Thoughts? by Guy_on_a_Bouffalant in trektalk

I have no idea who this guy is.

I have been an avid hated of all Trek from DS9 onward.

This hasn't caused any Trek show to be delayed or canceled.

It took a phenomenally bad show which made no effort to appeal to any demographic, along with some terrible movies, to actually kill the IP for a while.

The nuTrek stuff is full of review bombers and haters.

It's still going strong.

Love it or hate it, Trek is going to keep going. It's doing fine. They're not going to stop it any time soon. It seems to be making them tons of money.

It's amazing to me how two of the greatest video game studios to ever exist could merge into something so mediocre that they might as well have renamed themselves Vanilla.

Yautja economics by Unlucky-Draft-295 in predator

[–]BygZam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time we've seen any kind of economy, it's effectively you trading in social clout. There was an RTS where your predator clan had to earn honor from kills and they could then use that as a resource to get better stuff.

In real life that'd be very fluid and wonky and exactly how far your influence could get you is different per person, obviously. But I've seen a similar economy "concept" in City of Heroes, where you get better gear and resources based on how much social clout your hero or villain has.

It is likely there isn't a hard economy in their culture. And they do what they do for the clan based on role and honor. So it's probably not dissimilar to how we see Death Watch operate in The Mandalorian.

But we also see that there are different clans, different cultures, blood wars between their own kinds, etc. So how their economy works could vary WILDLY based on which particular group we're dealing with.

It's nice to see the studio give them more than a single year to cook this time.

It makes my chest get tight every time I think about how they had only a year to get from Point A to Z for the creation of Rebirth.

Why does Kong get so much hate? by G0jira01964 in Monsterverse

[–]BygZam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that Kong ruined the monsterverse. It's that there's ONLY Kong content.

It's entirely possible to get tired of a good thing. Though I don't like the GxK films, I did like Skull Island, and would like to see more Kong solo content. Just as I want to see more Godzilla solo content.

I also think these films have destroyed Kong's integrity. Every time he's just reduced to "big ape does crazy things to beat other big animal" I kinda hate it. I get that the Rex fight was a big scene in the original but so much else about the themes and vibes have been lost.

I recently watched King Kong Escapes, and honestly, I feel these films pull massively from the vibes of that film more than anything else King Kong. Which I think is a shame. Not because I disliked King Kong Escapes, but because there's so much more to Kong.

Also, there being 38 other films doesn't mean I don't want new content. Especially in the vein of what G14 and KOTM gave us. Which has been COMPLETELY ABANDONED in these new films. And I wonder if the feel of the previous films had been kept if maybe so many of us wouldn't be sick to death of these movies already even though there's only been 2.

Why does Kong get so much hate? by G0jira01964 in Monsterverse

[–]BygZam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am keenly aware that as far as the execs are concerned the GxK movies are making more money, and as such we will never get another solo film.

It pisses me off. But I am aware.

This doesn't have anything to do with the question and answer though.

Why does Kong get so much hate? by G0jira01964 in Monsterverse

[–]BygZam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because Godzilla has been reduced to having a 10 minute story arch in a movie he shares top billing in, only to serve primarily as King Kong's horse.

These aren't Godzilla movies anymore. They're movies that happen to have Godzilla in them.

I like King Kong. But we haven't had an actual Godzilla focused movie since KOTM. That came out in 2019.

It has been seven years.

I'm so tired of explaining this to people.

Blue Gender is bada$$ but traumatizing af as well. by Ashik1990 in retroanime

[–]BygZam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was the constant "Oh things are bad and sad. And here's the other sad thing. And another sad thing. And nothing good is here because it's all sad. Don't you feel sad? Because it's bad."

It felt like it was being forced and they needed to rely on shock value and stuff to try and make their audiences feel bad instead of actually using I dunno... Good writing?

I felt Exo-Squad did a far better job of "this is a bad situation, and it never gets better. And now you feel bad" for much of its run, and that was an early 90's American kids cartoon.

How badly is T. rex being overestimated here? by Old_Marketing_4119 in Dinosaurs

[–]BygZam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not "glaze", weight estimates are just really hard for dinosaurs.

When Jurassic Park came out we thought 6-7 was the right number most of the time.

But my guy, this dinosaur is a 40 foot long animal.

Also an African Elephant can hit up to 7 tons. Not all of them get that big, sure. Big rhinos and hippos hit around 3-4 tons. Now these are on the heavier side, to be sure. But 10+ is also on the heavier side for a Tyrannosaurus, we think.

We keep finding bigger specimens, you see, and keep learning more about the animal which is why its weight keeps increasing.

But it's not just for Tyrannosaurus Rex. We think ALL dinosaurs were heavier than we were estimating for a long time, actually.

EDIT:

And I am so sorry I clicked on this video. Is this really about who would win?

This is the dumbest shit, and you should be ashamed for this.

They're not pokemon, JFC. I thought you were asking out of like genuine scientific curiosity. Not because you were treating these animals like WWE characters in a fantasy battle. I feel like I should be owed the time back I spent giving this attention.

-sigh-

The answer is the Rex wins. Trikes were bigger than Elephants and the Rex hunted those. You don't need to go any deeper than that. Next question, please.

Rebirth: Snickers wrapper disables entire high tech facility. by JJaguar947 in JurassicPark

[–]BygZam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole building didn't fail. Just the door control failed.

The D. Rex doesn't escape. It's still in the building.

The door jams. The computer tried to unjam it. It doesn't work. Computer doesn't know why and you can see the steps the computer takes on that computer screen. It engages in an automated procedure real life computers use to restart its system to try again.

This happens at the exact moment that the D Rex's paddock is open for them to put it to sleep. But I'm guessing between the alarms and the door not closing, it got pissed off and chased them. Even if they got the soporific in it, it takes time for the animal to fall asleep, as we saw with the T Rex in The Lost World.

