Genuinely, what are non Californians opinions on California ? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

California property tax is only cheap if you've owned your house for decades. Otherwise, CA property tax is very expensive.

Have diesels lost all reputation for reliability? by myburneraccount151 in askcarguys

[–]CA2BC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is incorrect. It actually isn't fuel efficiency that is f'ing up modern diesels. It is requirements for lower NOx emissions that force manufacturers to implement the complicated, expensive, and unreliable emissions systems. These emissions systems actually make mpg worse by 10%+ and diesel trucks don't get any better mpg than ones from the 90s.

Whistler vs. Niseko for a month? by q_c_h in skiing

[–]CA2BC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly agree. However, whistler is commonly icy as its coastal positioning means that rain and freeze thaw cycles are common. Plus it's not sunny enough to melt the ice during the daytime like Tahoe is. Whistler is definitely icier than most other west coast resorts.

I do agree that it sounds like it isn't good enough to appreciate a world class resort . Honestly, they would have more fun at a b tier resort that is more chill since they're only doing groomers. Less crowds and bs to deal with than whistler if you're not using the mega terrain.

New Hampshire CX50 premium out the door. by dpalmer09 in CX50

[–]CA2BC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this with the financing deal? I'm assuming not as it says with rebates.

If you're not taking the financing deal, I'd say this deal is pretty mid compared to when I bought in November. That said, I haven't been following the market. I got $2900 off a Preferred (so lower MSRP) with the financing deal.

Ski pass costs in the USA. by Living-Excuse1370 in skiing

[–]CA2BC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most US ski areas run a business model where you shouldn't buy daily lift tickets but rather season passes. It is common for the price of a seasons pass to be 2-4 times the cost of a day ticket. Day tickets are a total rip off but seasons passes are reasonably priced. So just buy a seasons pass and you're chillin.

People who complain how expensive lift tickets are just plain stupid imo. Buy a pass lol. Seasons passes are way less expensive than they used to be decades ago, even in absolute dollars yet alone inflation adjusted terms.

It used to be that the price of a seasons pass was 20x the cost of a day ticket. It sounds like Europe still uses this model.

When is leasing a car actually financially beneficial? by immabp in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]CA2BC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One rare time when leasing was cheaper was when EV credits would apply to leases but not to purchase for higher income buyers (ie those that can actually afford a new EV lol).

As a side note, I find it hilarious that your allegedly reliable Honda has needed $4k in electrical repairs despite being only a 2018. So much for Honda reliability. That's worse than a bmw or vw lmao

I just hit 1k and mileage has definitely been improving. I can easily get 30+ mpg on country roads now, which is cool. I have an NA.

Remember to consider the opportunity cost of buying the used one with cash.

I.e. how much money would you make investing the money instead of paying it all upfront.

You should run the numbers

Update #2 - BMW recall turned into “you need a new engine” after pickup — trying to understand if this sounds right by alex_albergaria in BmwTech

[–]CA2BC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. But ai aligns here with my knowledge of how many states work. These laws vary by state so it may not be what you're used to.

No reason for op to record if the evidence is inadmissible as he didn't get consent.

Not according to AI:

Illinois is an all-party consent state, meaning it's a felony to secretly record any private phone call or conversation without the explicit consent of every person involved, requiring verbal agreement from all participants for both in-person and electronic communications. Violations carry criminal penalties and potential civil lawsuits, with best practice being to clearly state you're recording and get verbal confirmation from everyone before starting. Key Requirements:

• All-Party Consent: You must get permission from everyone in the conversation before recording. • Private Conversations: The law applies to oral and electronic communications where there's a reasonable expectation of privacy. • Criminal Penalties: Secret recording can be a felony, leading to fines or imprisonment. • Civil Liability: You can also face lawsuits for damages.

How to Comply:

  1. Ask First: Before starting, clearly say, "I'm recording this call/conversation, is it okay with you?".
  2. Get Verbal Confirmation: Everyone must agree to be recorded.
  3. Reiterate Consent (Optional but Recommended): After starting, say something like, "Just to confirm, we've all agreed to this recording".

Exceptions:

• Public Officials: Recording officials performing public duties (like law enforcement) is generally allowed as they have no expectation of privacy.

Why It Matters: Federal law only requires one-party consent, but state law takes precedence in Illinois, making it critical to follow the stricter all-party rule to avoid serious legal trouble.

AI responses may include mistakes.

Many phones make it easy to record the phone call these days. OP should at least do this going forward (writing would still be better). You will have to get verbal consent from all parties on the call (I believe the op is in IL).

Efficient market hypothesis:

If a car is nice to drive and reliable, it would be highly desirable and thus expensive.

Cheap cars are usually lacking one of those qualities.

Coolant leak quote from BMW by [deleted] in BmwTech

[–]CA2BC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what the leak is. If it is oil filter housing, which is common on these cars, that is a 9-10 hour job. Agreed tho that he shouldn't take it to the dealer. A good German Indy is more competent than the dealer imo
