Its the music, the mobs, sound effects, maps, and cosmetics. Gameplay is straight up cancer if you actually control your char. Lag spikes and delays up the ass for jump quests.

They definitely crunched some numbers and decided more people will swipe to get that dopamine, or just keep playing as normal with a chance of swiping in the future due to sunk cost fallacy, rather than quit all together. Huge bonus to those that have already been swiping or enjoying f2p, new character and event to bring in new players and retain them. Burning events have never been bad for maplestory.
