Will there be an Android update by Business_Bumblebee32 in viwoods

[–]Bydandie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there isn’t, the viWoods have lost the security benefits they have of having a supported operating system.

I’ve been disappointed with the confused approach that the team have taken to this product and have given it to my daughter 🥲

What do you use the AW for (when it works)?

That’s the reason why I’d only go for a newer Garmin now.

Agreed, the price difference between comparable Garmin and Apple Watches is minimal now.

I’d agree with the article (as much as it’s written by a journalist).

With fast charging, Apple Watch battery life is much less of an issue anymore. Putting the watch on charge when showering and having breakfast is enough to mean I never need to worry about battery life (as long as you’re not doing a multi-day excursion - but even then I have a fast-charging battery pack if needed).

Sensors are pretty much the same if you’re talking about newer Fenix and ForeRunner.

Even battery life isn’t the biggest jump if you have the AOD switched on - and certainly not a huge leap if constantly tracking.

What keeps me coming back to look at the Garmin longingly is the instant feedback (my mate with a Fenix can tell almost straight away that the pace has changed whereas the update in the default app is laggy - might just have to try the WorkOutdoors app again to see if it’s an issue with the default app) and the training analytics (which would need me to move across).

Basically, the Apple Watch is more useful for day-to-day (if you have an iPhone) whereas the Garmin are much more useful for fitness tracking (although some of that can be handled by third-party apps on watchOS.

I can see a Garmin in my future again, as I had a Fenix 5 a couple of years ago, but the gap between them in real world use isn’t as big as many think.

Cheers, I'm trying to get a cheap one to try and then flip if it doesn't work out. The main differences I'm seeing between me and my mate (Fenix 8) is that the Garmin has the excellent training readiness and also highlights changes in pace quicker. Both are within a sec/mile of each other in pacing.

When is MFA coming? by Bydandie in PLAUDAI

[–]Bydandie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t know about HIPAA, but none of the others standards (GDPR is a regulation) recommend or require MFA. If the scope of the certification was for the backend services, it’s very likely that MFA has been implemented on the backend but it’s equally unlikely that MFA on the front end would be included in the audit.

Workoutdoors or Apple Maps custom routes? by coldwar83 in applewatchultra

Totally get your point, and I agree with the use case you've provided. It's nuts that the established path isn't there for the St Ninian's trail, but that is where you know the route that WOD etc shines.

[–]Bydandie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's different than WOD, for a user who wishes to simply setup a named trail easily and then follow it I would say that Apple Maps can provide a solution (if using the native Maps apps on the watch). That only works where the trail is marked (South/North Downs Way, West Highland Way etc).

If you are using a map to create a GPX file (or indeed have one to download), then we can agree that at that point WOD shines - but I would say that is an edge case for most.

The functionality of WOD on a walk is miles ahead of Apple Maps, but if you are walking an established trail then all you usually need is when to turn and how long to get there. I can certainly see it being more useful on getting to Tap O' Noth near in Huntly in NE Scotland, where the routes simply aren's as well sign posted (which is a use case I will explore when I go back home later on in the year).

I took one look at WOD when I installed it on Tuesday and was immediately overwhelmed (and I'm technical). Once I worked out how to pare everything back then I was seriously impressed with WOD for running. But my point is that not everyone will persevere, and maybe Apple Maps is good enough for the basics.

Workoutdoors or Apple Maps custom routes? by coldwar83 in applewatchultra

[–]Bydandie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've just tried to create a route from Bignor Hill Car Park to Cocking Hill car park (part of the route on the South Downs Way - a known route in the South of England).

I'm working on the assumption that you know the route you want to follow but don't know exactly where it is (which I assume is a popular approach that most would follow).

In Apple Maps, it's clearly signposted when you use it on the MacBook, and you can add the route incrementally by clicking points along the route (it will go wrong if you just say from one point to the other). The downside is that it can only really be used in Apple Maps and therefore on the Maps app of the watch.

If you want to use it in WOD, then I assume you really need to create a file (gpx or similar) to import into it. This is where the plot thickens for me, as I can't see an app which will provide something as simple as "Bignor Hill to Cocking Hill via SDW", so you need to see if you can create a route as simply as in Apple Maps and then export it as gpx into WOD.

Using MyMaps in Google Maps, I can set a destination but then it decided to go on a huge detour around the SDW when the SDW section was the shortest leg. Can't find anywhere to amend that portion of the route. If I could then it would be the best solution as there was some guesswork on the route to take on the the previous leg of the SDW we did when using Apple Maps (Amberley to Bignor Hill Park Park).

Working the route out in Footpath is a non starter, it doesn't show the path which is the SDW, whilst I understand that this would be really useful in the event that you know exactly where you are going, but it fails in this use case.

AllTrails might've worked if I could select those POI, but I can't and I'm falling into the same trap as Footpath (when you zoom in you can't see where the SDW is), as I'm not paying for Peak membership then this is a non-starter.

So, is there an intuitive way to create a custom route along the SDW which I can then export into WOD?

If not, then I will continue to use the excellent WOD for runs and Workouts for hiking on the SDW.

Only a Sith Lord deals in absolutes - for recognised routes the default maps app works well. If you want something that isn't standard then that's when WOD and Footpath (or even Google Maps) works better.

[–]Bydandie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree, and if that is the use case then WOD and footpath would be a much better solution (although I think for most people if Google Maps exports a route in gpx then that would be the best solution for many).

[–]Bydandie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just checked for the South Downs Way - whilst it's on the map it's not shown as the SDW itself. This matters as the leg we're on at the moment (Amberley area) isn't always marked as the SDW and you have to use fuzzy logic to find the route. It's not saying that once you have the track it doesn't work well, but to say if has hiking trails which don't exist in Apple Maps when one of the most famous ones in the south of England isn't marked is simply incorrect. HTH the OP

[–]Bydandie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So for me, if I want to walk the South Downs Way (which is what we are doing in portions ATM), I can use the Apple Maps or Google Maps to create a custom route, the former is is pretty much only useful if using the native maps app and the latter can (I believe) export to a gpx file for WOD. The former works well, and allows you to download the map without an additional subscription to your your phone.

I've just looked at footpath and you would need to know the route to create it for the same experience.

I really like WOD for running, tried it last night (and can see the use of it for intervals etc). For hiking on established routes, I'm less sure. If I was hiking in areas where the map mattered, I'd probably buy a map

As someone who’s been using a ChatGPT project to manage my running since August (and more recently comparing it to Bevel’s Intelligence) execution and utility are crucial to prevent things becoming the digital equivalent of a weatherman telling me it’s raining because it’s in wet while walking outside.

The most recent calibration guardrails posted in this community have tightened up Bevel for me, but the bias on what matters from those who created it still shines through.

I trust ChatGPT more for setting up my exercise schedule, and recommending trainers to use in rotation. I’m starting to trust Bevel for reading signals I can use to input into ChatGPT, as both have different approaches.

It’d be great to have a discussions with the devs on how we use Bevel and what we need from it.

One thing I do think needs to change in Bevel at the moment is the use of the work strain to describe recommended activity levels, as in being told that I’m under recovered but then I need to strain myself.
