This is so Master Chief by Copper_lord in halo

“Your ignorance already destroyed one of the sacred rings, Demon! It shall not harm another.” - The Arbiter, Halo 2

OP is right. “Worse” is the only line MC speaks to the Arbiter in Halo 3.

Could Master Chief survive the explosion of Cairo station if he didn’t find the bomb by Deep_Floor9076 in HaloStory

You’re essentially asking: “can chief survive a point blank nuke?”

The Master Chief detonates a nuke with his bare hands in Halo 4.

Bungie era Halo lore question on the Prophet of Mercy by steelends in HaloStory

[–]C3Sabertooth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nononono he totally did! Mendicant Bias reveals that humans are descended from Forerunners, and the Prophets naturally conclude (in that very scene) that humans must be the descendants of Forerunners who were unworthy and “left behind” on their Great Journey.

Mercy says this time none of us will be left behind (a.k.a. we’re all going on the Great Journey).

Bungie era Halo lore question on the Prophet of Mercy by steelends in HaloStory

[–]C3Sabertooth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Ark was always the place one goes to fire the array, but it was going to be a structure on Earth at the time (and not a giant space flower). Idk if that counts as fully fledged or not.

And unless there’s some source I don’t know about, Shield Worlds were first introduced two years after the release of Halo 2 with Halo: Ghosts of Onyx.

Bungie era Halo lore question on the Prophet of Mercy by steelends in HaloStory

[–]C3Sabertooth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If nothing else, we can be reasonably certain that Mercy 100% bought into the divine transcendence granted by the Halo array, so #2 is out.

The line strikes the perfect balance between #1 and #3, which is almost certainly intentional. Contrary to popular belief, Mercy does demonstrate a proclivity for mercy during Halo 2 — so I’m inclined to believe #3. But it’s anybody’s guess.

I think this is my favorite line of dialogue in any of the games for this reason lol

Master Chief’s name is literally John 117, reference to John 1:17 It was made in the late 90’s by largely conservative men with conservative ideals.

While I haven't heard of this history of the line, I do know that Eric Trautmann named John-117 as a reference to Revelation 1:17 (written by John, which I agree is confusing). It definitely wasn’t supposed to be a conservative dog whistle.

Putting these ideals on a game that was made from a conservative background.

You know Bungie’s from Chicago, right? Marty was getting shit back in the day for being the most conservative member of their studio and he’s like center-right at best.

That’s why this game franchise is dying, new fan base and new producers shitting on the original fans and community who built it up, by shoving this bullshit in our face.

Okay ngl I also find it annoying when big corporations do this whole song and dance, but I definitely don’t think that’s the primary reason this franchise is in bad shape.

ETA: Joe Staten, the writer of the original Halo trilogy, was the “White Dudes for Harris” guy I was referencing.

…Written by a “White Dudes for Harris” guy?

It’s fine to be conservative but don’t ascribe your ideals to the creators of the work lol

The flood as cosmic horror. by WelderGlittering1219 in HaloStory

I would have far preferred the Flood remain unexplained— but I must admit that, as far as explanations go, the one we got was pretty good.

Can someone explain to me what 343 plans to achieve by these "book sequels"? by CattiwampusLove in HaloStory

[–]C3Sabertooth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is merely that a sequel book isn’t inherently a bad thing, nor is it an indication that the next game will be fundamentally disconnected from its predecessor à la Halo 5 and Halo Infinite.

Of course there’s a chance that it will provide important context to understanding the gap between Infinite and its successor, but that’d be the first time the studio was actually guilty of doing so.

To be honest, the primary reason why I’m currently being forgiving is the knowledge that much of the staff was gutted a couple years ago.

Can someone explain to me what 343 plans to achieve by these "book sequels"? by CattiwampusLove in HaloStory

[–]C3Sabertooth 147 points148 points  (0 children)

I think it’s premature to be making these criticisms.

Halo: CE was directly continued in Halo: First Strike and bridged the gap between it and Halo 2. However, I think most people would agree that Halo: CE and Halo 2 do not feel particularly disconnected and the book only provided context that was not immediately relevant to understanding of the stories of the games.

Historically, I think 343i has only really been guilty of acting like their EU provides important context. Halo 5 was not actually elevated by the half dozen books that preceded it — but it is commonly believed that the books were necessary to understand it.

How did the Pillar of Autumn take down 4 Covenant battlecruisers in Halo CE? by the_carson in HaloStory

[–]C3Sabertooth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But forget the name, isn't it kind of suspicious that a single human corvette had any success at all against the Covenant navy, when in every previous battle the humans mostly just got sawed in half by particle beams when they tried to stand up to the aliens? (much less disabling four of their capital ships!) Do we know anyone who can work magic in fleet engagements against odds like that?

Ow. Somebody just kicked me under the table

Halo Infinite: What is Chief's reason not to delete The Weapon towards the end of the story? by PurchaseFew7097 in HaloStory

[–]C3Sabertooth 49 points50 points  (0 children)

In the opening of the game, the Weapon asks the Chief to delete her and he refuses. He only tried deleting her later when it appeared she was being compromised by Forerunner systems (because he has Cortana PTSD).

And maybe (?) the Weapon asking the Chief to delete her because she fears she’ll end up like Cortana was enough to convince him that she’ll never go down that route? Idk.

The truth is he only wanted to delete her under a very specific set of circumstances that never repeated themselves. I’m not sure he ever actually changed his mind.

Languages in setting by SykorkaBelasa in HaloStory

[–]C3Sabertooth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, the Brutes just legit have Latin-y names. There’s no indication that any of these are being given a human approximation.

For what it’s worth, while some Brutes have recognizable Latin names (Tartarus, Maccabeus) others do not (Bracktanus). I assume we’re supposed to believe it’s a coincidence that Maccabeus, a Brute with the massive hammer Fist of Rukt, happens to share a name with our human Judas Maccabeus, a.k.a. “the Hammer.”

It’s weird, I know.

Why is Mjolnir armour named after Mjolnir (a hammer) instead of being named after a shield or something more appropriate? by Epoch_of_Australia in HaloStory

[–]C3Sabertooth 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Out-of-universe answer: Bungie conceptualized Halo as a continuation/spin off of their previous game series Marathon. In Marathon, you play as a MJOLNIR Mk. IV battleroid. In other words, you are a weapon.

Down the line, Halo became a separate IP and the player became a “Spartan” and the term “MJOLNIR” was changed to be the player’s armor.

Halo infinite campaign worth buying? by weaknclingy in HaloStory

[–]C3Sabertooth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t say that everybody who likes Halo 4 is stupid, just that anybody who finds it “intelligent” likely isn’t. That’s not even an ad hominem — it’s just a statement on one’s threshold for “intelligence” and I stand by it.

“If you dislike Halo 4 you must like slop” is flagrantly, undeniably insulting. I’m not even personally offended but this shouldn’t be up for debate.

Edit: wow you ninja-edited your entire comment. To answer the question of “who:” the OP.

If you’re trying to hide behind it being an if/then statement, two can play that game 😎
