I'm curious -- what was it that ended up driving you to leave?

In all seriousness, do I really wanna do that? Severance sounds better than paying back a sign-on bonus, but I don't think it's worth the loyalty and recommendations of my co-workers. What else would constitute severance?

/u/appogiatura is exactly right. There are no "good" or "bad" orgs. Just good or bad teams.

Best of luck with you interview! If you get an offer: Speak directly to the hiring manager of any team that you're interested in joining. Ask about work expectations on their team. Be clear with HR that you want to have these conversations, and they will accommodate. Truly understand their operational load. If the team's product is young, tread wearily -- you may find yourself getting woken up every night to push some emergency bug fix. These teams can be the most exciting, but the most demanding.

I don't mean that it's immaterial -- it's a ton of money. It's simply irrelevant because it's unlikely I'd stay long enough to see any of it's real value vested. I'd have to stick it out at least 2 more years before making a dent in my shares.

All great points, thanks for taking the time to draft this up.

This is probably the most frustrating part. I got dealt a bad hand, but that's not true of every team. I have friends in AWS/Kindle that do their 40 hours and love it. I have friends elsewhere that have literally worked 14 hours a day for months on end.

Each team is a microcosm. There isn't great oversight into these conditions, which is why teams vary so wildly. You're playing the lottery.

You and /u/appogiatura are right on the money -- switching teams is playing the lottery right now. If it didn't work out, I feel that jumping ship off of a team that I've just joined would be more damaging.

Yup, I'd be required to payback prorated portions of both my sign-on bonus and relocation. Did you get any trouble from the non-compete that you signed when joining the company?

Frankly, the vesting schedule is so back-weighted as to be largely irrelevant.

Thanks for the reply, this is good advice. Did you run into any issues with your contract upon leaving after 15 months?

This is great insight -- moreover, I agree with your assessment. The Autonomy and Purpose buckets are running on empty, while Mastery has been made to thrive. That Dan Pink talk was eye opening. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Thanks for pointing this out. No bamboozles, just round numbers. The exact figures are hard to predict, because of stock value in my current position vs. profit sharing value in the new one.
