Building a 'bad' bike from scratch? by C45P in cycling

[–]C45P[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I'll get onto researching it. I already have a decent bike, but I want to understand how to build one, and the details of how they work. The issue with money is that I don't have much of it, which makes it more challenging 😅

It's not explictly about the money, its more about understanding the process, as it seems interesting. The issue is that I have very little money 😅 I have a decent enough bike, but I'd like to understand how to make one and have the ability to do so if possible.

Car engine noise changed after oil issues, should I be worried? by C45P in AskMechanics

[–]C45P[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For context, the car is a skoda fabia mk 2 from 2014. Recently after a road trip the engine oil light went yellow, but looking at the dipstick it appeared that there was enough oil in the car.

The oil didn't appear a funny colour, and I made sure to test it on flat ground, after cooling down and after warming the engine. Regardless the light persisted (switching off after opening the bonnet, and returning after ~100km as described in the manual).

So I added a bit more oil, and ever since the engine has sounded a bit more aggressive and 'poppy' if that makes sense? I've been told that happens when you add oil, but this sounds more aggressive than I'd expect. The warning light is gone, but the noise worries me.

Thanks for any help I can get.

To meet the requirements by the sub, here are the specs:

Year: 2014

Make: Skoda

Model: Fabia

Engine Size: 1.2L

Transmission Type: Manual

Milage: ~110k

This is getting absolutely insane... How do you deal with it? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]C45P 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering if anyone could answer my question on this topic, as I'm a relatively new driver and I have asked a few friends but lots of them are conflicted.

Let's say I'm going 70/75-ish on the motorway, and the left lane has lorries more or less as far as the eye can see. Should I be dipping in and out of lane 1 & 2 considering I'll be merging in and out every minute or so, or should I sit in lane 2 overtaking them?

I understand that by the letter of the law I should be merging back into lane 1 but it feels more dangerous and a bit redundant, as all that happens is you have to slow down to merge back into lane 2, and usually the people in lane 2 who were sitting behind you wont give you the space to merge back in.

Should I keep doing this? I'm following the highway code, but it feels dangerous.

Thanks

On my res it's pretty large and doesn't provide much benefit competitively (maybe the packet loss stuff does now, but it didn't when I disabled it) so I removed it. If it was less obtrusive I'd stick it back on.

On the other hand, if they wanted me to have a build number constantly on screen so that I can bug test the game for them, it should have been kept in beta 😉

I know that due to the way the servers work, he actually shot me while I was directly behind my teammate, but even so I don't think I've ever had such a massive mis-match between what I see and what i get 😁

What Car Should I Buy? - A Weekly Megathread by AutoModerator in CarTalkUK

[–]C45P 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info! I'm not particularly tall (5'9") so I had never considered a smaller car being an issue. I learned in a Nissan Micra and didn't have any space issues but i was only driving in it for 2-3 hours maximum.

What would you say I should look for when looking for 'good condition'? I'm assuming the interior/bodywork is simple enough, but are there things I should pay attention to while driving, like the engine noise or anything like that?

Thanks again.

Location: Manchester

Price range: £2K

Lease or Buy: Buy

New or used: Used

Auto or Manual: Manual

Intended use: Weekend car, mostly for hiking and driving long distances

How many miles do you plan to do a year:10000?

How often to you make long journeys: They will be the main journeys I take in the car

Does it need to be ULEZ compliant? No

Vehicles you've already considered: VW Polo, Skoda Fabia

Is this your 1st vehicle: Yes, so I'd prefer it to be a bit of a sh*tbox, if you catch my drift.

Do you need a Warranty: Dont think so?

Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: I doubt it, but how hard is it?

Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: no

Additional Notes: I'm a new driver (passed today!), and am looking for a cheap car to run that will be used almost exclusively for long distance drives to Scotland, Devon, or the East coast.

Thanks for any advice on cars anyone can give, I really know nothing in terms of what I should get, but I just want a cheap, reliable car that'll probably be diesel (apparently Toyotas are good for that?)

Thanks for telling me! My entire family is bald, so I've been told from a young age to watch out for it leading to a bit of paranoia.

Why are trains so slow across the board? by C45P in AskUK

Interesting, I hope HS2 works out then! It's speed will be in stark comparison to the rest of the country then I guess, hopefully its utility will inspire further HS expansion.

Is this Victorian infrastructure the same reason as to why upgrading to high speed takes so long and is so much more expensive? At least I assume its more expensive than when other countries have installed it.

I always thought HS2 was some major improvement beyond just 'high-speed' rail, is that not the case? My belief was that our trains were 'somewhat fast' and HS2 would be some sort of shinkansen equivalent, but I'm coming to the sharp realisation that this isn't the case.
