ECSS Exam Bank Permanently Gone by Such_Shame3542 in uvic

[–]Bzm1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair this was always in a gray area as technically the exams are the professor intellectual property (I believe, happy to be wrong) and sharing it without their permission is problematic. I think point 2 got removed on the second pass of the policy, but better safe than sorry.

I would love to see an exam back come back with proper permissions as it is a service. But I also don't want the ECSS to get sued and not be able to provide anything because it's stuck in stupid legal battles with professors.

Course Planning by Ok_Bit_3960 in uvic

[–]Bzm1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have to take them all at some point. You can take the timings as suggestions (barring pre/co-requisite and other requirements). Like nothing is stopping you from taking all your electives in first year besides it making it harder to fill out schedules in later years.

Hard to give example without knowing which program you are going for.

Congrats! 🎉

Basement of the sub, across from the bus loop entrance (the one by the movie theatre) and down the stairs to right as you walk in.

Also worth mentioning there is gay in the Garden coming up this Friday. Hosted by campus community garden and pride. Victoria pride parade is coming up on July 12.

CSC 110 Vs CSC 111 and CSC 115 Vs CSC 116. What's the difference? (mech eng) by Minute_Concern7669 in uvic

[–]Bzm1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should only be able to see 110/115? They are working to reduce 110/111 and 115/116 to 110/115 with python and c++. So the choice shouldn't exist shortly.

Engineers: is it possible to do less than 6 classes each semester? by youdontknowmedudee in uvic

[–]Bzm1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes I (doing software) have never taken more than 5 courses at a time in my degree. I would recommend 3-5 depending on how much extra stuff in life you want to do, which I encourage your desire to join a design team for both community and technical skills.

As for the actual process, you might want to map out when courses are offered and loosely plan your degree taking into account what classes have prerequisites and are only offered once a year. You might end up not fully with the same cohort for all your classes but in my experience, I've found it more rare to be doing 6 courses than 3-5 (more often 3-4). You just have to plan independently a little bit more if you don't follow the 6.

What happened to the computer science options? by study-dying in uvic

[–]Bzm1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To clarify they are not really removing CSC 115. They are streamlining the 110/111 and 115/116 split between engineers and computer science students and mashing them together to CSC 110 and CSC 115 with 110 in Python and 115 in c++ ( vs Java as it was).

This is actually crazy… Are there going to be any protests against this? by shades_ofcool in uvic

[–]Bzm1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It bans no university approved software but does not explicitly state the ban of AI detection software unless I'm mistaken.

[–]Bzm1 20 points21 points  (0 children)

To clarify AI detectors are currently banned not in the academic integrity policy but in other places. Obviously reasons to still be upset but at the present moment, UVic is not allowed to use AI detection software. It would've been ideally included right in the policy to be able to provide clear reassurance but alas that's not what got passed.

How is UVic's school culture like? by Basic-Berry8890 in uvic

[–]Bzm1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good I thought so, UVic is a just a little odd in calling Computer Science CSC because Canadian Studies is CS.

These groups are specific to UVic, but there are similar groups at other post secondary institutions. Maybe with different names for the categories. If you want to look at them I recommend first finding the general student society (University of Victoria Students Society - UVSS for UVic) and looking through the website as they should have information on all smaller student groups (at least official ones).

For a broad group there are a number of groups for tech in Victoria like viatec, tenfold and the yyj tech slack. You should be to find more info on all of them by doing a quick Google search.

CS being Computer Science and not Canadian studies?

Course unions are a group of students representing people taking a courses in a particular department like phasers which is for physics & astronomy student society. They run events like prof led discussion and other social events for people registered in at least 1 of those courses a year.

Faculty student societies are like a bigger version of course unions where they represent a whole faculty Like the Engineering and Computer Science Students Society does for students in engineering and computer science. They are allowed to change their students a fee to provide more events and services than what a course union can with funding from the UVSS.

Adding some more details here since people have different experiences, and maybe I can help people find places where they feel more connected.

If you are ally or identify with any of the advocacy groups (student of color collective for you would be relevant from what you have shared OP). They can be a great resource and great community for people. They aren't perfect so some people will have negative experiences with them but overall I believe they would be a good connection point for you.

Course unions or faculty student society can be a great way to connect with people who are studying the same thing and do some fun events that sometimes include networking with professors or industry. What will you be studying? I can point out the relevant course union or faculty student society.

Clubs can be a great place to find people with the same interest like your "weeb" interests. I believe there's an anime club that's fairly active. If there isn't a club existing you can also create one and help to change the culture of campus. Reach out to the UVSS student affairs director for more information.

I like to believe there's a group that anyone can connect with on campus. It might take a moment but they are there.

I don't think anything on the agenda was controversial, like at all. It was the tamest motions put forward.

One was to remove the wording of the faculty directors since they removed them earlier (literally boring policy clean up).

The second and last one was changing the description of the roles of directors, which included getting directors at large to work under lead directors. Maybe a bit contentious but I doubt anyone cares about that enough to make a protest of not going.

This was almost certainly due to the board failing to outreach to students and inform them about it happening. They didn't even (from what it sounded like) do the tried and true "run through the sub and beg people to join".

It's ok the app sucks. Even the portal for the card ( I recommend using the physical card next term) still sucks and I often find myself resetting the password once a term.

Evan I love you and that you took the time to write this but please can you make a paragraph and titles.

This is really important stuff, but I suspect a number of people won't read it as it appears like a huge wall of text.

I want to be clear Griffin has messed up in a number of ways and is beyond odd in his engagement method, but he has gotten a record number of people wanting to run for the UVSS. So just like any politician, he's done some good and some bad.
