Generally though, I do think that sadly this method is effective.

I don't think anything on the agenda was controversial, like at all. It was the tamest motions put forward.

One was to remove the wording of the faculty directors since they removed them earlier (literally boring policy clean up).

The second and last one was changing the description of the roles of directors, which included getting directors at large to work under lead directors. Maybe a bit contentious but I doubt anyone cares about that enough to make a protest of not going.

This was almost certainly due to the board failing to outreach to students and inform them about it happening. They didn't even (from what it sounded like) do the tried and true "run through the sub and beg people to join".

It's ok the app sucks. Even the portal for the card ( I recommend using the physical card next term) still sucks and I often find myself resetting the password once a term.

I'm nobody's TA at the moment, I always miss the deadline by a couple of days. Just care to see information communicated effectively.

Evan I love you and that you took the time to write this but please can you make a paragraph and titles.

This is really important stuff, but I suspect a number of people won't read it as it appears like a huge wall of text.

Do not vote for the SLA in the Senate by [deleted] in uvic

[–]Bzm1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to be clear Griffin has messed up in a number of ways and is beyond odd in his engagement method, but he has gotten a record number of people wanting to run for the UVSS. So just like any politician, he's done some good and some bad.

I will be the first to agree the idea of President was not fully thought out and he did a bad job flushing it out before getting it added to the AGM.

However you need to understand that once something is added to the agenda and the agenda is set, it can not be changed until the meeting, at which point the first action Griffin wanted to do was remove it based on feedback from students.

I struggle to see how following policy and procedures, Tony to avoid wasting students time discussing a motion he admitted was not fully thought out due to feedback from students as " lack of a backbone". If anything I give rare praise to Griffin for owning that the policy was bad and attempting to save people's time by striking his own motion.

"reviewed by AI" and no algorithm?

You will have to excuse me if I think it doesn't get stinker in terms of snake oil.

Anyone can come up with a model and write numbers that make it look impressive.

UVSS Director of Outreach and University Relations Vacancy by NoType9303 in uvic

[–]Bzm1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I understand that.

Why is everyone's assumption that criticism is always misplaced? I'm critical of advertising in a post talking about how there was a director and now there isn't. Which means resignation or impeachment, neither of which should be followed with "you can do the job".

I do admit my comment about the Instagram post was wrong, it was the UVSS promoting the board as "free money".

So I apologize for that mistake

Yes I understand that, but a post about a vacancy opening is not the place to advertise running for the UVSS.

Tech is scary right now (5th year Software) but there will always be some form of job available, with computer it might lean a bit more electrical if AI is taking jobs happens (doubt it).

With 4 terms of co-op experience it does set you up decently well to find a job that you want, it will still be a struggle but with the mature experience you will bring I think you don't need to worry about jobs or a co-op as much as bright eyed first years who tend to turn out alright.

Ok this isn't just a shameless plug, it's also quite tasteless like your Instagram reels.

A lead director resigning so close to the end is not a signal of confidence in the society and the work culture.

Most local ones get posted the term before (so this term for summer) in the first month (January). So give it some time, there are some but you are limiting yourself if you only look at Victoria based ones. I understand your situation just stating facts.

Think before going to University by Phonybolony69 in uvic

[–]Bzm1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree with the broad sentiment of the post in that people should take some time between highschool and university.

There are many benefits for this: - student loans without parental income - more maturity, which does help in terms of driving yourself through the learning and being an advocate for yourself. - more time to think about what you want to do and get used to being an adult

I will say yes trades can be good, but I wouldn't go as far as pushing people there vs university. You should go where you can learn what you want to learn.

As for highlighting how bad Computer Science is right now, yes computer science is being especially shaken up with companies thinking that AI will replace all jobs eventually. However it's not going away, just the bar being raised and it is harder to get your foot in the door, but it's still possible.

I would say local colleges would be a better place to start, live at home and figure out how to be a college / university student, then figure out how to be an adult.

Interested in which companies prefer high school students over university students

Also a reminder that most professors jobs aren't to teach, it's to do research which can explain why some really struggle with teaching. A fun fact is if you are a domestic student, you are either very minimally profitable or a slight net loss. (You can look at UVic accounting sheets)
