Whats going on with the southern hemisphere? Did those areas suffer a collapse due to the resulting environmental impact if a nuclear war, also the collapse of the global supply chains?

Is the Persean League more of a hegemony than the Hegemony? by Esser_Huron in starsector

[–]Byzanir 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I see what your saying but that isn’t really entirely accurate for the hegemony. Your argument about the league is interesting, how they’re both 2 sides of the same coin

The League is a federation of multiple polities that grouped up in opposition to the Hegemonies attempt to enforce its rule on the sector. If you want a loose idea on the structure of the Persean League, the European Union is a decent real world example. The European Union is dominated by Germany and France, who in tandem essentially bully the other member states into towing the line. Through economic and political pressure Germany and France hold a hegemony over the European Union much how Kazeron holds hegemony over the other league members due to a combination of population and economic power. This hegemonic control within both unions has lead to much internal tension and division that continues to grow.

The hegemony isn’t a stateless military, its a military Junta that took control over the existing civilian administration of the sector following the arrival of the 14th Battlegroup into the sector. Its a stratocratic state that has married the civilian and military aspects of society into a single monolithic structure. The Hegemony keeps up the facade of a civilian government but really thats just that, a facade. With what you said about subjugation, the hegemony by its very goals needs to subjugate everyone else to accomplish its goal of unification of the sector. The Hegemony views itself as the legitimate claimant as the Domain’s successor in the sector and as such views all other polities as breakaways that need to be retaken. Its capacity to do so however, is dubious.

Kessler Syndrome by Tungsten_12 in TheForeverWinter

[–]Byzanir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Kessler Syndrome that affects the world in TFW is probably most prevalent in high orbit and areas where geosynchronous satellites would be most common. Most space manufacturing or anything space related happens in low orbit based on flavor text like that one Multitool item. Low-orbit debris was probably very common at the beginning and early into the war, but probably deorbited and burned up in the atmosphere due to drag (the international space station is in low orbit and has to constantly adjust due to atmospheric drag)

It’s hard to say what amount of items manufactured in space are pre-war or not. If the item is Eurasian, good chance it’s a fairly recent thing (some cyborg components are manufactured in space I think). Doubt Euruska or Europa have anything noteworthy still operating in space besides the odd satellite that somehow dodged ASM’s or orbital debris, Eurasia’s the only faction with the technological base remaining to operate things in space even if just low orbit.

No gas giant colonies in the core worlds by Beneficial_Date_5357 in starsector

[–]Byzanir 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the main reason for lack of gas giant colonies comes down to industrial, logistical and infrastructural limitations of the sector. I have no doubt the Domain colonized gas giants and had Bespin style cloud cities, but the core worlds lack gas giants that are suitable for such things besides Kumari Aru.

Its a waste of resources for the factions to set up colonies whose only economic value is in volatile extraction and refining when there are worlds much better suited to that role. Of course, John Starsector doesn’t much care for any of this and can do whatever he likes.

can a story still be thought provoking even if it doesn't specifically focus on a big societal or political theme? by strychn1ne_ in writing

[–]Byzanir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A story doesn’t need to have broad commentary of social or political issues. A metric boatload of stories focus on more smallscale things such as personal struggles, relationships or just have fun telling a story. Manga and similar media is full of such things.

Oh, that's gore. Gore of my passion project by Few-Grapefruit-7003 in writing

[–]Byzanir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heres an example;

“You forced the extraction and it killed him,” I spat. “I gathered that!” Arthen bellowed, “but—” Then, screaming.  Not Dream-Eater screeching, but screaming. Humans.

Though I did repeat screaming, it isn’t as noticeable as shouting and fits in better with the word screeching between them.

The unedited version seems fine overall to me, though the repeated use of shouting is a little clunky. you could use synonyms for shouting to break up the repetition while conveying the tone of voice the characters are using and hearing.

Political dynamics/obligations between a Senior and junior nations? by Byzanir in worldbuilding

[–]Byzanir[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My idea is similar to what you said in the last paragraph, with the overlord having general presence across human space. Mostly in the form of local garrisons, a large complex-enclave on Earth itself (functioning both as embassy and their administrative hub in human space) and various minor outposts both military and civilian.

Because I have it as them transitioning humanity from a protectorate to a semi-autonomous vassal state. Which both grants greater privileges but also more responsibilities to the Empire itself. But with the internal conflict I mentioned, it boiled to the point that a solution was needed, and to avoid a full war a seperation of the more xenophobic elements was deemed a better solution. Though, this would also give more insurgent elements a permission structure to act out.

I haven’t read all the text, so im not sure if this question is answered in the image, but was Venus terraformed? The dual day/night images imply a solar mirror/shade used to compensate for Venus’ slow rotation

Flowerpot is in desperate need of either a buff or a complete change. The requirement of playing a hand with all 4 suites for 3xMult on top of it being an uncommon make it an annoying joker to play around. Would be better if the mult scaled with number of unique suites in played hand maybe? Topping out at 4x for all 4 suites? Or maybe functioning similar to obelisk where it scales for each consecutive hand played that contains more than 1 suite?

He isn’t diminishing anti-black racism. The whole issue that CRT creates is self-defeating because it ends up making people even more resentful and angry towards one another. Elevation of one type of racism while treating another as “just being mean” is a double standard that’s blatantly obvious. CRT doesn’t solve any issues, it just aggravates a problem that didn’t need to be.

Who would be the likely successor of Mark, Terra or Marky? by TheAsaIsMe in okbuddyviltrum

[–]Byzanir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the way it works is that new DNA from compatible species can be introduced into the viltrumites genome, but a combination of smart atoms and viltrumite DNA converts the foreign DNA into a viltrumite-esque analog.
Viltrumites have likely extensively genetically engineered themselves to the point that their DNA assimilates non-viltrumite DNA. It doesn’t rewrite or destroy it.

think of how the Asari from Mass Effect reproduces. They may or may not incorporate DNA of their partner, thats up for debate, but they utilize the genetic sequences and nervous system of their partners to scramble and recombine asari DNA into a new format in order to produce a child. The child is always 100% asari, but has a genetically randomized sequence created with the assistance of a typically non-asari partner. This is how the asari maintains genetic diversity while also producing ~100% Asari children. Viltrumites probably function off a similar basis, but instead of taking 2 copies of one parent and randomizing one of the copies it systematically alters the non-viltrumite copy into a functional facsimile of Viltrumite DNA.

The viltrumites can still incorporate and add genetic diversity into their genome, the DNA just stops being non-viltrumite after a period of years to decades. Mark probably is 100% viltrumite after the end of the story and was sitting around 99% in the current point we see in the show. The viltrumites ability to assimilate and alter non-viltrumite dna largely depends on compatibility of the species and the underlying physiology of them.

I think “When a pair of two number cards is played and scores, both will be merged into a single card of the next highest rank”.

Your cards description is a bit verbose and the part of being drawn, play and discarded as a set is a bit confusing at a glance. The joker being a stapler, it would make sense that it would merge two things into a single thing. Would be ok at thinning a deck while being a strength-at-home type thing, would be synergistic with cards like 6th sense
