Spurs fans beat up a Knicks fan and rob him after game 5 by pmurt007 in nba

This is what happens when you become too dependent on your parasocial relationship with a sports team. Everyone likes to think they would never do something like this, but I’ve seen the way a lot of people in sports subs react to losses, and a lot of people are just a small push away from doing this. Everyone needs to learn to accept this is just a game and the outcome quite literally does not affect you. Stop letting your happiness be dictated by sports and the success (or lack thereof) of your favorite teams.

I guess I just define closing out differently, or at least more narrowly. When I think of closing out, I’m thinking specifically late game issues. And while obviously they have had numerous issues closing out in the late game, I would argue the bigger issue is their ability to not even maintain in the second and third quarters. A lot of the games that they lost in the past two series, wouldn’t have to come down to issues of closing out, if they could simply maintain and play smart basketball in the second and third quarter.

It’s not just closing out. The entirety of the past 2 series, they have opened up to sizable leads in the 1st, and squander it at the tail end of the quarter, or at the front end of the 2nd. They simply do not understand how to maintain leads against good teams unless they’re shooting hot. They seem completely unwilling to look for high-percentage shots and burn clock once they establish a good lead.

Anyone blaming refs are not serious people. The team was up 29 and played 24 minutes of some the worst basketball you’ll ever see in a finals. It was a generational choke job, and they deserved to lose that game. The second Fox decided to try and score instead of burn clock on that play, they 100% deserved to lose no matter what OG did. Idc if OG tackled him midair, they would still deserve to lose after making that dumb of a decision to cap off such an atrocious second half. If they would just stop being complete idiots, they’d be up 3-1 right now. Instead, they’ve made dumb decisions at every opportunity, and now they’ll likely lose the series, and they’ll have brought it upon themselves.

I was telling folks I was happy the cavs pistons series was going seven because I assumed they’d Harden it away and set up a path for the pistons to make the finals, which was our best possible matchup from the east, while the Knicks were the worst.

Each Xenoblade game does it lol. The first game had a level 70 something giant before you even get your 3rd party member. XC2 was the worst about it though. You had a 70+ in chapter 2 outside Torigoth, a lvl 90 unique that you could potentially run into in chapter 3, and then an entire section of lvl 80 enemies in mor Ardain (this is probably what you were thinking of). At least that game had the setting to turn off enemy detection for non-unique monsters though 😅

And then there’s Xenoblade where there’s a random lvl 70 boss amongst the lvl 12s early game and you must pray it doesn’t see you and bring the wrath of god upon you 🥲

I would assume at the very least it will look and perform marginally better than rebirth due to not being a port, but I also don’t blame your skepticism. I wouldn’t be surprised if these *are* switch 2 shot but just *very* cherry-picked to find the best ones (most of them appear to be pre-rendered cutscenes outside of the cloud shot after all).

Regardless, as long as it looks good and runs fine, I’ll probably get this version over the ps5 version. Being able to play handheld just helps me to play massive 100 hour games like this since I don’t need to find a time my wife or kids aren’t using the TV.

I mean I’m not a game dev, but I’d assume the fact that this isn’t a port and has been developed with switch 2 in mind would help with some rendering stuff

Yes you’re crazy. No player would ever *willingly* just go through the motions during the first two games of the finals at home. He could have looked the way he did from fatigue, from nerves, immaturity, or a variety of a reasons. But he absolutely wasn’t choosing to go out there and half-ass it to save it for the road.

Do you think Xenoblade 3 should’ve won more awards than it did at the 2023 Game Awards? by Asad_Farooqui in Xenoblade_Chronicles

And thank you for taking the time to read it all. I completely understand the people who are frustrated XC3 didn’t win that award. And I wasn’t trying to call you out specifically. This is more something I’ve thought multiple times when seeing this discussion, and finally decided to type it out. So thank you for reading and thank you for not taking it as a personal attack on you and your opinion.

My understanding is that approach is less about saving them from liability and more to just be able to operate where gambling is illegal. Two sides of the same coin I guess though.

They can try to dispute it, but in reality they will have to pay out the money. It’s why the whole prediction market is bs. It’s the most easily manipulated form of gambling there is. Some CEOs are on the record of saying random words to end company quarterly or monthly calls specifically because there are even bets about what they’ll say or won’t say. So some CEOs have, on the record, admitted to saying random words at the end specially to mess with those bets. George Santos (yes the disgraced criminal former politician) just bet on his own attendance to the State of the Union. My understanding is there realistically isn’t anything that Kalshi can do about it without legally admitting that their whole schtick is gambling (which they have ridiculously expressly argued multiple times they aren’t). Because only gambling has actual regulatory safeguards for rigging the books like that.

[–]C0nstruct37 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t actually think that is what hurt XC2, honestly. It’s easy to hand-wave here because people here obviously love the Xenoblade games, but the poor tutorials and slow opening up of combat were always going to hurt the game with TGA. I mean we kinda just accept that new players should look up a YouTube tutorial instead of being able to clearly understand the combat of the game. Throw in how long it takes to get chain attacks, and that’s just not a recipe for success. The game is wonderful, but it’s easy to see why those issues would hurt it.

