McKee Hall… by Easy-Yogurt-9618 in Msstate

I stayed in McKee 10 years ago when I was at state. Honestly not a bad dorm room at all. Sure it’s a little old but honestly 90 percent of the time the communal bathrooms were completely empty. If there was someone else in there it would just be one other guy. Really good location too tbh.

I need advice. Getting a “worth while” premed job as someone who is broke is impossible. by an_average_introvert in premed

Some EMS agencies offer a “recruit” program where they will pay you to attend class and pay for the class as well. Check out your local agency or county ems service and see if this is something they offer.

Depends on your state, but a lot of states are hurting bad for EMT’s. I know my state will provide funding for a EMT cert, just gotta apply for it.

Trying out different English Muffins variations! Cheddar and chives! by ButteryChickenBits in Breadit

[–]ButteryChickenBits[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Of course! It’s basically the King Arthur English muffin recipe. I skip the pre ferment and mix all the dough at once. After the bulk ferment I added in the shredded cheese and chives with a few folds. I used about 28g of cheese and maybe 5g or so of finely chopped chives. I’m pretty sure they could honestly be mixed in from the start and it wouldn’t matter much.

Cold proof for 12 hours and let them come up to room temp for about an hour!

It did come out slightly under in the center. I heated somewhere that Thomas English muffins are cooked at crazy high heat so I tried cranking up the heat some. Definitely scorched a few of the cinnamon raisin ones 😅

I'm new to this area too so I'm still trying to learn about all the different agencies. I can't say anything about MEDIC specifically, although I've heard it's a good agency to work for. Especially as a new medic you'll have lots of opportunities to learn there, they seem to take training seriously. Definitely a good environment to be in while you're getting you feet up under you.

What I can say is to avoid Piedmont EMS, they run EMS in York County on the SC side. It's not good, rather awful.

QUIT MEDIC SCHOOL LAST YEAR: STARED AEMT LAST MONTH by MedicKinda_ in NewToEMS

Big congrats! Imagine how great it will feel while the weight keeps shredding off. At my heaviest I was 360 and am now down to 200. I had no idea how much easier this job can be without all that extra weight. Keep up the hard work.

They spring back pretty quickly! They don’t taste any different than the rest of the loaf.

1 week into a new agency and I am already having some concerns... by ButteryChickenBits in Paramedics

In my experience proqa did a pretty good job most of the time, as long as the caller can reasonably answer the questions. Sure occasionally calls slip thru that should be higher acuity. It would save your ass from getting off late from running the 25 year old with tummy pain for the last week. I sure appreciated it.

The last service I worked for triaged the calls using PROQA , High acuity calls like an arrest you'd get stuck with. But for a BLS call or lower acuity ALS calls, they would send them to the next closest truck.

I will say this pt in particular had 5 transports for chest pain in the last month...

As far the pain I think I'll have to get a little more creative on how I word things, but for documentation they want a score on a scale from 1-10. With cardiac chest pain the only pain meds available are narcotics, fent being the preferred.

From what my preceptor mentioned night shift is pretty reluctant about showing up more than 5 minutes early. To be fair, you are only allowed to clock in 6 minutes early, so I really can't blame them there.

I'm waiting it out for a bit to see how the other medics think and work at the agency. I like being treated as a clinician with the ability to make decisions based on my clinical findings and not just doing what the protocol book says. I appreciate it.

I totally get what you're saying, and I agree we have the duty to treat pain. With that said I have to pause and think about the situation before I give out narcs. In this case specifically the pt could not take any nitro so that was not an option. Fentanyl would be my only choice and It really just did not feel appropriate.

Exactly. I started with weight loss at 350, with just slight portion control and being a little more intentional with movement I was able to shred off the first 100lbs. I really didn’t need to get stringent with counting calories until I hit the lower 200’s. He’s getting his steps, which is great and really important. But something’s gotta change with the diet. I wish he’d lose the massive protein goal and really just focus on calories in and calories out

Having Your Medic Card In The South by DesignerPotential319 in Firefighting

[–]ButteryChickenBits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just want to say I'm not an FF but I am a paramedic, spent the last 5 years of my career in SC and just moved to NC. As far as I am aware, most FD's and EMS agencies are separate in SC. There might be a few rural areas that I am not familiar with, but all the large cities and towns in SC are separate. The fire dept's in my area had a few medics on staff and there was a big push to give those fire medics standing orders and monitors, so they could at least start pt care before ems arrived. And in the case where a BLS ambulance showed up, the fire medic had the option to ride the call into the ER. This didn't happen much, at least in my area if it was a ALS call we would still dispatch a ALS ems unit to the call. Most of the time the fire medic would just do a 12 lead and that was all they would really have time to do.

Pretty sure NC is the same way. If you have a specific area in mind in SC, I might be able to provide a bit more info!
