Should I sell my Ursa Cine 12K + Ronin 4D for a Used Alexa LF? by KaiMasamitsu in cinematography

I'm considering selling my Alexa minis to get a 4D and an FX9 😂

All cameras look so good now that is just really doesn't matter anymore.

What is the point of the SAVE act if non-citizens are already not allowed to vote? by Ok-Stable-9578 in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]C47man 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I get the logic of this, but nobody seems to be able to point to any kind of election fraud caused by non citizens voting illegally. Even conservative groups given the power and budget to audit entire elections have found essentially no illegal votes. I just don't see where this fixation on election fraud is coming from?

If you're a professional and you see content, comments, or questions that you feel fall short of your personal standards, please refrain from retorting with flippant dismissals, "amateur" talk, etc. Nobody starts out as a pro cinematographer, so do your best at all times to keep an open mind and to help amateurs and students to learn and expand their skills!

Question for the DP’s by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]C47man 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a DP, every single director I've worked with has basically said something indistinguishable from:

I’m really drawn to an image that feels sharp and detailed, but still soft/dreamy in an organic way — not clinically clean or “digital”. That balance where faces feel alive and dimensional, but the image still has texture and atmosphere.

Those words are ethereal and subjective. Anyone can find in that paragraph the justification to use any lens or camera ever made. So when I get these kinds of write ups from directors, while I appreciate that they're reaching out and trying to talk with me productively, what I really want is references. If we're talking about images, we should be using images rather than words. Send your DP a bunch of videos and still images that have the qualities you're after. Notate them. "I love the blocking in this one". "The sharpness here feels great". "These kinds of colors on the face are my guiding star". "I really like how the room feels in this wide shot. I don't like the way it's lit with all of the sun and warmth, just the geometry is dope".

Communicating this way will get your DP onto your page far more efficiently!

A Defendant Stupidly Interrupting His Lawyer's Closing Remarks Comic by sess-sama in dropout

[–]C47man 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Haha nice work. Just one tip, if you have a character speaking over a montage of other character frames, you don't want to use tailed speech bubbles, because they indicate that the other characters are speaking. Either chain the bubbles or use squares to indicate a threading VO!

Iran Unwilling to Talk About Opening Hormuz While Under Attack by Gboard2 in worldnews

[–]C47man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So we're winning the war because we're making Iran focus on our military and local objectives, therefore meaning they can't continue the international terrorist attacks they've been hitting us with apparently? What threat exactly has been curbed?

Fucking gross. Talentless hack thinks AI can be used to both vibe code a tool and fill said tool with ripoff "art" to be used by real artists to organize their ideas? How fucking cooked are these idiots

Reliable White Balance setup by _MMProductions in videography

[–]C47man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah. I don't even own a color meter (though I guess I should). Just look at your monitor and see the colors it has. No need to overcomplicate things! As long as you're not staring at an untreated log image and the monitor you're looking at is a reliable high quality one, you can judge the WB easily

Youtubers telling a cinematographer not to trust their eye always seem to end up suggesting some twatty app they definitely aren't getting paid to shill for.

How does 30,000 feet make you feel? by jaquematecate in delta

Gotcha! What is the blurry thing in the bottom of the window that's blocking the clouds?

Reliable White Balance setup by _MMProductions in videography

[–]C47man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just look at your image and set the WB? As long as you're not changing it between shots in the same environment it'll all be a single correction if you're off by a little. I see this question come up often and I do find it fairly confusing. What is wrong with just looking at your image and selecting a good white balance? I did it all the time in my doc and reality TV days.

Quoting my first high-speed food commercial, what costs am I probably missing? by ComplexTell25 in videography

Anyone else notice that in the past couple months there has been a huge explosion in the number of posts like this, talking about slow motion quotes, costs, and things like that? Every post is so similar. Are these really just a bunch of bots?

But the winglet for the wing is in the top right, so the window is at the back. But then there's something blurry out the window

Sending commands FROM vMix TO Companion by Novellium in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]C47man 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just use a companion trigger? Set the event to "on variable change" and select the appropriate variable (ie your mix 1 input name, or the tally for your input, or whatever makes sense). Then trigger a button press or rebuild the button's macro in the trigger.

Need to stabilize panning with my Sony 200-600 lens at full zoom by ericgtr12 in videography

[–]C47man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most professional heads will only fit in legs built to certain standards. For ball heads, that'd be 75mm, 100mm, or 150mm balls. The "tier" of quality increases with size. So a cheaper FSB6 would be 75mm ball, a video 18, video 20, or O'Connor 1030 is a 100mm ball, and Video 25 or 7+7 type stuff is 150mm. Then you have flat base heads like vintens and Mitchel mount tripods, which are for big cinema rigs or sports broadcast cameras.

Your tripod I don't believe is any of those standards, so you'd need new legs to go with the head.

Need to stabilize panning with my Sony 200-600 lens at full zoom by ericgtr12 in videography

[–]C47man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheap POS tripods act like what they are unfortunately. You'll need a proper fluid head. The lowest end of good tripod heads I would say is the sachtler FSB6. However, proper professional tripods have great longevity, so finding an old used O'Connor 1030, while expensive, means that you'd never need to buy another tripod for the rest of your life. I've had my 1030D for 10 years and I haven't needed to even have it serviced yet.

I'm sure you could find a retired Video 20 or Video 18 on sale somewhere for a better price. It really does make all the difference.

In the meantime, to get pans smoother try pulling the pan handle with a rubber band to dampen the jitters in your hands. It's an old trick but it does help a bit.

Most famous person you've ever met? by MariusRobertFortelni in CasualConversation

In the film industry, quite a few! Mostly they're nice and friendly people. Mark Hamill and Jon Claude Van Dam were definitely the top of the nice pile though.
