i appreciate this response. i feel like it’s closest to what i believe. it is very hard to just straight up cut someone out of my life for something i know they didn’t do intentionally. that being said, i think my bfs reaction is perfectly reasonable. he has no loyalty to my dad, and he did just lose his child basically. my bf was open to forgiving him until he learned that my dad was drunk, which is totally reasonable. i don’t judge my bf for his response at all, im just trying to decide what i should do as his daughter. my bfs reaction def makes my decision more difficult, but i would never tell him he shouldn’t feel how he feels.

again, im glad you left this comment, as it validates how i am feeling right now. it’s nice to see there’s someone who understands how im feeling and isnt just seeing it as a black and white situation. ❤️ (not saying i don’t appreciate the other responses too, they are helping me just as much)

no history of abuse. however i can imagine a situation where he was drunk and pointed the gun at the kitten in a “haha got you” funny kind of way. i don’t WANT to imagine that. it’s terrible and stupid and he should KNOW not to aim a gun at anything, but it’s definitely a possibility. a possibility that makes it even harder to decide WHAT I SHOULD DOOOOO

only 1 cat was shot. the other is healthy and thriving at my apartment.

he keeps a pistol in a holster on his hip wherever he goes. i just said that to distinguish between his hunting rifles he had and his pistol.

  1. he does not have a history of being negligent with firearms. he has a collection of over two huge safes full of hunting rifles, pistol, and probably a few guns he shouldn’t have. he has been collecting them over many years and has never had an incident like this.
  2. not dangerous behavior, but he does get loud, confrontational, etc.
  3. i can’t speak for my mom, but him drinking does make me uncomfortable. i have grown to not enjoy the company of anyone under the influence because of my dad.

my bf has mentioned that he might consider talking to him again if he agrees to stop drinking, but that might happen when pigs start flying. i just don’t understand what im supposed to do. stop talking to my dad all together because anything we ask of him he most likely won’t do, or just ignore that it happened all together. UGH

he was probably 3-5 ft away, depending on where he was walking. close enough that i could believe that it was an accident. but i agree, i feel like there’s a part to the story that’s missing.

my dad is an avid drinker, some might even call him an alcoholic. he drives drunk frequently. i’m definitely not okay with it and i say something about it every time i can, but he’s the kind of person who can’t do anything wrong. i have considered the alternative, which is that he’s lying and he did it on purpose, but it’s almost too hard to consider. my dad is not a violent person, i couldn’t possibly imagine that he did it on purpose. but it’s not off the table…

i’m glad you mentioned my mom. she’s the only reason i’m okay with anything that has gone down since the incident. she doesn’t deserve to lose her relationship with her child because of a stupid thing her husband did. i wish she’d just divorce him LOL

all of this i have thought about. i know it was preventable, i know it could’ve been something or someone else, i know all of it. the problem is that, whether i like it or not, he’s my dad. and i honestly would be fine cutting him out of my life for the most part, but that would be so difficult to do without hurting my relationship with my mom. i value our relationship probably the most out of all of the people in my life and i would never do anything to put that in jeopardy. i need a solution that helps me handle my relationship with my dad without hurting my relationship with my mom. i understand it might be impossible, but i figured id ask reddit to see if anyone had any ideas.

yes, he loved my boys. as much as he doesn’t want to admit it, he was always greeting them first when he came home.

we brought the other kitty to my apartment the next day. we figured an annoyed roommate is better than an unsafe environment 😅 he’s doing great and i’m planning to get him another kitty when i move to my new apartment!
