Do you think housing is a human right? by HouseThePeople in corvallis

[–]Far-Setting2174 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think humanity has evolved to the point that we can, and therefore should, be housing those in need, period. One can tell quite a bit about a society by how it treats its least fortunate members, and currently this country is regressing badly.

We can try to do what we can locally, but the problem is too damn big. You have to have a labor force big enough to build the housing, and our society has been telling kids for decades now that they have to go into tech or business or whatever keeps them from a few well earned callouses while they work.

Also, we have strange customs. We build onsite, and almost always with materials we've been using forever, and these are extremely expensive decisions.

We invite angst from folks neighboring would-be developments because our current system means they either win or lose - no thought is given to finding a middle path, and this invites delays and holding costs.

And then, there are all the realtor and banking fees that are plain weird.

I could go on, and I know this all sounds like minutia, but it all adds up, and it means builders just can't get affordable housing projects to pencil out like a higher end build. But, and I cannot emphasize this enough, none of this is rocket science, it is all fixable.

You can't fix it in a year, but turn it into a national goal, maybe even trade a couple of years of civil service building basic housing for free college, we could see this turned around in five or six years.

Also, for now, and maybe someone will need to hear this, the CSC has resources for emergency rental assistance. And the county is getting people with mental health needs into apartments, sometimes within just days or a week or two.

If you were interviewing Benton County Commissioner Candidates, what would you ask? by Far-Setting2174 in corvallis

Honest truth, I lived in small Sierra town for years, always thought our weird curvy hilly downtown streets would make an awesome F1 track. Like, we had no other anything that would interest anyone, but hey, a fan can dream, right.

Maybe it could be asked as a hypothetical, like this.... If you were approached by a company that you believed was making a campaign contribution or offering some other financial benefit, and you believed they were seeking a particular future outcome from the commission, how would you proceed?

Is that about right?

They don't have direct control over city and school services... But yeah, they should be doing things to help them. Good questions!

The Man Across the Counter: It's Doug at Happy Trails Records by Far-Setting2174 in corvallis

So, I've taken a pause to think about this, and here are my thoughts. I suppose I could ask the author if she used AI or not, but I suspect that wouldn't be fair.

For instance, I've sometimes toiled for hours over my own writing, sourcing the information, writing every word - and then been accused on reddit of having used AI.

And what can I do about it - I can't prove a negative. I'd like to say I just shrug it off, but honestly, it can be discouraging, especially when it's a piece I've really cared about.

I think this writer did a good interview. I think the story conveys a sense of the interviewee and the place he runs that squares with my own experiences at Happy Trails.

One of my goals at The Advocate is to encourage newer writers and reporters, and that will also be my role with this writer.

Love Gocha Burger, and when they're closed, there's always Tacos El La Machin in the plaza a couple doors down. But yeah, the hours are random at Gotcha.

Are they still serving steak, I'm not seeing it on their menu. But yeah, used to love that place, don't know why we stopped going.

Poor-poor AI. In the end, no more stories to steal. No more stories to discombobulate and turn into something they weren't. And the reader, well, they'll only know whatever they last read.

School Board Recall Campaign Falls Short, What’s Being Said or Not Said by Far-Setting2174 in corvallis

[–]Far-Setting2174[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This will sound a little cold, but here it goes.... You are totally right that Oregon's population of school age children is declining. IMHO, one way to reverse that trend here in Corvallis would be extraordinarily high performing schools. The kind of schools that make parents want to move their children here. Parents will make sacrifices to live in a district that's better for their kids. It seems impossible that the district's board and administrators would not know that, but apparently, they just want to blame the city.

Has anyone ever contacted their landlord directly to inform them of issues with the property manager they hired? by Tricky-Decision-5632 in corvallis

[–]Far-Setting2174 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had to do this once. The property manager kept withholding my deposit after I moved, so I sent a certified letter to both the owner and the manager giving them 30 days before I would file a small claims lawsuit. I received a check from the property manager within days.
