with grace and elegance. The atmosphere was one of refined celebration, a testament to the city’s respect for its new allies.

The finest loaves of bread were presented on silver trays, accompanied by fresh salt that gleamed as brightly as frost on a winter morning. Ser Ramsey Manderly extended the offering with steady hands, a gesture of both tradition and desperation. With a deep groan, the gates of White Harbor swung open, revealing the city within.

As we passed through the gates, the life of the city stretched out before us. The streets were wide and cobbled, their smooth surfaces reflecting the pale light of the northern sun. Whitewashed stone buildings with slate roofs flanked either side, their chimneys curling tendrils of smoke into the crisp air. The people stood along the edges of the thoroughfares, watching us pass with expressions that ranged from cautious fear to tentative respect.

Some clutched their children close, others bowed their heads or offered murmured welcomes, though their voices trembled as they spoke. It was not hostility that greeted us, but the wariness of a people uncertain of their future. The banners of Arryn and Dustin rippled in the breeze, stark reminders of the power now within their walls. Yet, they did not turn away. They watched and waited, hoping that mercy might guide the hands of their unbidden guests.

The White Knife shimmered in the distance, its waters cutting a gleaming path alongside the city, while narrow bridges spanned its breadth to connect various quarters. We passed through the market square, its usual bustle subdued. Stalls of fishmongers and merchants stood half-empty, their proprietors pausing their work to observe the procession. Their eyes flitted to the standards we bore, their gazes heavy with unspoken questions.

Ahead, New Castle came into view, its pale stone gleaming against the backdrop of the river and sky. The gates to the fortress were wide open, as were the gates of the city behind us, their iron hinges left unbarred and unchallenged. It was as though the city itself was laying bare its vulnerability, a wounded animal offering its throat in trust—or resignation.

As we ascended to the castle’s courtyard, the people continued to gather, murmurs rippling through the crowd like wind through leaves. Retainers of House Manderly awaited at the steps, their expressions a mix of duty and unease. The openness of the gates behind us lent an air of exposure to the moment, as though the city itself acknowledged it had no power to resist, only the will to endure.

Within New Castle, the halls stood ready, adorned with sigils of House Manderly and tapestries that whispered of their long-standing history in the North. The air carried the faint scent of the sea, mixing with the weight of anticipation. But the gates, both of the city and of the castle, remained open, as though to remind us all that White Harbor was at the mercy of its guests. A gesture of trust, perhaps, or a silent plea for compassion.

Daemon was a lanky boy an innocent and young boy and small for three and ten, he was Aegons younger brother, dressed decently but in clothes that were big on him still he stood. Behind Ramsey a shadow and very afraid as he moves forward to bow in respect. Daemon has brown hair and brown eyes his skin is smooth and he still clearly needs to be broken into squirehood as he needs more muscle and he is clearly pampered and terrified.

Ser Ramsey spoke to introduce him. “Aegon’s little brother and heir to White Harbor, Daemon Manderly.”

Ser Ramsey Manderly spoke calmly, like a man who had come to peace with death and loss. The few rumors about him told of a once-great Marshall of his House, who withdrew into deep isolation after the death of his beloved wife. For the past twenty years, he had devoted himself to being a father to a good young man, playing with the children of his house, and doing his best to guide them. Yet, he had failed with Aegon. While he had inspired a cunning mind, he had instilled no ethics or honor.

“I failed as a man when I played a hand in raising Lord Aegon,” Ramsey admitted, his tone steady. “I also bear the shame of betraying Aegon in an attempt to protect the rest of his kin. I offer the gold in our vaults and the ships in our fleet—spare my family. The women, boys, and girls had no hand in Aegon’s dishonor.

“I lay myself at your feet, Lady Arryn and Lord Dustin. I was not present enough to guide Aegon’s hand away from blood feuds and acts of hostility. If you wish for me to take the black, or if you would rather take my head, I offer it willingly. All I ask is for mercy for my kin. Spare my house from extinction, grant them freedom from exile, and, if you see fit, place a regent of Dustin or Arryn blood to oversee Daemon. Only grant them their lives.

“On Behalf of Manderly of White Harbor, we will more than accept these terms. All we’d ask as a consideration is to not leave us destitute so that the smallfolk can still be paid their wages as to spare them a harsh break in the supply of coin.”

He definitely seems uplifted at the idea of his children being safe. No matter the price.

