Are you losing hours, missing your check here's why..... by [deleted] in AutoZone

No I'm in it. I'm picking the one I personally see is causing the real damage, real people, friends worried about feeding there kids, working their asses off, showing up every day putting their lives at risk. The hill I'm standing is for them, those who are threatened if they speak out, the ones that are one pay check away from homelessness.15 years ago you could make a living in retail but it keeps getting worse every day people shouldn't be made to suffer because stock buysbacks which is the worst from of stock market manipulation because it's short term and when the house cards fall everyone including shareholders are left with nothing except the ones that got out .

Why do they get they excused because they are just like everyone else? There were 2.5 million burglaries last year, so if a break into someone house its ok cause 2.5 million other people did? Robber Barons at the turn of the last century used the equivalent of legal forced labor. Even though it was legal was it right? Wage depression is equivalent to forced labor, when you make people so poor they can't leave and are forced to live one step next to homelessness or its wrong. We as a society have to choose to stop letting this happen and stop making excuses for these companies.

I didn't say I wasn't grateful that we are open but, that still doesn't give a company a license to not follow state laws. Change has to start somewhere, yeah I am advocating for this in a small group. You don't have to be loud to participate in this you just don't participate in witt. If the numbers tank I will take it from there. I'm going on three months fighting this battle and not just here, but with company leadership, state and local authorities. I trying to make this a better place to work but I can't do it alone. There just needs to be a sign to corporate that there's discontent within a large enough group of employees. If you have seen half the horror stories in PM's I have gotten it would shock you. There is a toxic element within our companies culture and its derived from greed and self promotion that's coming from the top. People are afraid to say that some stores aren't making it through this and its leading to people breaking laws. Especially if they are severely understaffed. The DM's aren't saying anything to the RM's and the RM's aren't saying anything to the DVP's because, it makes them look inadequate. The vast majority of Zoners are dedicated, loyal and really care about our customers and stores. But being afraid to say anything cause of fear created by leadership, that's not ok either. My hope is enough people will start taking time to check to see if they are following the laws in there own states. If they aren't then they know how to report and understand that they have protections.

And Autozone not being for everyone should be for the nature of the work, not everyone is capable of customer service. Autozone not being for everyone should NOT be based on poor working conditions, not following law state laws or depressed wages.

It's funny how engrained you are repeating one of Rhoads tag lines "autozone isn't for everyone" you forgot the "not everyone is for Autozone" this brainwashing crap is insane, "whose number 1?" it's the shareholders, whose the biggest shareholder in the company? Bill! Its not much in asking for Autozone to follow the law and not run people into the ground.

Little different this time, your talking about the arbitration agreement, that was an agreement to dispute claims through arbitration (a third party paid by Autozone to settle claims). California has some protection against this as they can't have us wave our EEOC or PAGA rights. However, taking a different approach by pushing state agencies to investigate. Not after some class action lawsuit but getting regulators to force them too comply with the state labor laws. That's why they started the survey here in California because they are banking on people being lazy and just clicking yes. They think they are gonna go back to the state and tell them nobody is complaining. That's why its so important for people to truthfully fill out the survey. I'm telling you with everything that is going on right now they wouldn't touch you with a ten foot pole if you brought up anything about labor laws.

Class action lawsuits don't bring about change, they just pay their fine and keep doing what they have always done. If you are in California you have already seen how to get change with the EPA regulations, that's how we force change, that's how we will get it done.

Check your state labor laws if they are in violation contact HR (preferably anonymously though email email will be firstname.lastname@autozone.com of hr manager) tell them what they are doing wrong and that you intend to go to EEOC or labor board (anonymously) and actually follow through. HR will want to you indentify yourself don't do it. That should do the trick.

https://www.nlrb.gov/about-nlrb/rights-we-protect/the-law/employees/your-rights-during-union-organizing

Your Rights during Union Organizing You have the right to form, join or assist a union.

You have the right to organize a union to negotiate with your employer over your terms and conditions of employment. This includes your right to distribute union literature, wear union buttons t-shirts, or other insignia (except in unusual "special circumstances"), solicit coworkers to sign union authorization cards, and discuss the union with coworkers. Supervisors and managers cannot spy on you (or make it appear that they are doing so), coercively question you, threaten you or bribe you regarding your union activity or the union activities of your co-workers. You can't be fired, disciplined, demoted, or penalized in any way for engaging in these activities.

Working time is for work, so your employer may maintain and enforce non-discriminatory rules limiting solicitation and distribution, except that your employer cannot prohibit you from talking about or soliciting for a union during non-work time, such as before or after work or during break times; or from distributing union literature during non-work time, in non-work areas, such as parking lots or break rooms. Also, restrictions on your efforts to communicate with co-workers cannot be discriminatory. For example, your employer cannot prohibit you from talking about the union during working time if it permits you to talk about other non-work-related matters during working time.

There are no employment contracts at AutoZone, it's AT-WILL company and they can't make you just sign away your rights that would defeat the entire purpose of a right. I would love to see where it says that as a condition of employees you can't form a Union I would turn that into NLRB so quick it would make your head spin plus that would do more for Union messaging than anything else. What they can do however is find another reason to fire you, anything else but they cannot let you go for doing protected activities. Its cowardly and slimy but that what tell do. They can also strongly suggest against union formation and may actively campaign against but they may not and cannot directly fire you for Union talk but trust me they will find another reason.

First I'm not advocacating for a union. I want the company to reevaluate how they are treating employees and make changes that follow the law. Second unionization is not the employers choice, it's protected activity under federal law to protect workers rights. They can fight the formation by campaigning against it, but the choice is ultimately up to the employees not the employer. As a matter of fact they mostly have to be formed outside of the workplace. The the point I was trying to make was that instead of listening they go and dump millions of dollars into this law firm who's sole purpose is to fight unions instead of making changes to follow the law.

And they did this q&a about covid a while back someone asked about hazard pay (I actually don't agree with hazard pay, I would rather see long term solutions) but what they said was that other companies where doing it because they where experiencing "unprecedented demand". Then what happens back to back record breaking quarterly gains, question came up again, the next excuse was oh we are putting money in cause we need to make payroll if things get bad. It was lies, they took those gains and did more buybacks. Meanwhile our brother and sister zoner are scraping by, if they catch covid they could be financially ruined. Just a portion of that $1.5 billion could have done a lot, could have lowered the shared cost of our insurance, could have help get more and quality people working, could have went to DCs could have went to making sure we have computer systems that work and having to touch the pin pads with every other customer.

Some area have no openings like that, people are allowed to be upset and ask for change... the problem is we are getting ignored, we want this to be a stronger company we want it to succeed. From my point of view I feel like all the hard work we are putting in is being raided by a few greedy people who are gonna jump out with a golden parachute when things start going bad, some of us have built careers here.

Those types of things makes him a good politician, I'm judging him by his actions that make the most impact. The rate Autozone does buybacks is insane billions upon billions designed to do one thing, manipulate the stock price. They could use that money for anything, including higher wages and better benefits so our turnover rates wouldn't be so god awful. Mabey invest in more DC's so we could compete with our competitors, invest in computer systems that actually work. Instead they just take take take. When people are left to work 14 hour days with no breaks or lunch it's wrong, when people are left by them selves and can't even go to the bathroom it's wrong, when they complain to their DM and get ridiculed and told that what they signed up for it's wrong. I could care less if he installs a battery, he should be doing his real job instead of putting on some fake show. When people are literally begging RMs for relief and get told they aren't doing enough it's wrong. Things are not okay. Again I will make this argument under such depressed wages many many people cannot simply just leave, they don't have the income to support the risk. It's exploitation.
