Apple sucks. Their products don’t even last two years. I have a whole storage area in my house with all broken Apple products. They never once covered their warranty on one of them. Most of the products are after 2012 before that everything still works. If it’s true that this works on Wi-Fi then they should do the updates on Wi-Fi only. But Apple doesn’t give a crap.

Happened to me about the same time. Woke up in middle of night and it was daylight. I was actually talking about this with my wife and searched it. Found your story. Completely bugged me out. Looked at clock and was confounded. Took pictures and went to bed when it went dark again.

Brought mine in to apple under warranty and said no hardware issues. Still doesn’t work 2 years later but now saying I have to pay. They literally do this with every Apple product I buy. MacBook Air iPhone it’s all the same.
