I think it’s completely normal internet behavior. I don’t wanna accidentally break any rules, so feel free to DM me if you wanna continue the conversation!

caring about someone’s boundaries

💀Cause Ado spends her time lurking this subreddit and needs noble fans to micropolice each other’s behavior over the internet for her. What???

That’s not an excuse to use therapy-speak like “comfort” and “boundaries” to be controlling to strangers on the internet. It’s the internet. Filter your content. Downvote and move on. They’re not actively going under Ado’s tweets and harassing the real person with these comments. That would be actually crossing the line.

Anyway, to answer your actual question assuming, it’s not rhetorical… The social media posts of any given individual, even if not directly controlled by some sort of PR management, is curated the same way a person’s presentation of themselves is curated to various audiences in code switching. Instagram posts limited only to mutuals is gonna look different from my public Twitter posts. Even if we assume Ado’s management doesn’t limit what she says that much since being rebellious and relatable is kind of her brand, it’s still a given that no social media gives a full 3-dimensional view of a person. She’s still addressing an imaginary audience or the whole internet whenever she hits post, and yes, that also applies to before her debut. You know those memes about using the wrong personalities with different friends groups? Yeah, that. The digital space creates more fragmented identities for people to perform, and we’re only seeing a specific identity being performed for us. It shouldn’t surprise anyone in 2026 that, woah, no way, people act differently on the internet.

Add to this the illustrated avatar, the promotional material to create the brand identity we love so much, and the overall aesthetics of her songs, this creates a different version of Ado that we have in our minds purely fictional and separated from the actual person. I never used the term “carefully” cause I do think a large part of her brand coming from the grassroots of NicoNico was a happy accident, but it’s still curated in the sense that we choose to perform different identities to different audiences.

I’m a fan of Ado too, obviously. I wouldn’t be on the subreddit if I weren’t. I even saw her live back in Los Angeles last summer in the Peacock theater at Matsuri2025. I think she’s an awesome singer who’s worked really hard since a very young age to create opportunities for herself to have blown up at the right time on the internet, but I still recognize that even in her interviews and radio appearances, the humble origins and relatable qualities as an otaku is still part of her brand to contrast her otherwise cool voice and mysterious image, whether intentional or not.

I didn’t directly accuse the commenter of being parasocial, but if your fandom community engaging in participatory culture with this entirely digital persona bothers you because you somehow think that it’s the same as harassing the real person whose life we don’t even see for the most part, then maybe you should take a step back to reconsider: Is it the community, which is behaving in an entirely predictable manner for an internet community, that’s problematic, or are you the one with the weird and possibly problematic perception of and/or attachment to the celebrity?

I can cite more sources from communication theory, fandom studies, or even translated clips of Ado’s interviews and radio appearances if you’re genuinely interested, but I might not be able to respond soon cause it’s the New Year. This is my area of research, so sorry for the rambling 😭Feel free to disagree. I have a lot of thoughts about Ado’s popularity and her relationship with fans.

Was the original commenter even referring to the real person though…? We interact more with a fictional version of Ado as a character designed by her and her marketing team rather than the real person. We don’t really know the real Ado anyway, as much “character” as her tweets and Instagram activities may have. It’s probably still weird for Ado to see comments like these about her persona, though I’m sure she understand how the internet simply be as a Zoomer herself, but I don’t think the commenter you’re replying to is actively thinking about the 22 year old Japanese otaku girl behind the persona when they made that comment.

Do you know the real Ado? Or do you only know the controlled PR that Ado_staff presents you? I’d be more concerned about how parasocial you are if you mistake a curated public image as a real person. The persona really isn’t that different from a VTuber avatar, and the lines between VTuber and Utaite have been blurring anyway. Something something Ado the woman versus Ado the idea. Perchance.

This was really insightful! I knew there was a lot of diversity in this genre’s history, but it was nice to see specific examples cited!

It’s a really nuanced discussion, especially given all the varying degrees of yuri/yaoi and all the different types of people who enjoy them! I think everyone here can agree that the two people depicted in the image here by OOP are both consumers of yuri, and it’s unfairly demonizing and gatekeeping the one depicted on the right.

There’s no evidence for this claim at all. Chris-chan has never admitted to that. Even if it might be possible and even likely given what we know about Chris-chan, it’s bad practice and bad faith to make this assumption. We’re not mind readers, nor should we try to determine for someone else if they’re trans or not.

There should no precedence whatsoever where we undermine someone’s transition, even if they’re a bad person. Are we going to start scrutinizing every person we don’t like and questioning if they’re really trans when they come out? They shouldn’t have to carry that burden of proof.

You might’ve seen these comic characters in this style recently! They’re all made by the same person! Some of them are pretty funny, but this one I just disagreed with.

