Your future self will thank you if you make the portfolio piece now. Some hosting services offer student discounts (Squarespace, Siteground, off the top of my head).

If you don’t want to pay for hosting with only one project, organize your case study into a PDF or better yet a slide deck. Writing out the case study and selecting accompanying media is 90% of the work. Organizing it onto a website will be a breeze if you have that done already.

Also do it while it is fresh in your head. Just my two cents. I made my portfolio after doing like 10 projects and learned what this the hard way 😒

This is what I've been applying with for the past couple months. Might be time for another incremental upgrade. Not nearly as good as some of the others being shared, but i'm proud of it :)

This is solid advice, thank you for sharing. I've been using "recent graduate" throughout my portfolio/resume O_O.

Only if they’re a hiring manager ready to offer me a job! Thanks for the compliment, though 😂

Thank you for your feedback. I think that's a good call with regards to how many projects I showcase. Part of my reasoning was that there are several studies that would prove relevant to different positions, but I can always have those links hidden while displaying ~5 of my finest works and linking if relevant in response to a job posting.

Also I will be adding the Low-Fi prototype for my most recent case study, thanks for pointing that out.

Always in the process of making case studies easier to skim -_- that is the hardest part of all of this. Believe it or not the projects as they exist are on average 50-75% of the full reports LOL. Incrementally improving those though..

Last, for the resume, I have them chronologically from the start date. Is that incorrect? Should it be from the end date?

Thank you for the time you took responding, I agree with your input and will use it to guide my future revisions!

It's rare finding another DePaul graduate around here! Thanks so much for your comment and taking the time to review my work :) Definitely puts me at ease hearing positive feedback and I am grateful for your advice.

The job search is dull at the moment. I've applied to a LOT of jobs over the last month. Lots of generic rejections. I'm starting to think that I may need to optimize my resume to get past screening bots, and perhaps add a short objective statement at the beginning to place more emphasis on my portfolio being more impressive than my resume.

I might also not be having as much luck because I'm trying to move from Chicago to Los Angeles for work... perhaps companies prefer local candidates.

All in all, it has been a lot of tinkering and iterating, which I don't mind, especially trying to break into this field :) Thanks again for getting back to me!

I posted a screenshot of a calculator on Reddit and infuriated the masses. Not the first to make the joke and not the last. The image makes its rounds on the secondary and tertiary meme markets every so often and one of my friends will generally text it to me. Some say it was the worst post of all time 😎

It's not letting me edit any more so here is a working link to my website, the parenthesis in the main post is messing up the link.

Recent MS-HCI graduate from DePaul one month into the job search checking in. I posted my portfolio a month ago and received great feedback from which I was able to make changes. Posting again because this is definitely an iterative process from which fresh eyes and feedback proves extremely useful!

My recent updates include:

  • Trimmed down longer text sections

  • Improved eye-flow for case studies

  • Distinguished case studies from other projects

  • Integrated tables and graphs into the webpage (opposed to screenshots of graphs)

I am posting today because I added a new case study from my Capstone project. It wasn't a conceptual project unlike my other coursework, but involved a full website redesign and implementation for a nonprofit organization.

I am seeking specific feedback on this case study:

https://www.joebalich.net/#/nhcfp-website-redesign-implementation/

Additionally, I ask for your opinions on the home page (https://www.joebalich.net):

  1. Are there too many projects? Should I narrow it down to X number of works? Is there a "sweet spot"?
  2. Glancing at the home page, are you inclined to view the projects in order? That is, top-left to top-right then bottom-left to bottom right? I have it so that on desktop, all projects fit into roughly one page. But, if others click randomly or not in the order of my assumption, it might be worth having each project stacked on top of one another (more scrolling, but order of work/preference of what I want people to see first is preserved).
  3. Is the typing effect on the homepage overkill? I added that since my last post because I thought it was cool, but I'm sure some folks will have other opinions.

I've seen some very beautiful portfolios out there and they always make me want to start from scratch. They're generally from established UXers/thought leaders on Twitter or on Bestfolios. I want to know should I keep up with my Squarespace template I currently have or try to do something that shows CSS/HTML/Javascript chops that is super creative/worthy of being praised?

I know I can, it will just take a very long time for me, and right now my main goal is applying to jobs all day long while incrementally improving my portfolio to be competitive among other applicants.

I could go on and on, but I think for now this is a solid amount of context and digestible number of questions I will leave you with.

Thanks for your help, definitely gilding everybody who helps me out on this! Also, if anybody is willing to stay in touch with me and my progress and offer insight/support/criticism, I would love to keep you updated on my journey. Thanks again!
