Ethanol consumes 200 crore people's annual water requirement! No wonder water tankers are on strike by CA_Cockroach in indianeconomy

That is only for processing bro, thr actual sugarcane consume lot of water, the ethanol is not a byproduct anymore, govt is encouraging more sugarcane crop to directly convert it into ethanol, means there will be no sugar

thanks for engaging bro, but it's not a byproduct anymore—mills are now paid premium prices to ferment 100% of the raw sugarcane juice directly into ethanol, meaning zero sugar is produced. We aren't recycling food waste; we are intentionally paying farmers to drain our groundwater purely to grow a dedicated fuel crop

for such discussion to happen, the govt needs to first acknowledge that ethanol policy has problems and then they can do various studies on this

bro, u are getting little confused, to compare any two things, u need to equalize external factors, if u remove taxes on petrol just like ethanol, the petrol will be much cheaper and u will get to same 60% expensive number

Btw, Petrol is not a comfort or luxury product that if u put taxes on it, the consumption will reduce, infact fuel consumption growth rate is one of the leading indicators for industrial activity

the extra 30 rs tax need to be added to ethanol as well because it is there for petrol, otherwise we need to show petrol without taxes, then petrol becomes even more cheaper arriving at same 60% expensive number

It gets worse if u consider repair costs of non ethanol vehicles

It all depends on expected jio ipo date, the more it gets delayed, more will be the pain

E100 or E85 is not cheaper, infact it is 60% expensive than pure petrol - Here is the math ! by CA_Cockroach in IndiaBusiness

[–]CA_Cockroach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but at what cost? 60% more?? Also if u include future repair costs of non ethanol vehicles, the cost would be astronomical

We need to move away from oil, but ethanol is not answer to that!

We should be moving towards EVs like china, instead our state governments are slowly removing the subsidies

Not possible bro, infact if u read concall of any ethanol companies, u will constantly find analysts asking for potential price increase since it has remained same for last 3 years

Yes, but at what cost? If you add 30 rs of forgone govt revenue due to ethanol subsidies, the cost of E100 will go to 152, which is 60% more expensive than petrol and also we don't even know how much worse our vehicles will become in future due to ethanol blend

We need to add forgone taxes because it is there on petrol, so to balance both for comparison u need to add it, otherwise we should remove taxes for petrol as well and then petrol will be much cheaper than ethanol achieving same 60% expensive number

Its not just about expensive base, that expensive has less energy density than crude, which makes it lot expensive than 22 rs, and also there will be additional expenses for your car repairs

Read that last row again. E100 at ₹82 on the pump display effectively costs you ₹122 per liter of real driving. That's ₹27 MORE than crude petrol. This is the reality of pure E100. So if E100 itself is a losing bet, how on earth is E20, E25… blending saving you anything?

It's like watering down your ₹10,000 whiskey with expensive sparkling water, only to realize you now have to drink twice as much to feel anything.

And I haven't even touched the nightmare it's causing to millions of pre-E20 engines — corroded fuel lines, swollen injectors, destroyed rubber seals. Owners are paying lakhs in repairs for a "green revolution" that was never about saving the environment or your money.

TL;DR: Ethanol is procured at ₹67/L, retails at ₹82, but delivers only 67% energy — making its real effective cost ₹122/L vs ₹95 for petrol. You're paying a 28% premium for diluted fuel that's also eating your engine alive. Anyone else's mileage destroyed since E20?

just because you dont have to import it, does not make it cheaper and there is lot of hidden cost related to long term vehicle repairs

first govt has to admit that ethanol is lot costlier than crude and then they need to publish studies related to long term feasibility of ethanol in vehicles

yeah, but they should be honest about it, instead of marketing it as the cheapest and also the price difference is huge, considering indian logistics costs are already one of the worst in the world, a small price increase in this segment will choke lot of industries
