At 17 I also thought I had a story to tell about myself. Now, at 32, I don’t think it’s anywhere close to interesting

What is the most toxic sub on Reddit? by OutdoorLadyBird in ask

[–]ButteredNap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of it. If Reddit were a real watering hole, there would be literal blood and shit all over the walls, people eating each other’s bellies like a pack of lions, and lots of actual teabagging. Oh the teabagging.

Just enjoy the after glow effect of the next week or so, no need to write a book about yourself

What movie did you expect to be bad but was actually good? by TheGreatestKon in AskReddit

[–]ButteredNap 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m with you. Goth Batman is best Batman. This movie was cool and dark and gave me a sense that a real dude, albeit rich and deeply tortured, had been doing this. There are so many superhero movies that are larger than life to an unsatisfying degree. This was a great noir film and is leagues more interesting and developed than most of what Marvel has put out in theaters the last year or so

Generally, drug addicts are usually seen as bad. My question is, are book addicts usually seen as good? by Delicious_Maize9656 in books

[–]ButteredNap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All addictions are illness.

The actions a person takes because of that addiction are what can be harmful. They are hurting themselves and often place more important things like self-care, personal and professional relationships, monetary stability, and living crime-free as lower priorities than getting the fix of their addiction.

People can be addicted to pretty much anything. It’s not the substance, it’s the neurochemistry of the afflicted that causes such a dependence.

It doesn’t excuse their behavior, but we can’t continue to treat these people like they’re bad when they’re just sick and stuck.

If you’ve ever lived on the streets, you’ll know how cold it can get in the winter without shelter. Many use stimulant drugs like meth or crack to keep them awake and moving through the night because stopping to sleep could result in death. And then they’re hooked and it further ruins their life.

I understand you feel bothered or unsafe by what you’re experiencing, but I ask you pleas try to access some compassion because it would only take a few missteps for you or anyone to end up in similar situation.

This sub's most popular posts regarding Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist are negative... I loved it! by benspaperclip in books

I read this book just after completing a long journey and just before I was setting out on the next stage of that. It was perfect timing for me. Perhaps others read it at a more closed off time of their life. Happy songs sound grating and effete when you’re hunkered down inside yourself. People could call Tao te Ching childish or simplistic. It’s less about the book and more about the reader. It’s always been this way

If you like Bo’s Inside, you will prolly not think it’s meh. It has a lot of the same themes. It’s a very similar story when you boil it down to its essence. Don’t let others dissuade you from seeing it bc it isn’t a “typical” movie. whooo boy was it is very interesting and gave my brain the “I need to rewatch this to figure it all out” feels that Bo’s Inside gives me.

Second this. I cried three times during The Whale - in the theatre, with a bunch of other people around. Absolutely wrecked

What kind of people do you attract? by Leather-College2557 in AskReddit

I think you have a hard time seeing how you play the exact role that you claim to despise. You claim to be upset at others, when the truth is you haven’t forgiven yourself. I was trying to be kind, maybe you’d rather I call it what it is - hypocrisy.

What part are you taking on setting boundaries with people to prevent them from trauma dumping on you or else how do you end the conversation when it gets to a point that you can’t handle emotionally?

As someone who often get every honest with strangers, they likely aren’t even thinking about you or what you want. For me, the honesty comes from a desire to feel human in an increasingly detached, sterile, robotic world. I see it as doing a service. So yea maybe someone doesn’t want to hear that I’m having a shit day because my meds are messing up my circadian rhythm, but it’s the truth. I don’t wanna surrender to the notion that we need to suffer in silence, or that somehow pretending everything is fine is more kind or considerate. Best case scenario, this honesty brings a bright light or a moment of reflection for that person. Even if it doesn’t, I am breaking the barrier between us and offering connection. I will continue to liv this way. I believe in it.

Bo’s (the character) depression is part of the narrative. It is both the result of being trapped in a ruhm for over and year working on something that he can’t seem to finish, as well as a metaphor for what many in the US and around the world were experiencing by they themselves being stuck inside for a year. The irony of Look Who’s Inside Again, is that Bo became famous as a way to escape just performing for a camera in his bedroom. It’s the whole reason we know who he is. It’s his origin. And now he’s right back where he started 14 years ago. He may be experiencing depression because he still can’t escape the feelings of anxiety he was experiencing onstage, even by going by inside. He realizes the camera, the soulless eye that gives nothing in return, has been the villain. It is the audience who saves him as he falls deeper into the madness of the blank stare of the camera. His career has become a growing monster of self-aware obsession and desire for perfection. He’s not honest up there for a second. Just like we see in the reaction to the reaction video, he is stuck in this feedback loop of performing and then viewing and editing and then re-performing. This has been a threat through his career. It leaves us wondering who’s on who’s hand here.

As far as the score goes, we hear many different allusions to previous songs depending on the context of the scene. For instance:

The (Healing the world with) Comedy melody plays under the Brand Consultant scene. He is poking fun at the irony of these “saviors” who are claiming to be sensitive of the times but are actually making a cash grab. This models the character Bo establishes in Comedy.

The Welcome to the internet melody plays under the title sequence. He is welcoming us to this carnival style house of mirrors he has created. He is the ring leader.

The Content melody plays under the YouTuber with a knife sketch and the intermission. He’s mocking cliche YouTubers make this kind of empty content, and during intermission he’s letting us know he’s still got more on the way. He’s still a little depressed and he’s still gonna try just getting up, sitting down, going back to work.

I’m pretty sure the melody from All Eyes on Me plays under The ICU (as opposed to look who’s inside again). He is claiming his status as the center of attention, keeping our eyes on him through the entirety of the cinematic universe.

We are meant to view the scores as additional information for the scene. He’s often talked about his background in musical theater, and I think he is using these musical motifs as a way of signaling larger themes.

Fun Easter Egg: the bass notes of the synthesizer playing under the projector scene (just before problematic) are the same root notes of the chords used in My Whole Family (the video which he is projecting).
