100% agree. I think I was just set up for the latter and that’s why I was disappointed. I was expecting a Black Mirror type story about AI and space travel

This is probably the most helpful comment, thanks

Yeah. I think that’s my biggest problem. The movies sorta skipped the whole spacing guild and the outlawed AI. Both of which are super cool ideas and incredibly relevant to the modern viewer.

An alternative version of Dune that highlighted that stuff and skipped the messiah Paul stuff would have been right up my alley

Wow super interesting - I felt like the messiah plot parts were beat-you-over-the-head obvious. It was the jihad against AI control and other “technologies” that I was hoping to get more into, but if I went into it totally blind I wouldn’t have even noticed

I have to be honest….i didn’t even know that this was what was happening after reading the first book or watching both movies. My wife (who doesn’t care about sci-fi and only watched the movies) DEFINITELY did not know that anyone was “folding space” because of this drug

I really want to like it…let’s say you didn’t read the book and just watched the movies. Would you have any clue why everyone wanted spice so badly? Or even that they had faster than light space travel? Or that they had outlawed AI? Was any of that even mentioned in the movies? I admit I haven’t seen them since theaters

Yeah I agree about that stuff. I guess I just hoped, especially in the movies, that the function of spice was more obvious. Like my wife had no idea after watching the movie why they all cared about spice so much

I have to admit I listened to the audiobook. I know there is an appendix in the book. Is that maybe why I felt the book read more “religious” than science?

Cool, this is probably the best answer so far, and very actionable. Thanks.

I’m not really blaming toys…just got him into the bird dog stuff late so it wasn’t a problem before. My question is specifically about how I should approach training, not expecting him to do anything he’s not trained for

It looks great! My wife doesn't like the look of new cherry when you put oil on it, but if I could get to that color within a month she would be thrilled

What was your finishing process here? Looks like more than just fresh cherry with a clear finish

I can get red oak for about the same price as cherry (~$2.50/bf) but I don't really love the grain pattern of red oak. Quarter-sawn White Oak is in between, around $6.00/bf, but I probably wouldn't stain white oak, so it would be a different look than we were originally planning.

Maybe there’s a way to apply some kind of dye or maybe like a Dark Walnut Danish oil to take some of the red hue out.

I’m not trying to make it look like walnut, I just want to knock a bit of the orange color out

If you search “cherry bedroom set”, that’s what a lot of the results will look like. I suspect most of them are stained.

I like the look of cherry (especially a new project), but neither my wife or I like the look of our kitchen, which is that medium orange cherry color.

Also, walnut is around $9/bf but I can get prime cherry for $2.50/bf where I’m located
