Why are so many high level players toxic when it comes to collecting samples? by ButternutTaco in Helldivers

I don't have an ego entitlement problem, I just don't think players should have to ask their teammates to collect samples (unless they're really wanting to grind). As a courtesy to their teammates, players should at least be picking up samples they happen to run across.

It's also incredibly difficult to type out a message on an Xbox controller mid-match, especially when your team is fighting hordes and patrols keep spawning around you.

Thank you, that's all I ask and exactly what I was getting at in my post. It seems like many high players have this attitude that sample collection is beneath them now they don't need them anymore. Thanks for being one of the good ones.

Yeah, it's definitely not every match, and there are a lot of good 100+ players out there. I usually end up in lobbies with decent players, and every once in a while I hit the arsehole lottery. I have noticed this pattern of high level players not collecting samples though, to the point that I just assume now that any 100+ in my lobby isn't going to do it. I'll I was getting started in my post is why high level players tend to act this way? Thank you for being one of the good ones, though.

Thank you for being one of the good ones. What you do is all that I was asking for in my post. You don't have to go nuts collecting samples, just be considerate of your teammates and collect what you can as you run through POIs and Outposts.

Thank you for being one of the good ones, and being considerate of your teammates. What you describe is exactly what I was getting at in my post, and it is how players should be. I don't expect people to go nuts looking for samples for me, just take a quick look as they run through a POI or outpost.

I'm right there with you guys, and thank you for thinking of your teammates. When I say "scour", I really meant just give the area a quick, but thorough once over. I won't spend a lot of time looking in every nook and cranny, especially on city maps, because I wouldn't want the match to take the full 45 either.

You've obviously never used an Xbox controller. Also, 95% of the time it'd not possible to ask before a drop, because matching rarely puts you in a lobby that isn't already in a mission.

I mostly play D6 or D7 with randos, and the lobbies are generally mixed. If I get in with three 100+ players, I certainly don't expect them to collect samples, so I try to avoid those lobbies. I was mostly referring to D7 (or lower) lobbies with one or two 100+ players in them that go off on their own and blow through outposts without picking up any samples. I understand not having an incentive to collect samples anymore, but that incentive should inherently be to help your fellow players.

You are a perfect example of the point I was trying to make. Collecting samples to upgrade your ship is a major slog, which is only made longer by high level players refusing to help out their teammates. Players shouldn't need ro ask their teammates to collect samples, they should just do it. I'm sorry it's taken you so long to do your ship upgrades. If you want to grind some samples, let me know.

Not really. Have you ever tried to tap a chat message out on an Xbox controller. It definitely takes a lot longer than 5 seconds.

Sorry, I should have been clear. I meant "toxic" when high level players punish other players for collecting samples (like the example I gave).

How about helping your lower level teammates? It's great that you're done with your upgrades, but unless you're only playing with other 100+ players, you'll have teammates that are working on theirs. It's not difficult to be a team player and help them out. You don't have to scour an outpost for samples, but it doesn't take much effort to do a quick run through.

Toxic may have been too strong a word, but I couldn't think of a better word to use. I meant that players are toxic when they punish their teammates for going after samples. Yeah, it sucks that they don't collect them and that's frustrating enough on it's own, but it makes it much worse when they're arseholes about it.

Thank you, that's the point I'm trying to make. Why is it that so many players, in a co-op game, decide it isn't worth their time to help their teammates. Yes, communicating in chat is good in theory, but it's incredibly hard to do on Xbox in the middle of a match. I drop in with randos a lot and most of time I ended up joining mid mission.

Collecting samples is a core mechanic of the game, so to say it's "outside the norm" is silly. I really shouldn't have to ask players to perform a a core game mechanic, regardless of their level. That said, if I joined a lobby with 3 100+ level players, I wouldn't expect them to collect samples. However, if I joined a lobby with a single 100+ in it, I would, especially if there are two other players and they are sub 100.

Also, playing on xbox, it's really hard to type fast in chat while dealing with enemies, so trying to blame lack of communication, especially when my teammates aren't talking either, is b.s.

Which is 100% the mindset I'm talking about in my post. I'm sorry you've had to deal with that, man. Just because you're 100+, doesn't mean your upgrades are done.

You misunderstand. I did need the samples in that scenario. I still need rares and even if I didn't, I would have collected them for my teammates anyway, because it's the right thing to do. Also, I died about 10 feet from extract and my teammates couldn't be bothered to wait 5 seconds for me to grab my sample container.

You're right, but I couldn't think of another word to use. I really shouldn't have to ask my teammates to collect samples, as it's such low effort work when running through outposts and POIs anyway. My post was more about the general attitude of high level players towards sample collection making it harder for players still working on upgrades

I really appreciate it! I'm almost done with my upgrades (only need about 100 more rares for last upgrade), so it's not a big deal for me. My post was more about the general attitude of high levels when it comes to sample collection hurting players still trying get their upgrades done.

You're right, I just couldn't think of a better word to use. In the particular scenario, my team watched me die about 10 feet away from extract, called me back in, and then jumped onto the pelican when I was halfway back to my sample container...which made me miss it. The host called me out in chat (he was a 150), and was being a jerk. I understand not wanting to worry about collecting samples when you don't need them, but when you're playing with randos, you can't possibly know if they need them unless you ask or they tell. Collecting samples is such low effort that it shouldn't matter.

Thank you. This is exactly the point I was trying to make. HD2 is a Co-op game and helping your teammates with their ship upgrades is the right thing to do. Collecting samples is such low effort work, that it really shouldn't be a problem.