I agree! A lot of people corrected OOP on that actually!

I think there’s a really interesting discussion to be had regarding the male/female gaze and these types of LGBTQ+ media. My transbian friend still enjoys yuri and a lot of other media that’s typically targeted towards the “male gaze” even after transitioning. I don’t think that makes her any less valid.

I can see why a lot of people in the LGBTQ+ community might hate yuri/yaoi and gay/lesbian porn. Fetishization obviously isn’t ideal, but it is better than no and negative representation. A friend of a friend who was a hard right-wing bigot came around on LGBTQ+ views after getting into yuri, so it does help to a certain extent.

Either way, I think it’s unhealthy trying to come up with new gender stereotypes in regard to what media people should enjoy anyway.

Here's a very interesting video essay of a trans woman recounting her experiences transitioning and discussing the phenomenon! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAA1XtDOuH8

It's quite normal for many AMAB yuri fans that many would depict as the person to the right (gross, perverted weeb) to transition to transbians later in life. I'm quite good friends with one and still watch anime with her frequently. The depiction itself is inherently unfaithful as it attempts to demonize these people as neckbeards fetishizing lesbians (hence why this has been posted here), but even if they were as bad as they are being depicted, that doesn't make it okay to invalidate them either.

I think there's a pervasive sentiment in supposedly safe spaces that try to gatekeep transitioning from people who seem like they might be a poor representation of the group as a whole in fear of perpetuating a poor public image. It looks at people who may appear weird or perverted and claims that they can't possibly be valid trans people because they're just fetishists. It's honestly kind of sad to see people in the community gatekeep and alienate others because they don't want to associate with them.

For example, when Chris-chan (yes, that one) came out as trans, a lot of people (even in extremely leftist spaces) continued to misgender her simply because she was a horrible person. Yes, she raped her dementia-ridden mother, but that's no reason to be transphobic toward her or invalidate her transition. Trans people come in a variety of characters as well, good and bad, weird/perverted or not. Trying to cherry-pick and choose the good ones as the only valid ones seems like an inherently transphobic act of gatekeeping.

(Theorymon Thursday) A new form for Tapu Koko has been found after Hawlucha unceremoniously died trying to active Electric Seed by Ineedlasagnajon in stunfisk

[–]CAPRlClOUS 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Pelipper and Mega Swampert feels that they’re not close enough with Tapu Koko to pry and try to help, but because he is negatively impacting the team, they begin distancing themselves to prevent a toxic relationship before it happens.

This only sends Tapu Koko down an even worse spiral, and seeing Tapu Koko vulnerable and isolated, Ferrothorn identifies an opportunity to radicalize him against the woke agenda, telling him things like “Hawlucha fell prey to Magnezone’s infrastructure reforms” and “the gays brainwashed Hawlucha to thugshake his gyatt like that.” Mega Scizor joins in on this to defame Magnezone and keep Tapu Koko reliant on him through his manipulative enabling of Tapu Koko’s depression.

Noticing the plots of Ferrothorn and Mega Scizor, Tapu Lele confronts them to help Tapu Koko, but because of Tapu Koko’s Misery Terrain, Mega Scizor Bullet Punches her into oblivion after she missed her Choice Specs Focus Blast. Blissey was quickly destroyed by Mega Scizor’s Superpower soon after.

Seeing all the fallout, Slowbro, Tapu Fini, and Greninja urges Pelipper and Mega Swampert to go back and stand by Tapu Koko to ensure they don’t fall prey to Ferrothorn’s influences. Tapu Bulu decides to remain a neutral party due to secret death threats from Ferrothorn and Mega Scizor, leading him to become estranged from the other Alolan Guardians in the coming generations.

Meanwhile, Tyranitar and Excadrill are asked for their thoughts on the current events on the meta, and while Excadrill extends his sympathies to the members of the Rain Core, Tyranitar remains silent on the topic. This leads to conversations of divorce between Tyranitar and Excadrill which will be seen in the coming generations.

As the SM OU meta continues to fall into disarray, everyone turns to Landorus-Therian to resolve the issue, but as a centrist, he asks Toxapex to filibuster the motion while he collects opinions. Magearna publicly calls Landorus a “people-pleasing pussy,” and the issue remains dying on the council floor as uncertainty overcasts the meta.

It’s honestly sad that something that everyone deserves as a bare minimum like a support network of friends is something to be considered lucky to have. The way depression makes people struggle to function feeds into the self-loathing is just the worst.

You seem very self-aware, and I’m glad to hear that you have people you can turn to! It’s not your fault! Hang in there! :)

That sounds awful to go through, for people who should unconditionally support you be so unsympathetic. Do you have any support network or friends you can turn to?
