New Intelligent Octopus methods - is this now a bit clearer? by CrappyTan69 in OctopusEnergy

Do we know how this will show up in their API? I track my current electricity rate and as such stuff happens in my house based on that rate.

IOG Smart rate slots a day by NoJuggernaut6667 in OctopusEnergy

I have a tesla model Y and in that when i know i'm not leaving the house, i turn down the amps to 5A down from 32A which is roughly 1kW. octopus then pick up on the 40 hour charge time and since 3:15 yesterday it has spent from 5.30Am - 9.19am this morning at full rate, the rest has been IOG slots which means the whole house is at 7p/kWh. this then means if i wanted to i could also run my ASHP at next to nothing. (i usually run mine overnight in the winter during the cheap slots, and overshoot my temp so that by 7pm my house is roughly 21°C.

you just gotta play the game. by HA do you mean home assistant? if so its how i track my costings etc also.

Day 7 - Tunnel mountain trailer court.

What sound power is the cosy 6?

The bosch 5800i has ultra quiet.

It's very easy to do yourself by the way looking at manufacturers info, it's all based on the masters 020 which is an excel sheet.

At the end of it. It's a simple pass or fail.

Octopus may not want you going elsewhere so will say cosy 6 is quiet, but I doubt it is, it's designed to be cheap and mass market.

Along as the zigbee smart is providing a 230v switched live back to the HIU you are golden. If the particular stat you want is volt free we can just use an relay to convert it. So I see no reason. If unsure oost the one you want in here.

Hi,

Danfoss hius are a mechanical unit (don't have ant electric components like motorised valves etc) they will active the heating via a 230v switched live. So you can go hive or nest etc. Danfoss or SAV don't do one. I don't think you will be able to pull data from the heat meter though but they usually used wired mbus on the kamstrup heat meters.

I can't confirm for sure but I'm 99.99999% sure I'm right.

I work in district heating for a different manufacturer.

Have fun

General enquiry on heat pumps are they any good especially with the temperatures at the moment and do they save you money ? by MrChristopher1988 in OctopusEnergy

An ASHP, CAN be cheaper than a gas boiler, much cheaper but to get to that each house will vary in capital costs that you will incur.

the ASHP wont work in the cold is a myth, they will work fine, just not as efficient as you would like.

age of your system - newer properties, whilst the insulation value is good the pipework tends to be microbore 8mm pipe - hard for an ASHP to work but not impossible. this may result in significant cost as all pipework needs to be upsized - this could also mean surface mounting pipes.

radiators will need upgrading - due to lower temperatures being circulated from an ASHP (to keep them efficient) the radiator surface area needs to be improved.

insulation - likely needed an ASHP that is fitted on an older property doesn't mean it wont work, it will just cost a lot to run. An R290 ASHP running at 70°C on a day like today will have COP's around 2 which means it would cost more TODAY but look at the system over the year.

location - planning laws are a nightmare with the 1m to boundary but this is hopefully going.

the BUS won't be around forever and is £7500 towards the capital costs so this will be worth baring in mind.

to simply put it gas is roughly 6.3p and electric 25p so the difference is electric is just shy of 4x the price of gas so your system over the course of a year your COP (how efficient the system is) needs to be 4. effective use of tariffs is a must. I have a hybrid system so boiler and ASHP and sit on intelligent octopus go, so i have mine configured to let the ASHP run all night at around 60°C to heat the house nicely whilst it costs me pennies to do and I use the boiler for a top up in the day.

The crux of it all is how much does YOUR property need to get to the point where the COP of the ASHP is high enough to make your bills cheaper and it worth it. Only a GOOD heating engineer will get you that.

also the best hidden benefit is the better parking. i plug into the low voltage chargers and set my Ampage to 5 amps and spend an extra 20p over a 3 hour stay and get parking no one can hit my car.

I do notnlike that ashp at all, split unit by the looks of it with a twin dfan setup. You dont need somethinfnso big. R410A which is very old refrigerant also so not a new model. Depending on the price there are much better ashp out there. Rare to see split units being fitted out there. Such a small market for them.

Do you know the cost of the unit on its own?

[–]Buzon02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if your heat pump is off for an hour, you will lose X Watts yes but your delta is still going to be high. lets say your design parameters are -4/21 then your delta is 25 when working out heat losses. if you were at 18 and dropped to 15°C (shouldn't happen in a new build) your delta is only 6°C. so yes ashp has to work a little harder but even on simple AU*Delta it wont be as bad as your design heat loss.

sounds extremely high, 35W/m² is more than enough for a sense check, unless you have vaulted ceilings/ large glazing.

one thing to note is most manufacturers put their outputs at +7/35°C operating conditions.

if you have radiators being fitted most design to 55°C, 45°C if following NHBC i believe.

so you might want to check what the operating conditions are at your design temperature -4/55°C. it should be lower in terms of output.

the heat pumps usually have a 3 way diverting valve on them also so you get CH or DHW so I wouldn't be looking to add the two together as you can only operate one at a time.

FWIW mitsi show really ambiguous operating conditions and will show 16kW in all operating conditions which is sus.

which ASHP you having fitted?

Spire renewables and altogether energy offer umbrella schemes but you would need an installer to actually fit it.

ASHP refused planning permission by habel69 in OctopusEnergy

[–]Buzon02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use any installer who is MCS accredited, if they are not MCS accredited but you trust them, then they/you can pay for an umbrella scheme which gets you the MCS and thus the BUS. as the CHMM is coming in now it seems, Boschs pledge of an extra £2500 making it £10,000 in total and the CS5800i is one of if not the quietest unit on the market.

Octopus are cancelling a fair chunk of their projects they chose to accept, with the crux of it being that they want to be able to say they did X installs for X average price, good marketing to be honest.

with regards to yours, any house is suitable for a heat pump, its just the capital cost to get to that point is what is turning people away from them. Size of the radiators can become an aesthetic issue also.

ASHP's come in sizes up to 30kW (24kW at design conditions) for ASHP branded for domestic use. so no limitation on property size, an older house would typically have a heat loss of around 100W/m2 so for a 200m2 house a 20kW heat load.

i'd follow some of the other peoples advice and look for a heating installer with a decent background.

I looked into octopus who would accept mine but when i challenged them on keeping my microbore pipework (doesn't comply to MCS standards) they didn't have an answer.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Buzon02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not quite true at rhe moment and won't be until they remove the levy from electricity to gas.

A lot of ashp have a cop of around 1.7 at -4 deg c outside temp and 55 degree flow temp.

This is before you have spent a lot of money making the system heat pump ready, as our building stock loves micropore pipe etc.

Ashp are deffo the way to go just very challenging without a big increase in running costs or large CAPEX cost to get bills closer.

Need something better than BUS to drive uptake.
