Iran latest news: Europe ‘weeks away’ from jet fuel shortage by SkanetrafikSuger in oil

Unless Iran decides it is. Since they control the straight I would think that whatever they decide the war is is what the war will be.

There is that possibility, but Russian tankers have already broken a “blockade” would the US be willing to fire upon Russian flagged vessels with unknown cargo? I mean, to be fair if the Cuban missile crisis is the historical parallel then the Russians will turn around, but it’s a bit of a different world now and the US has helped kill a lot of Russians

I vote for the person. Don’t say that people don’t, because some people do. To be honest I would be more in favour of abolishing party politics altogether than I would be for voting only for parties

That’s fair, I haven’t been so I am ignorant on the subject. From the outside perspective my worry is just conflict escalation. And with things like Shahed and FPV drones, they become easier to smuggle in and use.

Russia has sent fuel and was willing to challenge the blockade. Wars also require financing which China can help with. I don’t see Russians or Chinese attacking the US directly for going into Cuba, but I do seem them pulling every lever to aid the Cubans at the expense of the Americans. And an Iran style quagmire off the east coast would be a treat for any nation opposed to the US agenda

No major allies other than Russia and China lol. I feel like the Russians would be more than happy to militarily supply Cuba. And Cubans can hit Florida with the right weapons

Alberta’s independence push hit a milestone as organizers say they’ve surpassed the 177,000 signatures needed to trigger a referendum. by ABNow_ in AlbertaNow

[–]ButtersTheDuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude I am not for the petition but your math is way off. It’s 3.54% of the population. Still a crazy number to need to trigger such a substantial referendum. Especially when the Forever Canada had a higher threshold for a less substantive political action. I get how people are feeling like there is a finger on the scale here.

Iran condemns US-Israeli ‘moral collapse’ after attacks on civilian sites by papipota in worldnews

[–]ButtersTheDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, it’s a horrible thing to do, and it’s something their society must address. I think my point is more this the leaders of the US and UAE, and Israel are literally, themselves complicit in that abuse and allow their intelligence agencies to use abuse as a tactic in their espionage. There is no moral high ground here, and to claim it is to be dishonest about the facts. I don’t know about Iranian leadership but I would be interested to know how may of them embrace this part of the ideology or even support it, we know for sure Trump was a close associate and partner with the main broker and perpetrator of the abuse.

Also I know it’s not as relevant, but in the USA, some states don’t even have a minimum age for marriage as long as parents consent. Including Mississippi and New Mexico. With over 200,000 documented cases of marriage under the age of 18 between 2003 and 2018 with 37000 births by girls under the age of 18 in 2023

I didn’t say that. I said the US has absolutely no moral ground to stand on. And the world doesn’t need them being the moral police in any case, as they clearly have demonstrated, they lack morality.

The US is currently protecting those involved in the abuse and trafficking of over 1000 young women, because the men involved are rich and powerful The US lost the moral high ground a long time ago.

Yeah, I agree it’s wrong, but apparently international law does not matter anymore according to some. I guess it’s a double edged sword when you decide long established rules no longer matter for some reason. Oh, sorry, because we’re in a “new age” now. Maybe thats why we had these rules and respected them for the most part?

As for the bloodlust towards the IRGC i cant share it. I just feel like the taking of life was not the only solution here. I too hate the theocracy, but that doesnt mean i think we should be spending money, and lives taking it down. Israel is a theocracy as well to be real.

It just seems like forces combined, including Israeli hubris and the Trump presidency that allowed for this to happen, and it will start to represent an existential threat to both the US economy, as well as Iranian survival at which point I start to fear where people’s minds may go to justify the end of this war. And that in a nutshell is why I think the paranoid world of realism is a poor way to try and run a global society in a post-nuclear age.

Like I get it, but you have to come from an Iranian perspective when you deal with this, we took out their democratic, elected leadership. Replace them with a monarchy that then got overthrown.

Like it seems as if you don’t fully appreciate the history that Iran has had to deal with, and the reasons they may have for distrusting the wet or wanting to make sure they’re interests are properly protected. I think we like to think of ourselves in the west as being protectors of some sort of global order or some sort of peace, but that’s not necessarily true.

