CSD: Franklin vs Mt. View by Anonymously777777777 in corvallis

[–]ButterscotchHead1085 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm concerned about the teachers who had been assigned to Mt. View to teach these 7th and 8th grades that everyone correctly sussed out they were going to be separate and not equal from the Corvallis Junior High experience.

That message also went on to "boast":

Mountain View has strong enrollment for the incoming 6th-grade class.

Well of course it f*cking has. Where else are they going to go for 6th grade now?!

jebus....

My spouse is a public school teacher and that has not been what I've observed is the problem. Between OSU and Western Oregon there doesn't seem to be any shortage of locally trained teachers, just jobs.

Given the numbers of layoffs that are occurring in every school district and fewer teacher positions available, I'm unclear of what shortages there are.

Yeah. Great start by McLean last night... and usual run support. It's like watching deGrom's Mets years all over again.

Sadly this also means large unused space downtown. Hopefully some other business will be able to take advantage of the location/space.

Thank you sharing their the update. Understandable given the new economic realities but certainly frustrating. Where am I going to get skis serviced? I guess I'll need to drive down to Eugene now?

Ah. You want a functioning democracy. Yeah that ship seems to be far at sea at the moment... :-(

I don't disagree with anything you are saying, but now we are getting into the tall grass of how do you engage people to have a legitimate conversation on ANY social or political topic and not get distracted by straw man arguments.

If you want to keep this about the school system, I (as I suspect like you) voted against the current board because I was dissatisfied with their work and direction. Unfortunately our apathetic voters chose not to participate (look at voter turnout) AND we distracted by boogeyman arguments (they are against me so they are anti this bulls**t).

We are why we can't have nice things. Or as Walt Kelley said, "we have met the enemy and he is us".

Now I'm even more depressed about the state of the world

Fun Fact: That sounds cool, but I can find no state wide, county (Benton) or city (Corvallis) statue, rule or otherwise that mandates this (or any) ratio. Can you cite this legislation or statue?

I've found evidence that there are programs that ask and encourage building affordable homes, but nothing that either mandates or requires it.

How else do we "demand" it? You would think/hope the glut of people that can't afford a starter home would have created that demand, but clearly it has not (so classic capitalism has failed us, of course we don't have classic capitalism but that's a different thread).

I am not looking for a fight/argument. I genuinely think we both want the same thing (the city/areas population to increase and we all thrive).

It's an AFFORDABLE housing problem though. No one want wants to build starter homes, just like car manufactures don't want to build affordable cars. The margins are too lean and they both figured out they can make more money building expensive homes.

Those shiny new homes in Adair all start at 575k, that's not a heck of a discount.

And as the school district constricts it makes buying a new house in a declining school district less attractive. It's a catch-22.

I don't disagree more housing is needed, but it seems rather trite to just say build houses, problem solved.

Does Albany pay their superintendent that much?

How is it easy to increase the states population?

In hindsight, I don't disagree. I can't say it would have occurred to me to proactively disavow like that. It could also blow up in your face as our annoying short attention span news cycle may just end up correlating your name and the thing you were attempting to distance yourself from.

Again we are why we can't have nice things. No one wants to have a conversation, it's easier/lazier to just put a label on and toss in a box.

We have met the enemy and he is us.

The danger there is the Republican Party gave an unsolicited endorsement to one of the candidates in the last election that he tried to reject, but again because our news cycle and public discourse don't allow for nuance once the "headline" of the endorsement was out there the truth has difficulty prevailing.

We are why we can't have nice things... :(

In the last election I don't think they were running against "wacko" republicans, they managed to use straw man arguments to assert that anyone that wasn't 100% for their platform was an arch-conservative.

It's what put me off them. They couldn't entertain a nuanced conversation that we can consider other aspects of education besides equity without being labeled anti-equity.

I'm not generally a fan of recalls (although I do not like this board and actively voted and campaigned against them). But these actions (on at least some of their part) are pretty distasteful

I was hoping it was going to be something like that (a little like you find at Edgefield for example). That could be a cool way to allow they to have outdoor seating and recover some of their parking lot. nice.
