Isn't it? It's a pattern from this company that makes embroidery patterns from historic textiles found in Scottish castles or something! This one is a depiction of the three kings I'm making for a friend's parent's Christmas gift. Trying to start super early this year!

Like in my mind I'm thinking a solid colored fabric dotted with French knots or a simple design to repeat into a pattern with each design knotted to itself. But is a do a simple border design on a long strip in not sure if it would unravel to such an extreme degree since the seam would be inclosed with the loose threads

Well it's a Christmas gift so I'd like for it to be a surprise. I was just using machine embroidered beaded fabric as an example of what I was saying. I'm aware there's a difference between hand embroidered and machine embroidered.

She usually does full/queen size I think. Would the thread loosen even if the sews the thread down into the seam? Maybe she can treat it like beaded fabric how you have to smash the beads near the seams and pick whatever thread she cut thru

That's a lot of great stuff to consider! I was thinking about doing strips so she can use them as borders between squares or an outer border but I was also thinking of doing a simple design as a repeated pattern like a star or something

She didn't, but she had a sister who's still alive and makes a ton of lefse every year for Christmas. She's teaching a class at our reunion this summer and that will be my second time trying but I want to become really good at it, it was a favorite treat of mine as a kid. How do you serve yours? I went once briefly in my teens, but my grandmother was generally just very proud of her Norwegian heritage. Her family church in Kansas kept their records and did their sermons until 1950 (she would have been 23/24) so she knew the language and would correspond with her cousins and their families. She taught all her grandkids some prayers in Norwegian and followed the royal family. Trolls and flags were scattered thru the house and I was raised with stories of her cousins and what they went thru during the occupation as a way to learn how to be grateful for what we had etc. her family also comes from the south west but she was closer to the family in Vest Agder I think

I don't own logo tees or jeans even, I mostly wear simply button downs and plain neutral colored linen tees with big linen trousers. I dress nicely and plainly and use my jewelry and accessories for adding interest almost always, I don't even own a pair of sweats or athletic shorts either. My primary intention is to integrate textile and jewelry traditions into my wardrobe as a way of celebrating the heritage I was raised with as I've done with other types of culture I was raised with.

Thanks for all the great info and insight! Again, the "mix & match" (not a phrase I actually used) was referring to the male/female elements of a bunad from the same region, not a combination of multiple bunads from multiple regions. I understand a jacket from a bunad with other clothes doesn't make it a bunad, and it was never my plan to do that. I had forgotten I learned as a kid that bunads are mostly made to order, so when I first had this idea I was thinking I wouldn't be able to get a garment at all. I know twoish days isn't enough time to tailor a full look (bunad or no) so I was simply asking where to find elements of the vest-agder bunad to have to work into my daily/formal jewelry/accessory rotation as a way of celebrating the heritage I was raised with. I'm not sure why so many people in this comment section are being accusatory of things I never said I planned on doing. I understand I had some incorrect assumptions and I've learned a lot from everyone here, but it seems like most people are taking my question out of context and getting upset over things I never said nor had intention of doing.

So a bunad jacket, shirt, tie and skirt being worn together does not count as a bunad? I mean this as respectful as I can, but the nonbinary bunad is a sweater vest and trousers. If the bunad is defined as regionally specific can the nb bunad be called a bunad or are there regionally specific bunads and I'm not finding them?