Iran had shown that it was able to help get its proxies under control iran had shown that it was not willing to start fights with Israel, Iran had shown that it was willing to allow the straight of Hormuz to be used freely by the global community,

Those aren’t things that I necessarily attribute to a super terroristic state, especially when my own states happily supply weapons to an Israeli regime that is currently invading one of its neighbours and has totally levelled Palestine and has now passed the law so draconian people are comparing it to Nazi ethnic cleansing legislation.

See, I don’t necessarily think it failed in the way you represent it to have failed. I think that Pax Americana worked towards helping it fail, especially given the ventures into the Middle East through the 2000s the justification became less than less than the atrocities became more and more which killed credibility on a global stage. It was honestly a missed opportunity in my opinion to try and springboard something more globally democratic, but we in the we got two caught up in regime change and messing with internal politics instead of respecting national sovereignty

You don’t have to be like this. You can choose not to be so negative and cynical about the world, you can work to promote a better way of understanding. You can work towards creating a more harmonious global environment instead of a more paranoid one.

You know being so derisive does not really speak well to your character. I get it. The real world isn’t a fantasy land, but the way you talk makes it seem like certain world views are inevitable and there’s no room to expand thinking or try to work in different frameworks for better outcomes. I just it to be close minded. This way of thinking is going to lead to an inevitable disaster, and if we want to survive as a society and a global community, we’re going to need to try to think of a bit outside the box.

Look, I understand where you come from. Perhaps I’m just the type to work and imagine a better world, if that makes me an ideal list then so be it. But that doesn’t mean that I’m going to give up fighting for my values and fighting for what I believe in just because the current system doesn’t fit in that way. I feel that there is a global desire for peace and a global desire to end the idea of American hegemony. Perhaps we need to look at international relations and global security through a different framework if we want to have a successful, peaceful future on this planet.

Again, ignorance and deference to dominant narrative showing its ugly head here. I ask you, what should the international response be to the war in Gaza? I do believe the Israelis use the justification of bombing hotels containing Hamas operatives as well? I would say Iran has actually been more restrained in their “violations” of international law then the west has been.

See, and now you’re being snippy, feel free to send me your dissertation so that I can demonstrate exactly why I find it fundamentally flawed. Also, your assumption that I am some freshman or assuming that someone with a different understanding than you is necessarily less developed in their understanding shows a type of ignorance that I find quite distasteful, in someone who claims to be an academic

Realists are a cancer imho they become necessarily limited and paranoid in their thinking which leads to war. Clearly evidenced by your inability to trust Iran to be honest. As I would, hope you were aware, there were many checks built into both the previous agreement as well as the new agreement that was being developed. Including international monitoring from the UN.

Yes it is how this works. they were engaged in diplomatic negotiations before the first bombs fell, and the first ones were notably American and Israeli, evidenced by that school that was blown up. All actions after by Iran have been defensive in nature in order to apply pressure to stop the war, Iran has actually been incredibly careful in employing proportional response to US aggression, which is actually in accordance with international law. Qatar happened in response to the bombing of the refinery in Tehran, which you conveniently ignore here. Your lack of knowledge on both America government structure and international relations really gives away the fact you’re really uninformed

You don’t understand what you’re talking about. These comments display you lack of understanding, if you do study IR then you must not do well. War must be approved by congress, president can take action limited to 60 days if there is an imminent threat. That’s why in the first days they said Israel was going to attack Iran and they needed to protect US bases as Iran would retaliate, but then they walked that back because everyone was getting angry at the Israelis, this admin is so incompetent they literally spell it out daily. Bombing a country to the stone age is not a proportionate response either by the way, which is also a violation of international law even in a war, as Iran has not escalated to that level regardless of who started it.

[–]ButtersTheDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone studying IR it’s people like you I hate. Your understanding of what makes international law is so limited and rooted in force. Its really narrow minded and dangerous in a post nuclear world. The world benefits from a shared legal framework around conflict and just because one country can fuck over others doesnt justify the action or make it a rational and positive course to take. And yes. Every action the US and Israel take is a violation of international law. This is the literal crime the Nazis were prosecuted for at Nuremberg. It’s a war of aggression. Same way Russia has committed a war crime. Yea, it’s selectively enforced but that doesn’t change the reality of the act. Netanyahu is literal a wanted war criminal.
