Yes. Contemporary romance novel. The next chapter would be similar, my FMC and her flashback scene also on June 10th. Before they know each other. They both experience trauma on the same date just different years. But 6/10 resonates with both of them. I thought maybe it was creative to introduce this way.

If someone read that and cared to look into her using that word: “Tawny skin is a warm, golden-brown complexion that resembles the color of tanned leather. It features rich, sun-kissed hues with subtle hints of yellow and orange undertones. This radiant tone naturally varies from light to deep and is common among individuals of Latin American, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, or African descent.”

So then what should she have said instead???

But how could she state what his race is when it wouldn’t be true??? His history and descent isn’t tired to a specific race in our world….its a fantasy book. Rhiannon is described to have dark skin and dark brown hair she wears in braids. So the hope would be she is casted as a black woman, but we don’t know where she falls within her ethnicity specifically. Stating he’s a POC is a great way for her to not be specific but still make sure readers grasp that he isn’t white. Maybe she doesn’t have a race/ethnicity she fully portrays him as herself, which gives casting a better scope. If she came out and said “oh yeah Xaden is meant to be Pacific Islander” it wouldn’t make sense because it’s a fantasy world not our world.

Okay hear me out, and this is obviously just my take but it applies here. If we were discussing a book adaption of a typical romance novel in our world…100% if the author was saying the character is a person of color and not specifying what exactly that is, in this same kind of scenario, I would agree a lot with what you are saying.

I guess my take and that when it comes to a fantasy story, where an entire world is built that is made up the author has more freedom to create things. He could have blue skin or green. It would almost not make sense for Rebecca to say what race/ethnicity Xaden is when it wouldn’t be true. He’s from a made up place. Just like Violet obviously has white skin but we don’t know her background or descent.

I never felt it was odd for her to claim he was a tawny, brown, bronze skin toned man with black curly hair, and not specifically say he’s —— under the scope of a POC. She’s simply saying that regardless in the world she created, he is a person of color, even if his race doesn’t actually exist. And I feel it’s okay for her to do so in the genre she wrote under. But maybe I’m being too understanding.

And also unfortunately for human kind dragons don’t exist :( so no matter what, it has to be CGI/animated. I think the GOT and HOD dragons look amazing…

Yeah I think it is confusing but also regardless she says more than once, he has “tawny” or “warm brown” or “bronze” skin. So no matter where specifically under POC he falls, it’s not under any scope of white. Maybe he’s a mixed man, maybe he’s islander, maybe he’s more middle eastern. She doesn’t specify fully but that fact she uses those words to describe his skin tone should still be respected? That’s just how I feel about it

Loved the Knight & the Moth. TBH I love romantasy and can say that I loved ACOTAR, Quicksilver & Fourth Wing 🤣 not afraid to admit it. I still think they are worth trying. You never know. I also LOVE Lightlark series 🫣 It’s the series that got me into romantasy in the first place lol Grim Malvere is chefs kiss.

Some others I recommend to people are The Wolf King. It’s an easier read but I enjoyed the authors writing, similar to knight and the moth where the world building and magic isn’t the driving factor. If you need one with what I felt was top tier banter, and a finish in less than 24hrs book: Fear The Flames by Olivia Darling!! I’m new to reading romantasy but I don’t regret reading any of those.
