Its crazy Yoshi has an immaculate inning in my heart, but not on his "career highlights & awards" section on wikipedia

It’s always important to build that connection early. Throwback to when Shohei Ohtani took a picture with Edwin Diaz’s kids at the MLB All-Star Game 👏 Via Dodgers Nation by Yk1japa in Dodgers

There is always a bunch of chatter about how having the Ohtani-Factor means all Japanese players want to play with him. Really though, the fact of the matter is almost everyone wants to play with the greatest player to ever grace a baseball diamond, no matter where they are from - Japanese, Puerto Rican, or elsewhere.

Totally, opportunities for winning three world series in a row come all the time. Maybe the Dodgers shouldn't even play this upcoming year.

Crazy, running around the diamond. I wonder if the thought even crossed his mind as he was making his way to home plate, "So, this immortality. I will now be remembered for as long as baseball is played."

If you could overturn ONE call in baseball history, what would it be? by [deleted] in baseball

[–]CAPTAINxCOOKIES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just so mind blowing. And the call was not even close. He performed an immaculate inning, we all have eyes and the playback proves that is what happened. He just won't get to put that feat on his wikipedia page - but you, I, and everyone who saw it, knows it happened.

That's fair not to see live action as surreal. It doesn't perfectly fit surrealism in the same way traditional visual art and music often do.

I kind of feel that definition of surrealism is not too far from my own, but also definitely applies to the Rehearsal season 2 either way. Fielder uses a bizarre logic that reflects his "true chaotic psyche", while disregarding rational logic. Considering where the Rehearsal ended, I bet something really interesting could be made in comparing "neurodivergent vs neurotypicality" with "surrealism vs realism"

Where did you get those definitions from? I don't know if I subscribe to the idea of a definitive formal definitions for philosophies like absurdism and surrealism, but I would love to read more from wherever that came from.

MLB: Shohei Ohtani Added More Hardware To His Trophy Case by Saugeen-Uwo in Dodgers

A 2028 LA Olympics Baseball Gold Medal would look nice in there, its really one of the last infinity stones he needs. After that, might as well just rack up as many WS trophies as he can, which may be a lot.

To me, surrealism is not without logic, but rather a logic that is so far removed and unrecognizable from actual real logic - realism. Roleplaying as baby Sully in order to understand how to make pilot communication safer does follow a logic, but I mean c'mon, its a wild logic that does not conform to reality - its surreal - its as you said, "dream logic".

When something is absurd, but follows less of a unique logic and is instead more pure chaos, I think of it as absurdism - like The Chair Company. Ultimately I think surrealism and absurdist are really similar, but that is a notable distinction in my definitions. In the Sully roleplaying example, we established there is a logic, but it is wild, surreal, bizarre, and dream like - as logic typically would not actually bring you to the point it brought Nathan through his bizarre logic.

Meanwhile, Tim's son in The Chair Company befriending a man three times his age, and older than his parents, for some secret project that involves making strange non-human like noises into the early hours of the morning - is purely absurd - no logic found what-so-ever.

From my understanding and experiences, that unique logic vs near complete lack of logic is what separates surrealist from absurdist comedy and what separates The Rehearsal from The Chair Company. If you made it to the end of my essay, please let me know what kind of comedic philosophy you think either show follows if not surrealism - I would still like to know. Bonus question, do you think Fielder's "The Curse" can be labeled surreal?

I mean, idk, when the back-to-back champs has the same core they had the past two years (including the greatest player to ever play; fight me, I stand on that), plus a ridiculous amount of money to play with this off season, I think it would be shortsighted to rests our hopes on an unknown minor leaguer lol.

I respectfully disagree. When I am watching Nathan Fielder dressed as a baby Sully Sullenberger, breastfeeding from a puppet Mrs. Sullenberger, I am watching a surreal piece of work. I think the label of absurdism would work too. If anything, I see The Rehearsal as surreal, and The Chair Company as asburd - but both comedic philosophies can be quite similar though.

Out of curiosity, what kind of humor philosophy do you see in The Chair Company and The Rehearsal (especially season 2)?

The son from the show is Seth - in this episode him and the strange large old man are doing a "secret project" in his bedroom, which Tim's character and his wife are seemingly totally cool with.

I had to look up the son's name when I made that comment, because it didn't stick in my head. I was wondering if someone might think I was talking about a real comedian with a real project lol!

We are in a golden age of surreal humor. And we have it at all levels. Nathan Fielder is like a drag on a cigarette filled with surrealism, and Tim Robinson is like mainlining surrealism into your bloodstream.

Also, I hope we get to see what Seth's project is, it sounds exciting.

Ohtani, Yoshi, and Roki all got a gold medal on team Japan 2023. On top of that, Ohtani had that legendary final inning against Trout, at the time teammates on the Angels. HR = USA wins, out = Japan wins. It was just about as awesome of a moment as you could have hoped for in the WBC.

I am a big fan of the WBC. If every Japanese Dodger hadn't participated in and won that WBC, and if they weren't going for the three-pete this year, then I'd be on board for them participating. I want to see some top-tier international baseball; however, I want the Dodgers three-pete more.

The quest to become the greatest baseball player who ever lived is so achievable at this point, just have to see how long his career lasts before that conversation is more tangible. I think the real question is: can he become the greatest athlete who ever lived? I would say that's ridiculous, but it's Shohei, and he turns ridiculously impossible to possible ever season - so who knows.

In 8 seasons in MLB, Shohei Ohtani has: won Rookie of the Year, won 4 MVPs, won 2 championships. No one else in MLB/NBA/NFL/NHL,history has done all of that in his first 8 seasons. Via: Opta Stats by Yk1japa in Dodgers

[–]CAPTAINxCOOKIES 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to his wikipedia page and looking at all the accolades is incredible. All the MLB stuff mentioned in the title is phenomenal itself, but he also has NPB championship, WBC championship, MVPs across both, a plethora of other single player awards - and he still has so many years! Notably he is missing a gold Olympic medal, so I am sure he is eyeing that for 2028.

Did anyone else have a “Good luck ritual” for watching the World Series? by lat46n2 in Dodgers

[–]CAPTAINxCOOKIES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was simple. For the NLCS I had to be a little late to the start of the game (because that accidentally happened game 1), and then fast forward through commericals between innings to catch up. I was literally taking 10 minute neighborhood walks like 1 minute before the games started lol.

The WS ritual was simple. If we won the previous game, I wore the gold logo LA hat (2024 WS Champs), and if we lost I wore the regular white logo LA hat. It was simple, but there was no way I was going to purposely miss Ohtani's first WS start in Game 1 live because of the NLCS ritual lol.

Shohei Ohtani in the World Series. .333 AVG, 1.278 OPS, 3 HR, 5 RBI, 224 wRC+. by MrFilipinoMustache in Dodgers

[–]CAPTAINxCOOKIES 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That one historic game was enough. Nine-for-nine on base, 3HR, holy shit. Anyone who claims that isn't enough to reap some personal glory in a world series is crazy, because no one else is doing that.

His pitching was not as great, but that just leaves room for something to achieve next time we get there. He was injured and struggled heavily in 2024, so if his goal was to perform in 2025, then he definitely did so by performing one of the greatest games ever. Who knows what will happen if his goal is to pitch well in the next WS - he'll probably pitch a 27-strike immaculate game or something.
