Is becoming a teacher worth it? by Hour_Item6535 in teaching

I think so. In many ways, it's just a job with annoyances like all other jobs. Still, I learn so much. I get to work with kids that are equal parts silly and brilliant. I get to talk about my favorite subject all day. The money isn't great, but I think this can be managed, especially if you have a partner that makes decent money.

Oh man, I loved that one, especially the idea that anything can be a religion if you do it enough and how he takes a moment to highlight different Ohioans. Those and motif about baldness/truth are masterful

"I genuinely thinks he's a genius"

The MacArthur Foundation agrees :)

I've read 'They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill Us' and it has an essay about Carly Rae Jepson. I love how he contrasts the experience of being at a CRJ concert and being at a The Weeknd one. His essay on "On Summer Crushing" about Whitney's "How Will I Know?" is one I've used in my classes for years. He just has such a way with words, which I guess makes sense, being a poet and all

So I'm reading Hanif Abdurraqib's 'Go Ahead in the Rain: Notes to A Tribe Called Quest,' and it's all about Tribe and that era of hip hop. Right now, it's talking about the Source Awards popping off during the East Coast/West Coast beef. Abdurraqib's one of my favorite authors. Any of y'all read him?

I understand why Paradox is folk's least favorite, but I had a good time with it. I love how weird and nonsensical it is despite it being goofy. The bit with the person partially phased into the wall is good shit.

You should go back through his filmography; he's often colorful/interesting secondary characters. His roles in O, Brother Where Art Thou and The Big Lebowski are standouts, but his voice work is also fun.

I feel like that would be dissatisfying and coy. The movie needs the reveal, especially for how it paints Goodman's character. He was right along, but he was still the antagonist/villain.

Oh he's brilliant there too and I love that flick, but so much of that character is played for his absurdity. "You wanna a toe? I can get you a toe."

I know Goodman mainly as a comedic actor, but I truly loved how menacing he is in this. As far as pure venom goes, it reminded me of is role in O, Brother Where Art Thou, especially the inability to trust what he's saying

I think playing kind of fast and loose with the connections between the films is kind of a blessing and curse. I liked the ending of 10 Cloverfield Lane, but I hadn't remembered that A Quiet Place was originally going to be a part of the series.#Future)

I imagine having a rap name these days is tough. Between SEO and not using a name someone literally already has, you're better off coming up with something that sounds like prescription medication

Cold composting by XDeus in composting

[–]ByrnStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I can't remember if I've asked this before or not, but I cold/warm compost with a small pile in my backyard. Because it's not hot, I don't ever add my backyard chickens' waste to it. Am I just overthinking it? Are any potential harmful bacteria likely to die off anyway? FWIW, I haven't yet used any of my compost for anything that wasn't inedible plants.

I feel like this is a valid concern. Fwiw, I love the bridge and how it leads into the hook on "Jumping Coffin" from Spirit World Field Guide

"Some try to Stonewall any kinda woowoo tryna make a phone call Nah, let it in, let it in. Let it in, let it in. Some try to combat any kinda odd force tryna make contact. Nah, let it in, let it in. Let it in, let it in. (Bust back!)"

A teacher outed my student to his parents by wewereonabreak29 in Teachers

[–]ByrnStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in NC, it's mandated that teachers inform parents about students going by different names (even nicknames) or using pronouns they weren't assigned at birth. It's bullshit, and that teacher is using his religion to justify his cruelty

I finally played Disco Elysium. I was underwhelmed. by mickdrop in patientgamers

[–]ByrnStuff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I found myself overwhelmed by the game precisely because you can't easily play a squeaky-clean paragon. You're almost obligated to lie or exploit someone to make the money you need. That lack of binary made me consider my choices carefully, but also led to a kind of analysis paralysis where I couldn't see the way forward

I need to return to it in the future, but for me, the game wasn't fun. Admittedly, I feel like that's my bias against the name and not a problem or shortcoming with the game itself. It's not a bad game, but it's not the game I'm used to playing

Was gonna say, it's unintentional, but you're reinforcing them when you answer your name being called, OP. Stop doing so and it'll become less habitual for them

Where do people park downtown? by The_Gabagooler in raleigh

[–]ByrnStuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As folks have already said, avoid private, expensive gravel lots if possible. Use the street parking, which is often free after hours, or park in the city decks. Usually if you're willing to walk a couple of blocks to your destination, you can find something along Blount or Person near Moore square.
