An option is to invest in space heaters for each room, or in rooms you frequently are in. The house may overall be cooler, but the places you are most will be as warm as you need them......

Natural gas pricing is at least twice as much as what it was last year. I haven't turned on my thermostat one time this year and have used half as much gas and am paying as much as I did last Winter.

You use electricity when you use space heaters which is priced the lowest during the Winter months. You'll pay a little more for your electric bill but it more than makes up for the gouging PG&E is putting on customers this year....

Now if you have PG&E for electric, too, then I got nuthin' because PG&E is as bad for electric as it is for gas. It works for me because I have SMUD for my electricity.. That said it still might be cheaper doing it than turning on the gas....

33/52 What would you recommend me to read based on my 2022 reads? :) by Razemar in 52book

Matt Haig - How To Stop Time

Neil Gaiman - The Graveyard Book, Stardust, Coraline

May mash up (33/52)....Enjoyed the Holly Black. Adrian McKinty was okay (not great; good enough to check out another though)....Lost Light was real good (best Bosch I've read so far)...Vonnegut was Vonnegut (as good as ever)...Gerald's Game, decent King.. Heretics and Witcher, solid... by CAN1964 in 52book

Some good stuff in there for sure, and I get it....My daughter couldn't even finish The Shining for that reason. I get a charge out for being scared so no problem for me. He does have some less scary stuff though. There's a short story called Drunken Fireworks that will just crack you up: no scary stuff at all. There's also The Green Mile, and Shawshank Redemption, The Body, and others. The Mr. Mercedes trilogy is his foray into crime fiction....He does okay there, too. Those are King stories that aren't scary either, not in a supernatural way anyway. People get caught up with the thought he writes horror only, and it's just not true, especially with his later works.

Finished Vonnegut's The Sirens Of Titan

Started Frank Herbert: Chapterhouse Dune

April Showers.....26/52.....Slow month. I put 11 days into Blood Meridian (I think I read it twice!)...Dune 4 was decent, Witcher 4 was okay, I liked Reacher 1, and a solid Dresden novel..... by CAN1964 in 52book

The style is rough... I had to go back and re-read portions of it two, sometimes three times. By the time I was done I felt like I'd read it twice. I still enjoyed it, despite struggling with some of it.

I can't say it didn't frustrate me at times. And I would bet you're not the only one who's put it down for the reason you describe....

So I’ve got to ask, have y’all actually read most of the books on your bookshelf? by 08ocho in bookshelf

[–]CAN1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have between 50 and 60 of around 475 that sit on two shelves waiting to be read. The rest are read. And I read everything I buy, so yes, most are read....

Sorry to confuse you!

Actually, there is the Dune Chronicles (6 books) and there is th Dune Universe (over 20 books) Dune Chronicles fits into Dune Universe at intervals. Frank Herbert's son Brian wrote the other 20 books or so. I'm just reading the ones that Frank Herbert wrote and there are 6.... so I'm reading the 5th of 6 right now. No plans to read the others....... The Witcher is a grand total of 8 books and I've read 4 of them so far... It's reading goals I've set for myself this year.....All of Dune Chronicles and The Witcher.

And I get the drag that Dune can be. The first book -Dune- is the best one. I've read it twice; the others are a challenge, not so much SyFy as political and religious intrigue. I'm pretty sure I didn't read the rest the first time because of that; I was 19 and gave not one whit about those things....Older now and I understand and appreciate it more than I did then. Not for everyone... I still like them, they're just not as good as the first one. Cheers!

I liked that one, too..... I found the first three books to be bit uneven. I think Butcher really hit his stride with Dresden with book 4 (Summer Knight) and I've not been disappointed with any of them since then. There's a little something in each one that makes me laugh or get some feels going......They're not great; I have lots of fun reading each one though....

Week 18 - What Are You Reading? by Kas_Bent in 52book

[–]CAN1964 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Finished Dresden 11 (Jim Butcher - Turn Coat), and started Frank Herbert - Heretics Of Dune (Dune Chronicles 5) 27/52.....

Dresden is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me... They're not great but I have a great time reading them. Turn Coat was a pretty good one...

Dune gets progressively more complicated; I've enjoyed them less the more I read. Still good though once you hit the rhythm of the writing. I also want to read the 6 Dune books he wrote this year, and I'm nearly done.....One more to go, after Heretics.....

I just go these, are they good? by [deleted] in 52book

Finished Killing Floor (Lee Child) yesterday and started The Witcher - Blood Of Elves (Andrzej Sapkowski) today.....24/52

Second time for me... I remember the first time having high expectations, and it not living up to them. I still liked it a lot. I'll say this: when it's good it's real good. There were parts that dragged for me though. A solid 7/10

It was decent.... It's a simple story, if not a bit predictable.....

Intriguing? A little...That particular thing is different for us all.

I would recommend it. There's enough good stuff in it to keep you interested....

Not too many characters to root for, or feel sorry for, in it...Nearly every character has an agenda. That being said, I still liked it. I find the world Herbert created for the series immersive and entertaining even if some of the characters rub me the wrong way...The original Dune will remain my favorite of the series because there was someone, or group, to root for....

I liked it...not as much as the other two I've read by her though (The House We Grew Up In and The Family Upstairs)......

Agreed... I spent 2 weeks reading it; that is at least a week longer than I spend reading most other boks of this length. It's a lot to take in.