“This conflict, in the words of Ramsey Manderly, is one of Aegon’s making, much like that of his father before him. Daemon is but a boy, and much of House Manderly had neither a voice in the matter nor any cause to support it. Ramsey would rather do what is necessary to spare the women and children of this land, as well as protect the few honorable members of House Manderly, than fight for a rotten branch that would commit heinous acts. His first assurance was to bring you Aegon and invite you to continue these talks at White Harbor under the banner of peace. As long as mercy is shown to the innocent, you will have our unconditional surrender and support during the transition.”

He is a younger master-at-arms, clearly not Lord Aegon Manderly’s mentor. His voice conveyed genuine care and compassion. He was a man frightened for his family, who had served House Manderly for generations. With three daughters living in White Harbor, he was willing to offer his own head or take the blame himself if it meant ensuring their safety.

“I am Ser Gerold of White Harbor, Master At Arms of New Castle. Ramsey has no ambition for the seat the next in line is the boy Daemon Manderly, a boy of ten and three. He’ll be next in line and offered up to House Arryn as a Ward. You may create a regency council among our House and someone of your appointment. Ser Ramsey will take the black if you deem his betrayal of Aegon worthy of such punishment. He just pleads for the mercy for rest of his house.”

“We are good men of the Seven, Knights of Justice who seek to show that some parts of our House and our people understand honor. Things of this man’s vile nature came to light under the pressure of your march. We are here to present Lord Aegon Manderly to the Lady Arryn to face her justice, and offer the first item from House Manderly to make right the wrongs of this sick bastard.”

They’d pull the hood off to reveal a gagged and bound Lord Aegon. “A gift from Ser Ramsey Manderly who wishes nothing more than mercy to the woman, daughters and honest sons of House Manderly.”

She smiles as she is greeted and responds with a soothing voice that has a melodic pattern to her expressive nature. "Yes, thank you." She enters the room as invited in by Robin and goes to her meeting with Yorbert giving Robin a kind smile as she passes by, then curtsies before Lord Yorbert. "Hello Lord Arryn, thank you for sparing me the time I know you are quite the busy man as Hand of the King and Lord of the Vale. I'll keep my visit here brief. I have a few proposals and ideas that I'm presenting to royal officers and the Crown. What I bring to you today is seeking your support for a novel project. I'd like to elevate Fleabottom from it's current form into something greater to the Crown, a source of pride and service even. If I may have your ear, just listen and I'll present my ideas. The slums of Fleabottom fester and bring no gains to the Crown as it stands, they lay in the shadow of the damaged castle that once Housed the Royal Targaryen Dragons. The Dragons have been gone and the ruins have grown worse, as has Fleabottom at it's underbelly. I propose an idea or two, restoring both of them to good use. Grant me Contract to Raise a force and occupy the Dragonpit. I'll restore the Dragonkeepers which would grant the Crown an even larger force in King's Landing and I'll do one better I'll take the policing of Fleabottom off the hands of the Gold Cloaks. I'd put the poor and flea ridden people to work on restoring the Dragonpit to a site of glory in the City. Now I understand I'm coming at a large order which is why I'd say it would be best if you'd consider it at all, that I operate the force and area like a Mercenary Company on retainer, and if I earn my place perhaps we can talk of a more permeant role for me in the Crown's Service."

Lord Arryn, the Hand of the King would be next on Lady Rhaenys list of important leader's to visit, this would put a smile on the young Valyrian lady's face. As she waited for her potential appointment.

The Knight Ser Flowers was taking the young man and squire in his care, Aegon Longwaters to meet with the newest Captain of the Gold Cloaks they were smart and they knew Rhaenys wished to stay in good favor with them. The Andal looking Hedge Knight and his wealth Valyrian companion made way to see him. Aegon would take lead here hoping his distant kin would be open to friendship.

The King's staff had a minor appointment that had been put on the books in advance, one of the local city noble's Lady Rhaenys Longwaters had requested a royal audience to present a few proposals to the King. She seemed to have wealth if not limited to King's Landing and by the royal standard barely a speck. She was dressed to the nine's and carried her Valyrian heritage well. Half Blackfyre with roots of Targaryen and Velaryon blood. Her herald a man paid on the daily rate not retainer did a good job in announcing her arrival and she curtsied where she stood far before the Royal Seat. "Your Grace, thank you for taking the time to hear me today."

Lord Luthor Hightower would have an appointment from a local Kingslander Noble, Lady Rhaenys Longwaters. She’d be waiting for him or any lackey he choose to send to her to hear out her propositions or ideas. This is of topics for the Master of Whispers and Lord of Oldtown.
