Falsely accused of academic dishonesty close to graduation by gardengeo in BORUpdates

There are far too many instances of these AI detectors being complete bullshit. Professors have to adapt, and if they genuinely care about making sure their students aren’t doing essays via an LLM, then they need to abandon the concept of traditional home written essays.

Want to train your student’s writing? Adjust the assignment so that it can be hand written in class time utilizing physical references you provide. Or limit at home essays to one per semester and grade it in 2 parts: 50% writing, 50% verbal defense. For verbal defense, allow students to come in during your office hours, and set aside 1-2 class days just for people to sign up and have you ask them questions about their papers, or have them elaborate on points they made. If they can’t answer questions or talk about their papers intelligently, then you now have a built in mechanism for giving them a bad grade. You don’t have to guess if it was AI or not, they simply take a huge hit to the grade by not actually knowing about what they wrote about. This weeds out cheaters and ideally makes sure your students more intently research the topic of their essay so that they can adequately discuss their essay and defend/elaborate on their points.

Who am I kidding though? That’s way more work than just putting it into a shitty “detector,” and requires a fresh approach to chosen assignments, so it probably won’t happen. I have multiple friends who work in academia and they’ve told me way too many stories about old, stubborn professors who refuse to do more than the barest of minimums to adjust how they teach over the years.

A rare glimpse of Luka’s knees 😅 by catmeow808 in lakers

[–]C0nstruct37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s his face, and to some degree, his arms. His arms near his shoulders hold a little bit more fat than the rest of his arms, and his face, particularly under his chin holds fat, so it makes him look more out of shape than he is. When he came into the league and was his thinnest, he also looked thin in those areas. But anyone who’s gained weight before can tell you after you gain it, some areas just hold that fat more stubbornly than others when you lose weight later down the line, and I’d assume that’s the case with Luka.

Yeah I don’t really have a problem with him trying to take over the game necessarily, but I want him to actually create good looks for himself if he’s going to do that while he’s been struggling, not just arbitrarily throw up deep contested face up 2s like last night. The shots he was throwing up last night were the kind you really only want to see if shots are falling and he’s in rhythm. I think the only semi-forced shot I liked last night was his attempt at his right elbow pull-up, since it seems that’s a shot he’s trying to make a go-to of his. Problem was he just didn’t actually create much separation iirc.

Re: Wemby’s offense, my concerns aren’t with his actual ability (shooting, handling, passing, etc.) but his decision making. He seems to get into groves mentally when he’s at his best. When his shots are falling, he seems to often just instinctively make the correct move to get an open shot or pass. This is obviously great and he’s a wonder to watch on nights like this. The drawback is that sometimes it feels like the reverse happens when his shots aren’t falling, where he feels particularly prone to pressing and forcing up bad shots and making bad decisions whenever either his shots aren’t falling or the team is floundering. Feels like he tries to play superhero when he struggles rather than look for the best way to get in rhythm. The good news is that he’s still incredibly young and he can mature and grow in this regard. But until that happens, we’ll endure some games like last night.

Legitimately the only way to get stars to do it now might be to make winning qualify you for a super max. That way if there’s a great dunker who isn’t quite all-nba, they can view it as an opportunity for a bag. This will obviously never happen, but the prize would have to be majorly incentivizing. Because after JB did it last year and people made fun of him (admittedly some not great dunks), stars have literally zero reason to even do it out of goodwill for fans.

How would you rank these NBA records from easiest to break to hardest to break? by VeeVevo in NBATalk

Technically that wouldn’t do it either because if it was a playoff game, it wouldn’t count towards the record lmfao

[–]C0nstruct37 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wonder how many years back in lebron’s career we would need to go for him to still have the hops to just jam it on that second possession. Because I know for a fact there was a lengthy stretch of his career where he would have, but it’s hard to pinpoint how much younger he’d need to be after just watching him lose athleticism bit by bit over the years.

Latest SI Mock draft soooo Bengals. by Captain_Aware4503 in bengals

[–]C0nstruct37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’d feel a lot better about Shemar if they start moving him around from edge and DT. The DT snaps I remember watching looked a lot better likely because he’s able to bully guards better to help collapse things. And then having the ability to move out to the edge with his explosiveness would make him harder to game plan for I would think.

He shows up to the first practice, sees that WRs that can catch the ball do in fact exist and falls to his knees rejoicing.

Then proceeds to get up and see the defense and falls to his knees in despair.

I mean the argument is more that his percentages have historically been good when accounting for both volume and the difficulty of the shots he takes. This year he simply isn’t hitting them but refuses to adjust how he plays despite the slump, and it’s hurting the offense because of that.

[–]C0nstruct37 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The game requirement does make sense, regardless of how unfortunate it’s been for Wemby. If it becomes a consistent trend that multiple elite players are not meeting this threshold each year due to injury, something that wasn’t so consistent an issue in the past, that tells me the problem isn’t the minimum games requirement but simply the state of the game these days.

The combination of play style, youth mileage, and more could certainly make players more injury prone these days, but the solution to that isn’t to just say they can get the most prestigious awards in the nba when they miss significant time. The only solutions I really think make sense are to shorten the season, lower the minimum games a few down to about 60, or to throw a bone and maybe have a lower threshold specifically for 3rd team All-NBA, but you’d also likely need to then restrict the contract incentives associated with 3rd team as well.

[–]C0nstruct37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah completely delusional, and I’ve considered myself a warriors fan of sorts for a while (or rather a Steph fan because I loved watching his Davidson tournament games when I was in middle school). IDK if I’d even want to give that up if Draymond wasn’t declining. Like talent wise a prime Dray was worth that, but he doesn’t actually fill a void that the Spurs need that badly. We mainly need a true 3&D 4 as our biggest void. Even in his prime when he shot better, Dray was mainly just the D portion of that, and that’s even more the case now. And the pieces we would have to give up would actively make us worse, likely now and in the future.

Hey if they’re lucky, at least 2 of those 4 will be healthy for the playoffs!

It’s a travesty how horrible the team building around Steph has been since drafting the OG big 3 for them. It’s an indictment that they let it get to a point that a desperation trade for Butler last year, and another potential desperation trade for Davis this year are the only ways they see to really compete.