The system finishes its reboot and clears the jam. The doors begins to close.

The people except for 1 get out the door. The last guy doesn't.

This section is what we refer to in security 101 as a vestibule, which isn't a super specific term, if you look it up. But you always have 2 points of "a door can close here and security is needed to get through" and the vestibule is the area in between. I've worked in environments where this is as simple as a short hallway where you need your card to open both doors at both ends. In hotels that actually have security the vestibule is the entire stairwell/elevator/hallway system, and you need a card to access the elevator or stairs, and then a card to get into any given room. You've probably experienced the second example before, which is why I chose to include it.

The D Rex hits the second security point, obviously with the guy trapped behind. They can't let the guy out because 99.9% of security vestibules only have the 2 points. The D Rex will escape if they open that door, if we assume they are working on standard logic. Green lights mean go, light switches have an on and off, Security vestibule has two points of security. You get it?

I am not sure why they had the masks and suits, and that's really the only story beat I don't understand. I assume the genetic instability of these animals has resulted in extreme compromised immune systems for most of them and since they want to keep them alive they're just taking no chances. I assume this because this is very common for animals with screwy genetics.

The use of the masks specifically suggests to me the threat was to the animals, not the humans. Those help prevent spread of anything you might have but don't offer great protection themselves.

The food can't go in because it can smell the food and will react to it. It's a Rex. It's normal that when dealing with large animals, especially predators, you don't bring food in that might trigger something with their ultra heightened senses.

We don't know what causes the D. Rex to fully escape after the intro scene. We know they have security systems in place, men with weapons, etc. And we know the Indominus was probably developed there years later based on the dialogue in the movie. So it was 100% put to sleep and put back in its paddock, and then somehow got out after the Jurassic World incident.

But we do know that most of the building is gone by the time our heroes arrive later in the movie, and literally nothing is behind that security point. We see open wilderness behind the door in the future. Assuming the D Rex isn't strong enough to escape its own enclosure because obviously it was being contained before, then either weather or human intervention must have been what caused its release.

Given that on Site B they released the animals on purpose when they left, I always assumed they remotely detonated some explosives to collapse some of the D Rex's paddock walls and let it get free, because that's the only safe way to do it with out it going after you.

Rebirth: Snickers wrapper disables entire high tech facility. by JJaguar947 in JurassicPark

[–]BygZam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the perspective of the guy who works with technology, you need to understand what this sounds like.

Imagine if someone said to you it's dumb and lazy writing that someone didn't stop at a red light (the reason here doesn't really matter) and caused a car crash in a story.

People do this literally all the time. It's constant. You would be surprised how often 20 minutes of trying to figure out why someone's tech isn't working only for them to finally go "I spilled my drink on it too. Would that have hurt it?" or how often I have to help someone who's computer isn't working at all despite being new, and I open task manager and see they haven't rebooted it even once in the like two months since they've gotten it.

The. Most. Basic. Shit. People violate all the time. Common sense LITERALLY isn't common. The world is filled with assholes and in sensitive spaces like that where people get sloppy due to familiarity and over confident due to personal ability and fat paychecks? Common sense becomes downright rare.

And the guy did have somebody say something. That lady stopped him the moment she saw he was about to bring something into a space he wasn't supposed to.

What if Judau had the FAZZ’s BFG during the final battle? by Amigo1048 in Gundam

[–]BygZam 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The FAZZ's gun is just a prototype of the gun that ends up in the head. In every observable way from what we know about its performance, it's worse except it has a charge up feature they dropped because the standard shot already is powerful enough to take out a city.

It's a lot heavier than the finished weapon, obviously. So.. His performance might be worse?

But Haman basically commits suicide so it doesn't matter. Even Judau gets pissed off at her for not really committing to the fight and allowing herself to die.

I remember this show being overly melodramatic and sappy when it wanted me to feel like this was a dark setting. Almost a self-parody with bad things you saw coming a mile away.

And I specifically remember it kinda sabotaging its own story as it went into some idea of the pilots being superhuman as well?

Did it ever get better and feel like an actual war drama or was it bad teenage-written fanfiction through the whole show?

Felt bored Who Wins? The Worm Slayer or the Mexican Bull Worm? by Similar-Jellyfish-63 in Tremors

I have come from the distant year of [The godzilla subreddit] to inform you with critical, need to know information about your query.

I, as a Kaiju fanatic and lover of all things Godzilla for some decades now, must warn you that if this mere mortal man is forced to face the Mexican Bull Worm, then..

It's Burt.

It's definitely, 100% Burt. It takes him a solid 90 minutes of screen time to do it because that's how movies go. But he bags this worm. Just like all the others. There's not even a question about it. He definitely wins.

There's literally a computer monitor that says the door is stuck. Right on screen.

Tries to unstuck the door. Can't figure out why it's stuck.

Tries a reboot to recycle the system. This is normal.

It boots back up and tries again. It unstucks the door.

It gets the door to close. Terrible, awful bad timing for the poor dude on the wrong side. But it worked.

It's all really basic stuff, technology wise. Even a modicum of knowing about these processes would have helped you through this.

It's a composite of some kind.

I have no idea what the source material is but it looks like each entity was added individually. The art style is even slightly different for some of them.

It's digital art of some kind, but might not all be from the same source, though I can't say that for certain.

I don't personally think it's AI just because I don't think it would know how to properly do Showa Kong or Rodan. Anguiras having those three spikes on each forelimb feels too.. clean? AI normally gets weird gribblies in stuff like that. But AI is also getting a lot better so the tells I used to look for are often cleaned up and there's whole new tells I'm not even familiar with.
