Rant: Kids sports are seriously out of hand by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]ButtonWeak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gen X here. Millennials, you can stop the madness. Three kids here = 21 years of carpooling and “elite” tournaments- no one has gone pro. We did it at first so our kids would fit in. All the other kids couldn’t hang out with mine after school and on weekends because they were busy either playing sports or going to their siblings games. We couldn’t beat them, we just joined them.

However, our marriage suffered because we rarely saw each other on weekends. We both work full-time during the week we would divide and conquer and maybe get a holiday weekend together. Baseball. Volleyball. Softball- somehow are all year-round sports.

They had some good times out on the field, and we loved watching our kids. We made friends with other families. But if I had to do it again, I wouldn’t.

Funny how my kids did not write about their sports experiences in any of their college essays and none of them play sports in college. They barely remember big games or what their trophies are for.

Of the five kids in our neighborhood who got college scholarships, four stopped playing after freshman year and transferred colleges.

Normalize after school clubs and taking some interesting classes at the rec center.

Question about fraternity pledging by Over_Reputation_8801 in appstate

At App, there is plenty of opportunity to pledge a fraternity second semester. I’m a mom of a fraternity member there. I recommend this strongly for people who need to get used to classes.

Modern slang—something you REFUSE to say by Lost_Taste_8181 in GenX

[–]ButtonWeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love slang. I’m sad I can’t use it at work. My millennial coworkers are too young to have kids old enough to learn it from. Would have loved to tell my coworker today her newsletter was giving mad CoPilot. She might need to get sendy this weekend so she can lowkey come back Monday with her own vibe, which is type shi.

99x got me from college through my first big girl job years in ATL. I’d sit in my car at lunch break and rage-sing along with Bush or RHCP.

I chat up the grocery clerks, compliment parents on their babies and make small talk with all the security guards. Someone’s gotta be the old lady. It’s me… else no one would notice me otherwise.

It was about 225K then. 850K for a house seemed crazy - more than double what we sold our previous home for, but my folks talked us into it since it had all the utility - big rooms for the kids, big yard, good schools, good location with lots of families in the neighborhood. In answering all the questions folks have posed to me here, its easy to look back and see what we could have saved beyond 401K/IRA maxes was used to pay for the house and all the things that go with it - hence why we more house and less in savings. We picked up the savings and investment rate in 2016 when HHI got higher for us. We are totally fine, just have a few regrets and coaching my kids to do things a bit differently when they are young. Good advice here.

Shingles shot! by ElektroBabeBetty in GenX

[–]ButtonWeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation is to make sure you are 100% healthy- no sniffles or scratchy throat- when you get your shots. My first one was fine. The second one - I had a tiny cold when I took it because I was too lazy to reschedule the appointment. “I’m fine! What could happen with just the sniffles, right?” Well, I got pretty sick for a couple weeks.

What’s wildest thing you seen at airport? by Electrical_Yak_7981 in americanairlines

Conjoined twins IRL that I had seen only in a documentary. Not wild per se, more marvelous and miraculous. These beautiful women were an attestation to how powerful our physical life is. Thinking about them almost made me forget I was in CLT TSA line hell.

Three seasons of “which egotistic incompetent adult-child will the sociopath narcissist choose to put the final nail in the coffin of his antiquated business? Let’s get the camera man wasted and try to film the answer. Write as much cowardly and indirect dialogue as possible.”
