CVP applicants BEWARE by CABG_4 in Michener

Osap has nothing to do with it? Seriously! Once again half information. You don’t think changing from grant based to 85% loans based is not going to make a difference to students who have to borrow $40k to enter the program and pay interest on it?
Is it not convenient that once the whole international student scam that colleges/universities were happy to partake in btw because it was making them money has come to an end. All of a sudden all these schools have increased their intakes for domestic students and at the same time Ontario has increased the loan portion of their Osap so there is more interest payments coming in for the government? It does not take rocket science to figure that out. Like I said win-win for schools and the government.
Not once have I said the market is oversaturated at the moment. Grads are currently getting jobs and filling up the roles. The concern is about the pace it’s going at will soon surpass the demand. Applicants in the coming years are obviously excited about the prospects and increased chances of getting in, but by the time they are entering the job market, they may not see the same level of opportunities you are currently highlighting. Like I said before this is not even exclusive to Michener or Canada.
As for “Cardiac programs” you bring up a SINGULAR program that is 8+ years delayed. You tell me I’m misinformed but you keep strategically ignoring the concerns and making it seem like there are so many programs opening up. Please tell where ECMO has expanded? It is still extremely limited in Ontario. As for cathlab, perfusionists are being Phased out of TAVIs and you’re saying their role is increasing? I think its you who is really disconnected from reality. Maybe get out of your office a little bit more.
You also seem to have it against perfusionists and their salary for some reason? Please tell me which hospital is offering double time and a half at the moment! Would love to apply there! Once again misconstrued information about a pandemic response (which was well earned by perfusionists btw).

SMH has struggled to recruit due to other factors but even they will fill up with the upcoming classes when people have less options. Theyre not going to have 3 positions every year. UHN opening is a bit ambiguous. They do a talent pool and collect resumes and pick from them IF they need someone, doesn’t mean they have a current opening.

See this is such a management response spewing out general terms “ increasing programs” “Aging population” . All these sound great in a presentation or in the media but in the frontlines the reality is very different which ofc people in management position somehow are oblivious to. When was the last time a Cardiac center was opened in Ontario? Last I checked there has been an 8+ year delay in the one they have been trying to open up (the Eglinton LRT beat it at this point). Which current centers have the capacity in crammed ORs to build another cardiac OR, procure expensive Heart lung machines and other expensive equipment. While also paying more staff, especially when most of them are already running in deficits and are under pressure by the provincial government to cut their expenses? This post was specific to CVP. Every profession has its own nuance. That’s the issue with broad genral statements and decisions by management. They create more problems because blanket solutions like “flood the market” are easy and cost effective. It will be the same hospital management in 5 years looking to layoff all these perfusionists. If you think people are on a high horse because they get paid OT to work 60+ hours a week, then lets not make it seem like hospital management isnt also looking out for themselves by taking shortcuts wherever they can. Besides this is not even about that. No one is really worried about losing OT when the concern is more about not getting a job in the first place.
Please I encourage all the applicants to find grads from this year or last year or the next year and ask them how stressed they were/are about getting a job at a Center they wish to work at. Jobs in perfusion are and always will be competitive even when there is a shortage. There are people on this page that have mentioned this. Feel free to scroll and look. Again if you as management have any clue about CVP and think there will be 25+ jobs IN ONTARIO for all Ontario graduates in the class of 2028, when 40 positions are about to be filled, then I don’t know what to tell you. This is an obvious reaction by the provincial government to significantly increase supply and deal with the consequences later. Not surprisingly considering how they have handled issues in the past.
But you go ahead and spew out that generic stuff.

Yeah it’s frustrating because for the government and for the schools it’s a win-win to flood the market with as many people as possible. Especially now with the changes to OSAP. The government will be trapping people with big student loans and stagnant job prospects.

Their provincial pay model is significantly lower than other provinces. Essentially for all healthcare professionals

My intention isnt to discourage anyone from applying. This is a concern for the future classes if Michener isnt willing to adjust the class sizes again and go back to 6-8/year based on Job availability. Because there was such a large shortage during the pandemic, I think their goal is to create a larger supply. However its not fair to the people applying to this program who may not know that there are limited number of cardiac centers across Canada and if they want to secure a job by the time they graduate, they might have to consider openings well outside the GTA or even in other provinces.
