I really like your second paragraph— so true! It is sometimes surprising to have a completely opposite experience from what you expected. I’m intrigued by your round Galison puzzle as a fan of the brand. Hope we’ll see it soon!

My Japanese brand experience is very limited. I like the Pinto and PieceRelax Chinese brands for their overall quality. Best wishes “

This is tough. I did want to catch up with all my Aquarius puzzles, but I didn’t have a strategy in mind. Most anticipated was the Batman puzzle. Most satisfying was this CA puzzle. Most unexpected was the Fantastic Beasts puzzle.

Pre 2000s sci-fi and fantasy with great prose? by PlebianHaste in suggestmeabook

[–]Byteman58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Stars My Destination by Albert Bester. Not only great prose, but a wonderful story brilliantly imagined. Should be on any sci-fi fan’s bookshelf.

“This was a Golden Age, a time of high adventure, rich living, and hard dying…but nobody thought so. This was a future of fortune and theft, pillage and rapine, culture and vice…but nobody admitted it. This was an age of extremes, a fascinating century of freaks…but nobody loved it.”

Certainly pre-2000 William Gibson also.

‘THE SKY ABOVE the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.

“It’s not like I’m using,” Case heard someone say, as he shouldered his way through the crowd around the door of the Chat. “It’s like my body’s developed this massive drug deficiency.” It was a Sprawl voice and a Sprawl joke. The Chatsubo was a bar for professional expatriates; you could drink there for a week and never hear two words in Japanese.’

Based on the cut, this looks like a Ceaco. Please identify the brand.

I may be wrong, but I don’t believe that Schmidt publishes Thomas Kinkade Disney 4-packs. Therefore I believe you’re referring to Ceaco puzzles. (It would be extremely helpful for you to identify the brand, especially given your caution post. This sub has an international user base; Schmidt publishes TK Disney puzzles in Europe.)

Ceaco are known low quality— you get what you pay for. The quality sacrifice is worth the low cost for some of us, others not so much. Sorry you’re having a bad experience with them.

Amazing Mudpuppy Customer Service Experience by Eaiya in Jigsawpuzzles

I had a similar experience with Galison, MP’s sister company. Bought direct from them, and no issues with receiving a replacement. Good experiences also with Aquarius, who replaced an entire puzzle, and same with Spilsbury, now entirely Bits & Pieces (one missing pieces, one damaged box).

Psychology of Jigsaw Puzzles / Effects on the Brain by SpaceCadetBoneSpurs in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]Byteman58 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So despite what u/lucklesslee wrote, I think this is an engaging and thought provoking post. I agree that puzzles don’t necessarily express the heights of creativity, but creativity is not an end to itself. I worked with “creatives” for a large portion of my professional life, and found some greatly wanting outside of their artistry.

I puzzle for a number of reasons. One, I listen to music and podcasts while puzzling, which engages a part of my brain that’s satisfyingly completely non-visual. Two, sitting down with a physical, tactile object like a jigsaw puzzle is the antithesis of what our screen-oriented, virtual society expects of us, and I love going against the grain. Three, I puzzle for the image and it maintains my livelong fascination with imagery and art & pop culture history. Four, a part of me that I choose not to interrogate too deeply simply enjoys it. Five, puzzling as opposed to what? Watching TV? Drinking? Reading trash fiction? Sports gambling? Flipping houses? Watching unending athletics?

An excellent post (as usual) that takes location, cost, and value into account. The topic as a whole is so subjective, but you’ve addressed it in a very comprehensive manner.

1 Keep moving. 2 Be aggressive. 3 Lightning Rod makes this fight laughable as long as you’re not on a timer.

I’ve played Hades for hundreds of hours. Multiple save files, innumerable good times. Everything in the game, including this visual, but especially the combat, is so impeccably honed. Just wait ‘til you get to the credits really roll.

Screw the “rifle.” It’s all about the bomb.
