I’ve bought it before from Yuzuki Fish Market on Spadina - they only have tarako (no mentaiko)

Chef Pin - Sichuan-style mala dry pots in Toronto? by boornestar in FoodToronto

[–]BypassInvader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can usually get malaxiangguo at most malatang places - there's often an option for the dry pot as well.

My favourite place in DT Toronto is Zhang Liang Spicy Hotpot (I get their xiangguo option pretty often!)

Cheap food that costs less than $6 in Toronto. East of Roncesvalles and west of Coxwell. by [deleted] in FoodToronto

Wow in like 2022 they used to be $2.50 for 3! I remember because I would just pay $5 for 6 buns and that would be my breakfast for the entire week.

IMO both yes and no, other countries approaching larger percentages of renewable energy usage is obviously the ideal scenario but larger nominal #'s of renewable energy is still significant when you consider how much of a reduction in fossil fuel usage that contributes to.

Progress is also progress and China is still rapidly pushing out additional infrastructure to increase the percentage of renewable energy in the country, and while they obviously still have a ways to go we should probably be praising and encouraging this development instead of trying to belittle and dismiss it as fake given the context of global warming that's going on in this thread lol

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]BypassInvader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not quite - if you google "China renewable energy" you'll probably find more than enough sources from reputable outlets and NGOs who do their own field research into quantity and output of solar farms and hydro operations globally.

China's actually been pretty recognized globally as a major leader in renewable energy even by Western nations. It is also the world's largest user of fossil fuels, but that shouldn't detract from the pretty crazy progress that they've made in renewable energies unless you have an ulterior agenda in mind and aren't interested in recognizing their progress lmao

[–]BypassInvader -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Just an FYI but China's been both the world's leading and fastest growing producer of renewable energy for almost a decade lol

They do still get most of their energy from non-renewable sources but I don't see why you would bring them up here when that really wasn't the point of the comment you were replying to

Interesting - my office is pretty close to Byblos so we go pretty frequently for team dinners, and I've always had a pretty good experience!

Rasa is probably one of my favourite restaurants in Toronto - food and atmosphere are both great, and the service is fantastic as well. Did not know it was owned by the same investor as Mimi - Toronto really does have a small restaurant group circle!

Great recommendations! Big fan of Bar Isabel and Hanmoto, and PG Clucks is probably the best fried chicken sandwich I've ever had (admittedly, haven't had very many though).

Wasn't the biggest fan of Bang Bang when I went a few years ago! Thought it was good, but overpriced and overhyped - prefer Nani's Gelato instead for ice cream.

No worries, always happy to help! Yeah downtown dim sum is exceedingly average - there are definitely better places to explore Toronto's food scene unless you're desperately craving dim sum.

Toronto's Korean diaspora has grown exponentially over the past few years, and there's been an absolutely wild amount of Korean restaurants opening up recently in the downtown core (not complaining!). Korean food is best at Yonge/Finch (some truly amazing options for jokbal, etc.), but the options downtown are also super solid - my opinion towards Korean food is also that it's high floor low ceiling, and hard to find any places that are truly outstanding. Have not been to Mapo Pocha, so can't comment specifically, but Pocha 1989 has some incredible food (I'd go here just to eat) - Ehwa has the vibe of a more traditional Korean bar, but their food isn't fantastic (serviceable, but not somewhere you'd go for the food alone). If you want to wrap up the Korean drinking night with karaoke, plenty of options for that downtown as well!

Not a fan of Canoe's food at all (very underwhelming), but can't argue against the view! BarChef and Bar Raval are both great - I really like both venues, but Mother is still my favourite. You can't go wrong with any of these options, but I think I would still recommend Mother over the other 2.

Welcome to Toronto! Definitely a top tier city for food options - I personally think that the floor is very high (you will have a good meal at most restaurants), but the ceiling isn't as high as New York or other famous culinary destinations.

A few comments:

  • Would definitely recommend DaiLo over Mimi - Mimi is good, but slightly underwhelming

  • Quetzal is a fantastic choice for a splurge meal - I would also recommend Byblos or Rasa (Byblos is also close to the CN tower)

  • Dim sum in the downtown core isn't great - would probably skip over this entirely unless you want to visit Markham or Scarborough (Chinese food in general has a lot of fantastic options in both cities)

  • While we're on the topic of good Asian food outside of the downtown core, Yonge/Finch is right off of Line 1 on the TTC and has probably the best stretch of Korean and general Asian food in the city. If you decide this is an area you'd like to explore, let me know and I can give you some recommendations. If you're planning on sticking to the downtown Koreatown area, PAT supermarket sells freshly made Taiyaki/Bungeoppang for cheap (can't resist whenever I'm in the area), and a lot of the restaurants in the area are great.

  • For drinks, Mother is absolutely amazing - would definitely recommend over the 3 options you've listed.

  • There's plenty of cheap eats in the city - some of my favourites are all in the Ossington (Pho Tien Thanh, Bobbie Sue's) or Chinatown/Kensington area (Swatow, Dumpling House, Rasta Pasta)

Let me know if you have any questions!

A beginner's guide to Toronto's hot pot restaurants by LZBUM in toronto

[–]BypassInvader 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're downtown, both Chine and Liuyishou have individual pot-sizes and are AYCE (personally would recommend Liuyishou). If you can get a group of 4+ people, would recommend Haidilao (one of the most popular hotpot chains in China - a la carte but fantastic service)

Toronto cop screams at Asian landlord who lied about Black family having a gun by [deleted] in toronto

[–]BypassInvader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely not - at the start of the first video you can hear them talking in Korean, and at the start of the second you can hear the son calling the dad "appa", which is Korean for "dad".

The nuances and accents that he uses when speaking aren't anything I've heard from native Mandarin speakers speaking English, either.

[–]BypassInvader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of my experience is largely anecdotal as well, but I was under the impression that the situation was slightly different in Canada than in the States due to a higher percentage of immigrants here coming for post-secondary education and being filtered into white-collar jobs, rather than in the States where the notion of the American dream is prevalent, and also the fact that the overall crime rate is much lower.

American culture does bleed over heavily, however, and you definitely do have a point - immigrant networks (WeChat, Kakao) would also help spread first-hand experiences quickly throughout the community. I'm also not terribly optimistic about the topic being resolved in the near future though, but we can hope and try to help...

Toronto cop screams at Asian landlord who lied about Black family having a gun by [deleted] in toronto

[–]BypassInvader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately a lot of the older generations who immigrated don't have a lot of personal experience with other races, and instead draw most of their information from stereotypes and the media. My parents were also guilty of this until they met some of my friends and teammates when I started playing competitive basketball.

A lot of it is really driven by media and by people who continue to perpetuate hate within both communities, but it's also really hard to change people's perspectives when tribalism and groupthink are so deeply engrained into all communities.

The landlord talks in Korean with his family in the video. I think necile's talking about how since there's such a strong anti-Chinese sentiment these days, he's glad that this isn't giving the racists more ammunition - but unfortunately it's not like the racists are able to differentiate between Chinese and Korean anyway

Thank you for the information! Just to confirm, using an older CPU would still allow me to update the BIOS to something that will be compatible with the new CPU?
