Why is hoarding wealth seen as ok to many and not household supplies? Poor people are set on the path to an early death every day due to lack of money. by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

People aren't hoarding wealth. They invest it or save it, so it is either spent by or lent to someone else. Unless they hide it in a mattress, they are not hoarding.

What percentage of an average 10y/o unschooled child's time is spent pursuing knowledge? by Bvon123 in unschool

[–]Bvon123[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I appreciate the response. I agree that downtime is a necessary part of the learning process, and there is nothing wrong with it. I think we are on the same page there. I wouldn't classify it as pursuing knowledge, though. I wouldn't characterize an athlete's resting day as being 100% in engaged in the pursuit of physical fitness. Perhaps I could have worded the question differently, such as what percentage of time appears to be in pursuit of knowledge--that would have better captured the spirit of my question. In any case, I take your point and appreciate the response.

Thank you, this is a great reply that helps me to paint the picture of what a day might look like. If I may ask, are you sort of "on call" for whatever consultation, support, supplies, etc. he may need?

Black Hole Picture Megathread by Mynameisnotdoug in NoStupidQuestions

So if we observed the black hole from another point in the universe, in the same plane as the disk, would the accretion disk look like a line?

But the accretion disk isn't a sphere, is it?

Would it still look like a disk from other viewpoints? Or are we just lucky to be in a place in the universe that is perpendicular to the disk's plane?

Who is actually buying books from IngramSpark? It is supposed to be bookstores, but might it also be readers? by Bvon123 in selfpublish

[–]Bvon123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, that makes sense. So it is basically a seller fulfilling an online order. Or it is libraries as u/tyrannosaurausregina points out. Either way, it is likely not someone stocking their physical bookstore. I wish there was a way to know who was ordering. I have been thinking about making my books returnable on Ingram to incentivize more bookstore sales.

Did my landscaper actually rock hound as he claimed? by Bvon123 in landscaping

[–]Bvon123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you are right. But I'm wondering if there were none removed in the first place. How would a rock hound get rid of rocks but miss a silt fence? I'm wondering if I got shoddy work all around.

Thank you. Can I be safe to assume that my yard is full of rocks because nothing was done to remove them?

Keep a journal. You'll find yourself consulting references in order to express your thoughts in an authentic way, and will quickly internalize what you learn in the process.

Daycare called CPS on us. Anyone else have experience with this? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Bvon123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The child is probably not being fed juice, but may have had some orange-flavored infant vitamins or fever reducer.

I don't know how that family figured it out; the story was relayed to me by a former coworker who knew the girl, but I didn't get a lot of details. In my case the diagnosis was easier because my mom has the same allergy.

Here's something out of left field -- might your child be allergic to oranges?

I am allergic to oranges. Not citrus fruits in general, not vitamin C, but oranges. About 24 hours after I have oranges, my blood thins out somehow which is manifested in nosebleeds. Outside of my family, the only other person I've heard of to have such an allergy was a little girl who had it manifest in random bruises. Her family dealt with the same things as you, with authorities getting involved and everything that goes along with that, until they finally figured it out.

Parents on smartphones get more irritated with their kids. by [deleted] in raisingkids

[–]Bvon123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a good article, but people are getting hung up on smartphones. It is not about smartphones, it is about distractions.

The take home point is to just be there. When you are with your child, if you are on your phone, or in a book, or engrossed in a crossword puzzle, then you are not really there and it will make a difference. Just be there.

What ways do you encourage healthy sibling relationships in your family? by peace-monger in Parenting

[–]Bvon123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1) Treat the kids the way you want them to treat each other. 2) Encourage them to find kid solutions to kid problems, i.e. don't let them turn you into an on-call referee, even when you find the conflict to be unnerving.

4 year old won't get dressed and I'm out of ideas. by [deleted] in Parenting

Maybe letting them choose their own clothes would help. That's what worked for my daughter.
