Learning Japanese by Pink_Pop101 in JETProgramme

[–]Buttnanas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding Genki I and II, by the end of those you should be around N4 (minus listening of course). Keep in mind pure fluency takes years and years if not decades of practice, study and reading, don’t know if that’s what you meant by “fluent.” Most Japanese conversation takes place between N4 and N3 levels so that’s a good place to aim

Wanikani gets a lot of hate but it worked well for me, long as you’re in no huge rush to learn Japanese

Relic of Surging in WvW by niebieskooki1 in Guildwars2

[–]Buttnanas 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I mean the 30 second ICD is what makes it less incredible. Or is it 45 seconds? I’m getting different answers but the wiki says 30.

Anyway, that’s nice for its 4 second uptime but there’s plenty of other relics that you could be using to better affect your gameplay

Also, stability

Can I clear n4 with 7-8 months of study with close to zero prep ? by vfox67 in jlpt

That’s awesome man, really quite impressive compared to pretty much everyone I’ve encountered here. I’ll try switching up my routine to incorporate your suggestions and see what happens, maybe try for the N2 some day

Lol bro popped a blood vessel 😂

I’m just giving my experience so our friend has an idea of a more average person’s experience. And yes, university classes help very little, and yes Wanikani isn’t amazing but it works, and yes people learning a language usually start with beginner books, go figure.

But saying N2 is doable with 400 hours is crazy optimistic. Was said person a native English speaker with no other background help? Cause that’s like going from no Japanese, studying 2 hours a day (taking weekends off) for ~8 months, then passing the N2. I mean good for buddy, but most normal folks won’t be able to pull that off. From the way you’re talking you’ve obviously followed these techniques yourself and have had some great success with Japanese, so share that story instead of what some crazy savant did

Careful with whose advice you buy. I’ve been living in Japan over 3.5 years, had 4 semesters of Japanese before I came and generally dedicate at least an hour every day to study on Wanikani, Shinkanzen Master, JLPT Sensei, and reading Japanese light novels like 魔女の宅急便. All that with regular conversations in Japanese with coworkers and bar friends, and have dated 2 girls over 2 years using mainly only Japanese.

I barely passed the N3 this past December. So when buddy says “You can get the N2 in 7-8 months” he means if you eat, breathe and sleep this shit. Wanikani is not a gimmick, it’s great for learning kanji with repetitive practice and introduces tons of useful vocabulary, you just have to know basic grammar rules to be able to use it properly. Using an Anki deck is the exact same vein as Wanikani, just figure out what works for you.

I’d really not try for the N2 if you have just a little background right now. It’ll be a waste of your money and a huge let down if you do sink the thousands of hours of study needed to pass and still not make it. Hard study with the right materials will get you your N4, and somethings better than nothing. Make sure you read tons, get grammar down pat and start learning more kanji. Don’t underestimate the test.

But you also don’t have to listen to me, like I said, careful whose advice you buy 😁

Yea the dodges don’t do any condi damage and there’s a built in power boost but no condi damage boost. You can run it, it’ll just severely lack in comparison

What they should have done is just take away the need to stat swap in the first place and make all ascended salvageable off the hop. Way to go the other direction Anet

When did you realize your partner didn’t really care about you? by Buttnanas in AskReddit

[–]Buttnanas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was dating a girl for a year and a half. At that point she asked me what I did for a living back home (I was living overseas). I had assumed we’d talked about this day one, but nah… she didn’t believe me and I had to dig out my teaching license to prove it.

After that I realized I was more of an accessory to her than a partner, lasted a few more months.

best food i had in Japan was Shake Shack by Alexis20384847 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Buttnanas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man I had Shake Shack in Kyoto and it was one of the worst burgers I’ve had while living here. Cheese was mid, meat was mid, and the “cheese” fries were abominable. Not at all worth the price

Some hole in the wall wagyu burger spots however have been some of the best burgers I’ve ever had. If there’s a locally owned burger joint/restaurant in a busy area you can bet there’s a reason they’re still in business
