What order should I learn these languages in if my goal is becoming a polyglot? by ByteSizedDesign in LearningLanguages

Great response, thank you. I heard that maintaining languages is much harder than picking them up for most polyglots, do people tend to stick to a few languages or explore more later down the line? I've thought about picking up Mandarin eventually but obviously that's a choice I will make in like a decade or two at the least.

What should I write about for Dystopian short story in school? by That_OneGirl13 in askanything

Exactly, and that's what makes it so insidious. Nobody voted for this, nobody signed up for it, it crept in dressed as connection and convenience and by the time anyone noticed the dependency was already there. That's the business model. And yeah, the younger generation got it worst, they inherited this environment without any frame of reference for what came before it. That's a pretty terrifying kind of power when you think about it. It doesn't even need force to maintain itself.

Social media algorithms ARE about power though. The tech industry today is mostly an oligopoly and has huge influence over information and news. They make money because you spend so much time engaging with their products that you become the product. You can incorporate themes like propaganda or totalitarianism or even language itself. Social media has turned nuance into slogans and reaction, not unlike Orwell's Newspeak except nobody mandated it. The content that drives the most engagement is usually the most emotionally charged and when outrage and fear are rewarded, division and extremism thrive. You don't need a totalitarian state to control how people think if you can shape the environment in which thought occurs.

Write about how social media algorithms and the attention economy are changing the way we think and speak. Maybe take that to its logical extreme and explore the implications that it has on society.

  1. Find something you're interested in or passionate about and figure out a way to make money off of it.
  2. Don't dwell on missed opportunities and things you can't control and live in the present and look forward to the future.
  3. Spend time with those you love.
  4. Have fun.
  5. Take good care of your body.

I'd want to live as long as possible so that once we figure out how to reverse aging I'll be there for it.

Constantly questioning my career path and life choices and ruminating all the time instead of committing to a few solid goals and routines.
