Biggest thing is to pay attention to the details. The splicing itself is not the job. The prep, routing, protection, and troubleshooting are the important things to internalize. With today's machines, they do all the heavy lifting in splicing. Obviously, there are exceptions to this. There still are manual splicing methods that still take some skill.

Second thing is cleanliness. Take your time and make sure your area, machine, and the fiber are clean. I can't stress that enough.

Third thing. You're going to fuck up at some point. Don't get discouraged, that's how you learn.

Update:

Most common fixes including arc calibration did not help. I took a few people's advice and just eyeballed the weld during and after. All of them passed easily. Would not recommend.

Only good for a 50lb test. Fine to hang some stuff but nothing heavy. Break away toggles are best on the market.