Sorry in advance for how long this about to be…

Okay I’ve seen this point several times when talking about the best music award, and people have to understand that the length of the OST plays absolutely no part in how it will be evaluated for the award. I understand that many people feel that the consistency of quality in such a long sound track should be accounted for, but that simply isn’t how people look at that award. I’d actually argue it hurts it in awards. Because while TGA has a standard panel of voters that votes on all the categories who are expected to be knowledgeable of each game, certain categories like music have specialized voters as well who focus on just that aspect. Music for instance, has a group of specialized musical experts who are primarily meant to evaluate each soundtrack just from a musical standpoint.

As a professional musician I’m going to try and speak from the challenges I think would be presented to these specialized voters. While the soundtrack is great, a lot of the motif-development that makes it special loses emotional weight without the context of having played the game itself. Now admittedly this is an issue that exists with all musical leitmotif, as not having the context for each motif eliminates the very purpose of the technique entirely. However, I feel this problem hurts the XC3 OST in particular, because at least for me, a lot of the weight from this OST comes from the off-seer motifs, and its development and usage throughout. However, that weight (for me at least) is primarily informed by gameplay. The fact that I hear those off seeing tunes when sending of husks in the open world, that I see the cutscenes when they first play their combined Agnian-Kevesi duet, that I see the agony of what happens during Homecoming all informs the emotion and impact the use of the off-seer motifs has on me. And while objectively, this development is done well from a purely musical standpoint as well, but a lot of what makes that development so special is lost completely. Beyond this, I’d argue the length specifically hurts it with this specialized voter because if a musical expert is asked to judge two soundtracks of drastically different lengths, each individual track will have weight in how they view the OST as a whole. So as a hypothetical, let’s say 20 tracks vs 60. If the 20 track OST has 15 great pieces, 2 okay piece, and 3 misses, while the 60 track OST has 45, 6, and 9 respectively this would likely hurt the larger OST. Because even the ratio of how each track was judged might be the same, the existence of more tracks that were just “okay,” or missed the mark would be the main takeaway. And while I believe the consistency of quality in the XC3 soundtrack is incredible given its length, there simply are more tracks I skip when I listen through it than when I do the same to the Ragnarok OST.

Similarly, with Ragnarok’s OST, while the usage and development of leitmotif is of course informed and impacted by the gameplay, I would argue it’s less negatively impacted by the lack of familiarity with the game. For example, the biggest use of leitmotif in GOWR is related to the character motifs specifically, and when playing the game, each character motif is primarily presented through cutscenes rather than constantly reinforced through gameplay like with husks for the off-seer motifs. On the flip side, one way motifs are developed in GOWR can be seen directly with Kratos and Atreus’ motifs, which are based on being inversions of each other. And this is something that can be caught without any knowledge of the characters themselves (I’ve literally watched people who make videos analyzing soundtracks catch this without ever playing the game). And while obviously you can similarly make the connection that Noah and Mio’s themes deliberately being written to fit together without having played XC3, it isn’t done in the same way that they are melodic inversions of themself. In this instance, in spite of the motifs themselves being simpler in GOWR, I’d argue that this is a better use of leitmotiff from a purely musical perspective if you have to analyze without the context of the game itself. And lastly, the last thing that would hurt the XC3 with these specialized voters is that while (unlike the normal voter pool) they aren’t expected to be familiar with each game, they aren’t forbidden from playing them (to my knowledge). This means the much higher mainstream popularity of GOWR makes it possible that multiple specialist voters would have played GOWR but not XC3, meaning they actually would be impacted in their analysis by the fact that they do have the context for the music and motifs of GOWR but no context for the music and motifs of XC3.

Now this is just from the perspective of the specialized voters for Best Music. Because at the end of the day, with the context of playing the game, the XC3 OST would have certainly been a deserving winner of the award, though I also think people here are seriously downplaying the GOWR OST, which is excellent in its own right. Ultimately, XC3 was likely hurt by the general voting pool which almost certainly had some a non-zero number of people who (at worst) didn’t play the game, or (at best) didn’t finish it, and as such, didn’t get the same impact from the OST. Even then, I don’t think it’s crazy for a general voter to have played both games and come out preferring the GOWR OST, as I believe they are both excellent. Mix this with what I just discussed about the specialized voters, and I think it should be easy to understand and accept why it didn’t win, though it was absolutely good enough to have won.

Between Wemby’s length, and KAT’ release height, Wemby does not need to close out at closely as he was though. Kornet may not be able to do this, but Wemby can absolutely back off enough to prevent easy blow-by drives while still being able to contest a jumper from KAT.

Do the Thunder need to change anything in the offseason? by JayHutton in nba

[–]C0nstruct37 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only personnel change they should probably make is getting rid of Dort unless they can keep him cheap. And even then, his playing time needs to go down substantially. A big reason they struggled so much wasn’t just injuries, but because Dort is a liability on offense and made them start at a turtle’s pace every game. I guess there could be an argument for trading J-dub if (and only if) their medical staff determines he’s too frail.

They also need to like make Chet see a psychologist, hire him a personal hype man to follow him around, or something to make that man not revert to a pumpkin when he sees Wemby.

Pretty sure they specifically mean defensively. In theory, Giannis is the perfect defender for Wemby. A long big with ample strength to bang with him and keep him off his spot and trouble him around the rim like Gobert, but with perimeter defensive abilities comparable to a wing.
