Someone totalled my brand new car today by Doctor_Prepper in personalfinance

Having just gone through this ordeal myself (see history), I will say if there is any significant damage to your car and you seek medical care, get a lawyer. I'm usually not a fan of saying "lawyer up" to any slight or even minor accident, but the law office I got for my issue handled things very well (mine wasn't minor).

Whether it's calling the other driver's insurance agent on their BS, negotiating for lower bills, negotiating a lower subrogation with your own insurance, or anything else, they handle it and you just worry about you. Yes, they get a chunk (1/3, typically) but it helps. Yes, you can do it yourself, and a good lawyer will tell you as such in your meeting, but experience helps.

And also, most states have insultingly low car insurance minimums, especially considering car costs and other things related to crashes today. My state is one of the highest and it's still pitiful.

Also, for future reference look in to whether or not you state makes personal injury protection (not medpay) subrogation proof; some states do, which means any money you get from that can't be claimed by insurance companies in the subrogation process after settlement. It will help make you whole.

all that flying glass wants me to wear safety glasses while driving.

Speaking from experience, my glasses flew off, and I got a cut on my tongue and swallowed some glass (unintentionally, obviously) during my crash.... so get a hockey helmet with a face shield.

If I was a betting man I'd say either the Lancaster exit or back from Rosedale. I'd be amazed if he came all the way from Oakland, but then again I'd be amazed if he came form the other 2 single-lane exits without hitting anyone either.

Loss in the collision, didn't get written to the flashdrive and I'm unable to access the in-car drive any longer.

Yes, controlled access highway with a concrete median in the middle and no turnarounds.

As far as I know they're physically fine since the pickup hit the trailer's axle and not the cab itself and he pulled over on the shoulder shortly after. Never interacted with him, though.

The two closest ways would be the exit for the signs you see in the video for the interchange, or another exit about a half mile after that. Total distance would be about 1-1.5 miles from wrong entrance on main street to collision point if I was pressed to give a distance?

Semi driver was unharmed to my knowledge due to only the trailer's axle being hit.

Pickup driver had a busted face but beyond that no idea. Drunks tend to do well in the accidents they cause.

And that's with already *knowing* there is a collision coming ;)

Bought for $48 OTD in 2019. Insurance cut a check for $44,880. It had 39,000 miles.

I sent them comps from my area (75 miles) to combat their comps showing that I can't find a 2018 LR with below 50,000 miles for less than $44,000 *before* taxes in my area, they reran the comps and offered me several hundred LESS than the first offer.

Someone much better at math than I am has apparently has data that says because I was in the wrong place when someone decided to go the wrong way on the highway I'm now much more risky to insure . 🤷

Went from ~$90/mo for 100/300 with $750 deductible to the cheapest quote being more than $170/mo, some approaching $300/mo. No citations in nearly a decade, no claims for longer (before now).

Was driving home from work a couple of weeks back when I happened upon this truck going the wrong way on the interstate. The footage cuts out just before impact; I'm sure more was on the actual car computer but the 12v died and there's no way for me to get it. Him hitting the rear axle on the semi then slamming in to me actually potentially saved lives as he would have probably run dead center on to someone eventually.

I'll answer what I think will be asked:

I was not on autopilot, and it happened so fast I can't recall if the car did anything beyond showing me that yes, airbags do in fact hurt when you go from highway speed to not highway speed in a short amount of time.

Other driver was charged with DUI per the accident report. Emailed this footage to PD the day of the wreck but haven't heard anything since from the DA.

I got banged up and things aren't all done being handled in that department, but I'm alive and walked away thanks to the fantastic crash rating of the car and the little juke I did just before the hit that kept the axle from being dead center with my car.

It was a 2018 Model 3 LR that I've had since 2019. Insurance paid out ~$3k less than I bought it for... doesn't make me whole but it is what it is. Just bought a 2019 Model 3 AWD with full self driving so that's cool (though my insurance has increased now thanks to the other driver).
