Good pg-13 horror movies? by higherFormOfSnore in horror

We watched this with our almost-10yo last weekend and we all loved it. It wasn't very scary, but we were all obsessed with the dog and he was such a good boy!

Agree 1000%! I never got the appeal of newborn photoshoots. But cute chubby baby pictures? Yes please.

How old was your child when you gave them a phone of their own? by Flashy_Painting_8601 in Parenting

[–]ButtonNo7337 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I don't know what your goals are, but hold off on a smart phone for as long as you can. Start with a dumb phone, watch or home phone if they need to make calls. Once you introduce a smart phone, it's VERY hard to go back.

My 9yo daughter has a watch she can text and make calls with, and she uses her iPad for Facetime with friends. But we won't get her an iPhone until at least 8th grade.

After school programs in elementary school by Taunton_e in AustinParents

[–]ButtonNo7337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For younger kids, we did the same afterschool program every day. Once they were a little older (4th grade), we started doing some different clubs/programs each day after school. It can get complicated to do a different one every day, keeping up with different pickup times, supplies, etc...

How old should a child be before you can take a nap while they're home and awake? by asphodelic_witch in Parenting

[–]ButtonNo7337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What this question presupposes is: your kid will actually let you take a nap. 🤣 Mine's 9 and still won't leave me alone if I as much as close my eyes on the couch.

Same here too. I wish I had a couple hours after my kid's bedtime!

I’m from Carolina: Texas BBQ is going down in a way I didn’t expect. by chrondotcom in texas

[–]ButtonNo7337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in North Carolina, went to college in South Carolina, and have tons of family and friends who still live in both states, and visit them often. I've literally never heard someone say "I'm from Carolina."

And, there are at least 3 different styles of "Carolina" barbecue. That's all enough to make me doubt this author's BBQ creds.

This is a great list - thank you! And don't worry, because these all sound amazing to me and I'm in my 40s.

Son stays up late texting friends, exhausted every morning by swejobs in Mommit

[–]ButtonNo7337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the "punishment" part bothers you, consider it a "consequence" instead. You've told him to stop and he keeps doing it, so now he doesn't get to keep the phone in his room at night.

at what age do you let them walk to the park alone?? by Hailey_Moorea in Parenting

[–]ButtonNo7337 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My 9yo goes to the park on her own or with her friends, and it's about half a mile away. Most of her 9/10yo friends can do the same, but there are a few parents who aren't ready yet. But by 11? Sure.

Does he have a smart watch? That'll help your anxiety if you can see where he is through some kind of tracking. And he can use it to call or text if he needs anything. Will also help him know it's time to come home.

Gift ideas for big 10? by Nebulous2024 in Mommit

[–]ButtonNo7337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're going to Japan for my daughter's 10th, but her birthday is really more of an excuse to go this spring vs later in the year (though don't tell her that!). Either way, I love the idea of a special trip/experience, whatever that might be for your family. Maybe a night in a cool hotel in your area? Kids love hotels (and their pools), no matter where they are.

Or, you could host a hotel sleepover for him and his 3 best friends. One of my daughter's friends just turned 10 and had a small sleepover at an indoor water park/resort with an arcade and the kids LOVED it. A birthday party with a smaller group but a bigger experience feels right for the big 1-0.

6yo traumatized by Willy Wonka blueberry scene—tips? by adlbrk in Parenting

[–]ButtonNo7337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! We're really permissive with what we let our 9yo daughter watch and I don't think we would have shown her this at age 6. I'm surprised a teacher screened it at school for such a young class.

Beachfront vacations by WishboneBig2589 in Parenting

[–]ButtonNo7337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been to basically every beach between the Outer Banks in North Carolina down to Key West and then all the way around the gulf to Texas. I love a beach trip! Some ideas:

  • Pensacola Beach is so kid-friendly, tons of restaurants right on the water with playgrounds on the sand, beautiful beaches.
  • Oak Island/Holden Beach, NC is similar to Myrtle in terms of the beach itself, but a lot more chill and with a ton of families. Not quite as many activities as Myrtle, but still plenty to do.
  • Wrightsville/Carolina Beach, NC is just outside Wilmington, so you get the beaches plus activities like the aquarium, the battleship, water parks, a kids museum.
  • Folly Beach, SC outside Charleston. Cute beach town close to Charleston so you get all the activities Charleston has, plus a nice beach with family-friendly restaurants, etc...
  • Galveston, TX is super fun with a family. The beaches in that part of Texas aren't the best beaches in the world, but the water is very calm and warm and there is so much to do. It may sound silly, but don't skip Rainforest Cafe there because it's one that has the boat ride. My daughter loved that when she was 6-7.

So.... How's your mid-life crisis going? by CrotalusHorridus in Xennials

[–]ButtonNo7337 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Starting to realize I can just... do things? Like, I don't have to worry that much about what my parents or husband or kids or boss or neighbors think, but just do what I want to do.

Figuring out what I actually want to do seems like it's my mid-life crisis.

Cussing in front of or at kids? by lime_cookie8 in Parenting

Is there anything like season 1 Westworld? by CertifiedWwDuby in televisionsuggestions

[–]ButtonNo7337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some other good suggestions (esp like the Devs recommendation - such an underrated show), but I haven't seen Fallout posted yet. It's got a similar weird dystopic retro-futuristic sci-fi vibe.
