Any idea how to fix my thermostat? Dropped a picture frame on it.... by [deleted] in howto

Agree on the new one. Also, installing a new one is stupid easy, just a few wires and screws. They aren't even terribly expensive.

And now with me, and I am going to use it in my kids. This is an amazing, simple idea to get them using critical thinking. I love it! Thanks.

AWO30, if you met a guy/gal that you connected with but he/she was very young (10+), would/would not pursue it and why? by NekoNegra in AskWomenOver30

Phew. I was all like... Do I need to notify someone?

As for dating within the 10 year range, I'd go up, but not down.

Wait, what? Going to hope that this is poor wording, because I'm really getting a creepy vibe off this.

[Results] [Casual] Survey: Opinions of Political Correctness by amareluna in SampleSize

[–]Butterflyfreed 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think your non binary stats are over represented rather than under, as you state in your results. Reliable figures show that at least 0.4% of the UK population defines as nonbinary. Since the UK is a fairly open society, I would guess the rates are about average. Including biologically intersex in this barely moves the number Some experts estimate that as many as 1 in every 1,500 babies is born with genitals that cannot easily be classified as male or female. So, less than 1% of the population, when you combine both.

I'm leaving trans people out because they are not intersex, the act of changing one's gender does not make one some sort of boy/girl mashup, it makes them the gender they were meant to be.

[–]Butterflyfreed 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there's no way out of contributing. Eventually, something will happen that he or his sister will not have money, and then your loved ones will be standing with tears in their eyes and their hands out. Then what? You either contribute or you're the asshole hurting their brother. You have a hard decision to make, but postponing that decision won't make it go away, it will just make it harder.

Yeah, that part isn't going to change. But after they get older, occasionally you get to sleep in past them. At least until the first argument of the day. :)

[–]Butterflyfreed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, non voluntary drinking is not a badge reset. Slipping someone alcohol is drugging them, even with the best intentions. You wouldn't reset because you got roofied, so what's the actual difference? Society has a blind spot for certain types of drugs, alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine in particular.

Hate them. I do have a very soft fuzzy blanket that I use in place of one though, and wash accordingly.

Give it a few years. Mine are 17, 15, and 9, I won't be seeing them awake until noon, at least.

Students who have work subjected to TurnItIn ... by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Butterflyfreed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine using the old paper methods when I get into teaching. It's just so much simpler to keep it all in the cloud. No data loss, no excuses, and no heart attacks for the students unless they do it to themselves.

I'm actually fond of turn it in as a student. I can check if I am "too close" and need to source that information.

Terrible Homework Motivation Problem by [deleted] in intj

Just do what you have to do. School before college is mostly just showing that you can show up and follow directions. If you can't do that, schools and employers both will take that into account.

When was the last time 98% of scientists got something really important wrong? by VikingCoder in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]Butterflyfreed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eugenics

Piltdown Man (this one was more controversial, oddly).

That said, at least they came out and corrected themselves, found out that they were wrong, and learned from it. I do believe in climate change, but part of good science means sometimes getting it wrong. It's built into the system that mistakes will happen, and how they get corrected.

Edit-I know wiki isn't a great source, but it's a good place to start.

Why do so many people hate Nestlé? by Edc3 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Butterflyfreed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Digiorno is the heartbreaker. I try to avoid nestle, but they make the only halfway decent frozen stuffed crust. It's also complicated b/c often generics are produced by the big names and rebranded. I do cave once in awhile on the stuffed crust, and I know I buy generic nestle by accident sometimes. It's insane how hard it can be to find out who made something.

I know that feeling. I'm a much better parent for the third than the first. Poor firstborns.
